The PS2 is working, so I can't say for sure about the other consoles.

Hey we just started. Tomorrow will be another day. Hopefully someone here will attempt on other consoles.

pjgem, I am not sure what is wrong on your end (if it is) since the person I attempted the setup on lives in Rockville. So far, he doesn't have a problem (...or yet? , hey it's a new toy ).

Again, thanks providing a new toy joemontana.

If I do this with a Lynksys Router will I have to have my PC powered on in order to use AOL on my other PC's?(Is this set up like a network or not?)Or if I try to log online using this setup on another PC will it still be able to go online without my 1st PC(with Wingate)powered on?

yeah the pc contains that special hunk of magic code that is copyright AOL that talks to its network .. so something has to be on and running it.. and the only thing that has that code is the PC.

well, this is one good incentive to having aol. at least this is another good reason to keep aol.

try using a dlink 704-p router.

i am using that to connect muliptal computers. the router doesn't have aol broadband option in it, but it will work. one catch is that for win 98, if you don't have the aol software installed, then you need to have the cable modem connected directly to the computer, to pick up the modem, and then hook it up to the router and to a winipcfg and release renew.

Hi, everyone!

Sorry I haven't posted more info for you guys concerning this PS2/AOL/Wingate thingy, but I have been trying to get this setup to work with just two NIC's and I have been trying to get my damn cousin to let me borrow his XBOX so I can see if it works on that console.

Well here's some some good news and some bad news for the New Year...

Good News:
The TWO NIC setup WORKS... I tried and it worked! I hope to have a lil' manual for you guys by tomorrow night to show you how to set it up.
Next, my cousin(jerk w/ XBOX)has been a Network Administrator for the last 15 years and he said my setup should work with ANY console that supports DHCP and DNS! He said I could get a toaster oven online if it supported DHCP and DNS. So, thats good news for those with the XBOX and the Gamecube. Hopefully, one of you will do us all a favor and give it a try!

Bad News:
It doesn't look like AOL is going to help us find an easier way to connect to our gaming consoles any time soon. I spoke to a knowledgeable AOL customer rep.(SHOCKING!) and she told me that AOL will not come out with some sort of fix until June, beta people will be the first to try it out, and there will definitely be a surcharge. I think AOL and all these other ISP's better remember what an INTERNET SERVICE provider is supposed to do.... PROVIDE INTERNET SERVICE!!! And not charge more, for something you are all ready paying for!

Whew...just had to let that out.

Anyways...
HAPPY NEW YEAR and HAPPY GAMING!

Sincerely,
#16 Cool Joe

Hey guys. Hope u don't mind but i posted a link to here on ign's phantasy star online gaming board. I have tried this method with a gamecube (well... I just used a crossover cable instead of router, but wingate does work) and it does work. I am forever in all your debt. I can now play PSO w/o a hitch. I'm so happy I don't need to change ISPs... not like my dad would anyway. He likes AOL.

Do you think if I have a Router just spliting the AOL connection, and I run crossover cable from one of my PC's to my PS2 and I run Wingate on that PC will it work?

What do you mean? I expect he figured it would work and tried it out. When I wrote a FAQ for SOCOM online I suggested AOL would work with windows ICS. As it turned out, windows ICS will not work with AOL, however the principle was sound, PC net share software should work, and thats that.

The "credibility" is that it works for the people who have tried it. Whats the problem?

Do you think if I have a Router just spliting the AOL connection, and I run crossover cable from one of my PC's to my PS2 and I run Wingate on that PC will it work?

Whoa... got a huge hangover fellas so if this post doesnt make much sense...I apologize in advance.

To make this short and sweet, according to Wingate Help Files this setup will work with a USB Connection from your DSL modem to your computer.

In the next few days I will re-release detailed walkthroughs on how to setup up this AOL/PS2/Wingate process with the following hardware configurations:

1. USB modem with one Network Interface Card and a crossover cable(NIC)
2. Ethernet modem, TWO Network Interface Cards, and a crossover cable (NIC)

This is very time consuming and proper wording is a must in this situation. So, please be patient because we will all see the online gaming promise land very soon.

P.S. I have no way of getting my hands on a XBOX, so I need one of you out there to verify for us if this setup up will work with the XBOX... I am 99.9% sure it will work with the XBOX...so someone try to get back to me as soon as you can on this situation. I really think it will work! THANKS!
Once again HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Your bud,
3-time Super Bowl MVP

You can use a USB ethernet adaptor to the PS2 (instead of the sony one), and a usb dsl modem attached to the PC should still work in the original picture, but then you still need at least one ethernet port on the PC and a router .. or direct connect ps2 to the at-least-one pc ethernet port, with a crossover cable, skipping the router. then setup software as above.

should i not use the sony network adaptor that i already have...and i dont really need a hub... just connect the ps2 via ethernet cable to the nic that i have on the back of my computer???
