| Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 Has anyone here used the Scientific Atlanta Explorer Digital Set-Top Box / PVR? Time Warner is offering one locally for an extra $5/month, so I'm going to trade in my current box for one of these. They're supposed to have two tuners, two MPEG encoders, and an 80 GB hard drive. Recording time is 50 hours. Plus, since is uses the same programming guide as my digital cable, there's no need for a phone line.

This evening I got a disc error when I went to my recorded list and 2 weeks of programming was erased. The first box I had would stop recording shows in the middle, or would refuse to record them entirely. It appears that Time Warner is using us a beta testers, yet making us pay monthly for the service. I am canceling the service tomorrow and going back to the old reliable VCR...

| Does anyone know if you can hook this thing into your PC (I notice it has a USB and ethernet port) so you can directly transfer the stuff it records to it's Hard drive to your computer?
Like lets say I record a show on the 8000 DVR unit and I just want to copy that video (assuming it just saves what you record as MPEGS) to my PC? If it supports that I'd be really happy!

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 I've got this box... and it's crashed twice already just this morning. I've only had it for 3 days, but so far I am very unimpressed. Extremely slow, switching between different channel types (plain cable channels 1-60 and digital channels) often causes the system to lock up for a long period of time. And VERY often certain channels just won't lock in for a VERY long time. Sometimes 5 minutes or more.
The PVR functionality is nice (when it works. I've had it spontaniously "forget" to record something already), but this model is pure crap. I hope they are going to replace them with something else.

It is prone to crash for no good reason (3 time so far) The interface is very nice and if it was faster and more reliable I would have to give it two thumbs up. But since it keeps crashing and it sometimes won't come back up for 10 or 15 minutes this thing is going back to COX.

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 When we first deployed the units last year around September, we first noticed the delay in changing channels. SA knew about this problem and was testing a firmware update to address the problem. We pushed that firmware out in January and it helped, but only a little. Then we became aware of another problem where all of the scheduled recordings were disappearing from the menus. SA rushed out an emergency firmware update due to a leap year bug.
Overall, the 8000 series is a pretty good unit, but not the best. The fact that it is a dual tuner unit for the cost is pretty good considering that DISH offers their dual tuner unit for about $500 - $700. DISH offers the single tuner unit free with select packages and contracts. IMHO, the DISH units are better than the SA 8000 units, but then again, the fact that digital typically works on a 2way cable system is a plus (whereas sat still requires a phone line connection to push the PPV buys, etc. back to DISH or DirectTV).
SA did with the 8000 what they typically do with their units; they put non-functioning ports for "future" expansion. Also be aware that the 50 hour recording time is if you record nothing but digital programming. We discovered that since we have an analog tier (channels 2-99) that our customers get with all digital packages, when recording analog channels, it requires twice the capacity on the DVR, effectively reducing the recording time to 25 hours sometimes.
Most of our customers are happy with the DVR once we finally were able to get over the training hump and make them realize the advantages.
Our next step is to start rolling out the HD versions of the 8000 units as we have more and more customers that get our HD programming, but also want the ability to record it.
Anyway, just thought I'd post our experiences in regards to the 8000 units. We are a small municipal system and sometimes we can deploy the newer technologies faster than the big MSOs because we don't have to test it to death to satisfy internal policies. -- (Work):Telecommunications Superintendent, Municipal Broadband Cable System; (Home) 3 Windows XP PRO workstations, Windows XP PRO Laptop w/ wireless nic, Windows Home Laptop w/ wireless, RedHat 9.0 Server, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, Wireless PDA

What I WANT to do is take all the stuff I record to the SA8000 and transfer it to my PC so I can then burn DVDs. Right now I have to do it analog by video capturing each video to my vidcap card. Would save a lot of time if I could just take the video from its hard drive and "shoot" it over to my PC... sigh... oh well. Life is never easy.

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 I currently have a TiVo but was looking to try the Scientific Atlanta DVR for the two tuners and the ability to record two channels at once.
For those who have this DVR, can you watch a program from the beginning while the recorder is still recording the end of the program? Also, the TiVo has what they call a season pass which allows you to select a show and have the TiVo record all future episodes. Can the 8000 do that as well.
Thanks, Jeff | |

