Gibson - Brady saga and the new web page

I guess by now you are all familiar with our Original Thread opened by 2kmaro about the whole issue between Steve Gibson and Ben Brady. As you all know both Mr. Gibson and Mr. Brady were kind enough to join the thread and clarify their positions regarding the whole issue.

During the previous thread Steve Gibson mentioned that he would explain things further on his web site. Well. he kept the promise. During last night and the early hours of today Steve and I exchanged a few email messages and he mentioned that the new promised page is ready. He has a few references to DSLR and the thread in the security forum and he has also announced his strong endorsement of ZLA. He seemed very enthusiastic about Matt's product and expertise and the future of ZLA.

He also mentioned on his new Web page that :
quote:
The second bit of silver lining, as disclosed within the DSL Reports thread, is that this discussion has stimulated the programmers and software developers over at DSL Reports to immediately begin working toward the provision of a similarly useful, comprehensive, and responsible utility (they believe it may be freeware!) for the BlackICE Defender intrusion detection system.
No pressure 2K.

During our emails Steve expressed his wishes that I open a thread and let all of you know about this page and he invited you all to pay a visit to His New Page So feel free to visit the page and come back and let your opinions known.
Cheers.

Well worth the time to read.
He had a few good things to say about this site.
More than a few good comments on WCB
plenty to say about zone log analyzer

best of all, give Ben Brady the black eye he deserves

I think Mr. Gibson's posted comments in the original thread and now on his site demonstrate to me that he is an intelligent and sincere person who was frustrated by the havoc Mr. Brady's program was causing him. I believe the style of his response to this problem makes him look very professional.

I am happy to see that DSLR is given such a prominent and prestigious position in this issue. However, I am now concerned that all the millions of GRC users will be crowding over to DSLR now!! Aren't we busy enough??

And now who is going to get a big head out of all this publicity -- WCB?? ;)

Thanks, WCB and 2K for all of your work in making this event happen! Cheers. R2.

Thanks 2k and WCB for bringing this all together. Without 2k's first post, and WCB's involvement... well, who knows what could have continued between Ben and Steve?

But now both are informed and it seems like both are willing to improve their corner of the world. And now we are all well informed because of it.

Great web page too!

I was glad to see that Steve was adding a warning to his site about the appearance of entries in the user's logs. While this instance was obviously the fault of some lame Clear software I think the attempt to further educate the general user community about the nature of the entries in their logs is important and necessary.

2Kamaro and WildCatBoy are both an extremely valuable asset to the security world and to the forums at DSL Reports.

This instance only re-enforces my thoughts.

It also reminds me of a lesson that I had already learned but sometimes forget. That is making a decision or assumption with out knowing all of the facts.
Everyone makes mistakes, it is only human. Oftentimes mistakes are very difficult to discover, acknowledge, admit, attempt to correct, learn from, and/or not use against someone.

We also tend to forget that things seem to happen for a reason. Sometimes, we don't see the bad that can happen from something we feel is good, and other times, the good that comes from something we originally see as bad.

Many positive things are happening and have a potential to happen from this disagreement. Hopefully we will all benefit from it...

Does anyone else but me wonder HOW in the world a $20,000, multiple-hour project could be accomplished in one night?

I think Mr. Brady's attitude and approach to this whole situation has been disingenuous and less-than-professional. He has made implications and statements that were uncalled for. Additionally, he was the individual who escalated this private issue to a public forum.

He certainly has NOT gone out of his way to afford the users of this site any great degree of respect! He could have used this opportunity to attract potential users to his product. In my opinion, he was done the opposite. Certainly not the way to "win friends and influence people."

R2, you have an excellent point. From a customer satisfaction view, Steve has gone above and beyond from the outset. I cannot say that for Ben.

R2 - I guess he must have been working behind the scenes for over two weeks now;);) - I just received this email to all ClearZone/ICE/Guard users from Brady. It would indeed seem that either he over-estimated the time needed to modify his program, or he has implemented just a little warning message of some type (haven't downloaded it or tried it out yet). Bold Emphasis added by me:

-------
There is a new update available for all ClearZone Report Utility users.
Version 4.4 now includes a 'user education' message as requested by Steve Gibson.
Be sure to read the ONLINE HELP file for a very important message that pertains to the modifications made to the program.

It can be downloaded from the following URLs

»clearzone.hypermart.net/clearzoneinstall.exe
»www.firewallreporting.bizland.co···tall.exe
»www.firewallreporting.com/clearz···tall.exe

Hmm... I read Steve's statement...

While generally accurate, the tone is less than neutral. His statement is a step or two above Ben in professionalism... I still find it falls well short of a true professional.

