AOL PLUS PING

I have aol plus sbc dsl and my ping on online games can not go below 100ms. My friend who lives 5 blocks away has sbc yahoo dsl and he can get pings of 50ms or less. Should I switch to sbc yahoo dsl?

It will likely improve your pings if you do. I'm in the same boat as you. I may start the switch at the beginning of the year. Right now being able to telecommute over the holiday season is one reason to stay where I am. No way do I want to do that over dial-up for even one day. I had enough with that when I was in Delaware a few weeks ago.

My pings are also about 100-120ms, AOL Plus DSL via SBC PacBell.

As Aggie Dan stated, to lower your pings, you'll probably need to go with another DSL provider.

It's their crappy bloated software, always get dsl from the provider, ie earthlinks provider is covad so they charge more than covad and give you bloated software that makes your machine run slower and get worse pings, but to make up for it they charge $10 more for the same service

Pings are not affected by anything on your computer - it's a routing/loading issue pure and simple. Now, back to the topic at hand...

OK, not their software but do a traceroute from an AOL DSL machine and compare it to any other provider, the hop times are ridiculous, so its their routers sorry

yea so note that aol's servers are back east. so if you are far east, likewise you should have good pings.

I also have AOL Plus....i hate it. I am in the midst of switching to SBC and having so many problems. I talked to an SBC representative and he said that my line is still active. I already cut my account with aol .....i can't switch until this BS is cleared up. Plus, I thought that AOL DSL here in Cali runs off of SBC Pac Bell lines? Any adivice out there to help speed this process up??? Any numbers to call?

I think I heard somewhere that if you told them you were moving they would release the line faster? not 100% sure though

I live in souther California, and I used some geographical routing software that confirms that I am routing through some place in VA. So, Just to ping around 110, i need to find a Server in like the Washington D.C. or virginia area. Can anything be done? Why can't they rout me through somehwere even remotely close? They have PLENTY of west coast customers, and small headquarters in Tucson. Why couldnt they just have a router there. Ah! Is AOL Cable any better for anyone on the west coast?

Theres really nothing you can do about the pings being in the hundreds with AOL DSL..it is becouse your on the west coast.
I am on the east coast and AOL DSL gives us very good pings here..have never gone over 30 and usually in the low 20s.

Well...My ping is usually below 80 ms and most of the time is in the 60's.I just wish AOL would get with the program and get rid of the Dynamic IP crap.No Xbox live and PS2 online for many of us.

if u live on the west coast and want better pings but don't want to drop AOL, try to get aboard the Covad test. Go to keyword DSLTEST to apply.

Look at this thread for one reason AOL pings suck:

»[Info] AOL cuts off Cogent

A lot of game servers are on Cogent and AOL's cutting off of Cogent's peering means that AOL customers are not getting the product that they're paying for (ie. swift packets from the sites they want to use).