I still see it as too personal and perhaps a touch of self-promotion... but I guess that's the nature of the beast.

Re: Gibson - Brady saga and the new web page

Wildcatboy,

Thanks to you for starting this thread! I've been a lurker here as DSLR for a few months and I've been a regular at GRC for over a year.

Sunday, when I noticed the spillover from the c.s.f discussion to DSLR via 2k's message, I immediately fired off an email to give Steve a heads up.

The rest, as they say, is now history.

I've known Steve since the early days of SpinRite and his contributions to the security/privacy fields are numerous, specially in educating those new to firewalls and related security measures, with many more goodies on the way for the future.

When I see his motives or ethics questioned or falsely maligned, it really aggravates me.

Judging from the discussions at GRC the past couple of days, I think you will be seeing some new faces around here and any of the folks from DSLR are certainly welcome to drop by and say Hi! at GRC.

Ray

Well Ray, thank you for alerting Steve to the thread 2k posted. It has been a pleasure reading from Steve and Ben both, a pleasure in learning who these men are and how they handle themselves under fire.

And a big thumbs up for you. You came out of hiding, and for that, I am sure we all will benefit. You also did everyone a favor by sending Steve a heads up on 2k's message, and just how many people outside this site and over all will benefit because of the exchange of information is uncountable. Needless to say, it will be many, and due to this whole affair, the issues of security and what it takes to maintain it will be even more of an educational process on »www.grc,com than it has been in the past. Being a lurker on that site myself and having read the newsgroup postings for about 6 to 9 months now, I have learned a lot there, but I still prefer DSLR and am happy to see you are a part of our family.

Side note...Maybe some of the ISP's, who up to this point tend to ignore messages from users of firewalls. will also begin to respond more positively. The outcome of what has occurred over the past few days can only be a benefit to them as well. I can dream, can't I!

Firstly, thankyou for the opportunity to lurk and read the Gibson Brady thread.
Certainly the most educating I have read for a while. Top marks to WCB and 2k.with the same for Steve Gibson for not only coming on, but joining. (Boy, your IM icon is going to be flashing!!!)
It is pleasing to see that after all that the simple placement of a User Education Message was attached to the programs. Time will tell if the message works.
Once again, Thanks. Great thread and a result as well.

First: I do not use ClearZone or ZLA, so I feel a little less biased on this. With that said.

After reading both threads, I have to say I am disappointed in Brady of ClearZone, Steve of ShieldsUP (GRC), the Mentally challenged users of CZ & ShieldsUps firing off false Alarm E-Mails, and now the less than objective comment of CZ being Mickey-Mouse.

Leaves a bad taste....

He said She said,

Having just finished reading the original thread mentioned above by WCB...(one of DSLreports "many resident Gurus") ...for the uptenth time....I have to say...IMHO....the Professionalism, maturity, open mindness, clean....etc.... showed by ALL party's to the discussion....(in no particular order)...Mr. Gibson, Mr. Brady....and without having to type all the names....ALL the fine folks that visited the Security Forum and responded to what I feel is a very important topic....proves once again this site is NOT for everybody. If ANYONE can share with me a link, via e-mail, IM, or thru a post, to a Forum on this Whole Dang Internet that can proudly stick their chests out, hold there heads up high, honestly invite Anyone, no matter what age, sex, creed or color and be able to not only know What are the rules on posting? but Prove this pretty much each and every day I have been a Proud member of DSLreports....please share that link with me and some of the others. I'll believe it when i see it. As is stated in our Forum rules and proven just in the above mentioned thread..."99.999% of our users do not run afoul of any of the "hard rules"."

Having said the above, I am still proudly where I was before this thread....Between a Rock(front door...Zone Alarm Pro...back door) and a Hard Place thanks to all the wonderful people that visit DSLreports Security Forum and offer there opinions and facts. To sum this up from my perspective, the three party's to all of this mentioned above...has...IMO...boiled down to this.

Concerning Mr. Gibson and Mr. Brady...."Both parties have a legitimate argument in the issue."

We as users, hopefully, will continue to learn more, because in the end......"It is still up to the END USER to make the final determination"

Thanks for letting me share my opinion,

Be Secure AND Paranoid

OZ

BTW....2K....Please give us a week or two before sharing anymore e-mail with us

Ok, I'll keep all these little goodies to myself in the future. But I really like the results of all of this - the most recent oddity of it is that at the end of page 8, now Brady has taken a one-liner shot at Gibson --- does this mean I'm going to have to step in and read the riot act on PERSONAL ATTACKS to these kids? Maybe I'll leave that one to WCB - after all, it is his forum!:)

I'm sure WCB has plenty of time on his hands to write a "Jerry Springer" final thought...and put that puppy to bed