@bellsouth.net
| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 You indeed can watch the beginning of the show while it's recording the end. A good thing to do is to start recording, or to automatically have it start recording at the beginning of the show, and tune in 8 minutes late for a 30 minute program and 16 minutes late for a 60 minute program. That way you can fast forward through all the commercials.
This hardware isn't polished. It is slow, and quirky. But for the most part, it's done what it's advertised. There are just a few caveats: If you schedule two shows to be recorded at the same time, you need to be on one of those two channels when the second starts recording. It'll automatically record one scheduled show in the background if you are on another channel, but if you are already recording one, and you are viewing another, and you want to record yet another, you would need 3 tuners. Unfortunately, I have found that it doesn't zoom you over to one of the two channels scheduled for recording.
Season pass: poorly implemented. You can only schedule all episodes that can presently be seen by the guide. So, 7 days ahead. Don't expect to be able to go on a 3 week vacation and have it record all your shows.
Timing: The clock is set by the network, but I find that not all TV networks are synced. When you record, you should probably manually give it 2 minutes of buffer before, and possibly a minute of buffer before. After isn't so important, because most shows have credits, or break for commercials, and then come back with the credits. But a lot of shows start right at 00:00, so if your recorder turns on at 00:30, you've missed 30 seconds that won't be recorded. The dual tuner is nice for this. Tuesday nights on Fox at 9pm is 24... at 10pm is The Shield on FX, and at 11pm (on my local Fox affiliate) is The Simpsons. I like to record all of them, so I record from 8:59 to 10:01 on Fox, 9:59 to 11:01 on FX, and 10:59 to 11:31 on Fox. There are overlaps, but show 1 is recorded by tuner 1, show 2 by tuner 2, and show 3 by tuner 1. As long as you don't have a triple overlap, you should be fine.j

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 Thanks for the info. I have finally gotten a unit myself. Hopefully some of the convenience issues can be addressed with firmware upgrades. The dual tunners is great. I love the flexibility. The way programs that have been recored are listed is also very good. I like the interface.
Video quality on fast motion is not as good as the TiVo though. Also, the TiVo will back up a bit automatically after a fast forward. This is nice since you almost always fast forward partially into the program.
While the unit is recording, how do you automatically view the beginning without having to rewind manually?

| To get to the beginning of the video being recorded without rewinding go to the list of records. Then select the show (with a red mark next to it indicating it's still recording) and hit 'Play' button.
Another trick to resume a show from the middle without rewinding. If you watched some record for a while and want to finish viewing it later, don't stop it using 'Stop' button. Instead switch to a different channel. Then if you go to the list of recordings and select this show again, you will have an option to 'Resume playback' from the moment you switched to diff. channel.
About the video quality. I don't care much about fast motion, but the recording quality could be better. I would like a 'quality' option added to the recording settings. Something like 'Standard', 'LP' or 'SLP'.

You and I are neighbors. I live in neighboring Concord, NC and am very curious about the TW PVR. I've already got digital cable and am pretty happy with it.
How long have you had your PVR? Has it crashed any? I know channel tuning is a little bit slower than the Explorer 2100 boxes (what I have now.)
I'm curious to hear from someone who lives near me and is on the same cable system and I presume would have the same equipment.

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 I've had it for a half a month. Have not crashed on me yet. Sometimes it freezes for a second or two when switching from recording to live TV. But I don't mind it.
Channel tuning is even slower than my old digital box. One reason is that it always records current channel to support rewind/repeat (I am a little worried about constantly working hard drive J). So every time the channel is changed it has to remove old file and start a new one. But I don't usually surf channels, instead I surf IPG, which is fast enough.
Haven't had any problems with recording yet, i.e. all my programs (including first run episodes) were successfully recorded.
Overall it's worth trying. It takes five minutes to exchange the old cable box to a DVR in TW office.

| I've got my Explorer from Time Warner Carolina. Looks like they have newer software.
In Series Recording (their 'Season Pass', press 'List' then 'C' on remote to get there) you have multiple recording options: - record 'New Episodes' or 'All episodes' - record show on 'All channels' or a specific one - record 'All times' or a specific one - record on particular day of week, weekends or workdays
"Don't expect to be able to go on a 3 week vacation and have it record all your shows."
This is not true. It will record all shows from now on until you cancel series recording. It'll display the episodes to be recorded in 'Scheduled recordings' only for the next several days. But every time the IPG data is updated, next episodes are added to the schedule automatically.

| I have this box in my home now and have to say that it is a very impressive machine. Some things to note that differentiate from the competition:
1. Dual Tuner Rocks - Picture in Picture even without a PIP TV. Very simple to use
2. Cable in Interactive Program Guide: No more phone line being run to the box to get the program guide to work
3. 32 Times Fast Forward = 2 minutes of commercials gone in 5 seconds...
USB Port is only for keyboard or input device if the box is also used as an Internet portal... it may be used also if companies go with an Interactive Cable solution
The back of the box has Firewire ports... currently disabled but is flash upgradeable and this should create an opportunity to do video downloads to PC or an external hard drive.
I prefer this to TIVO... and I think the last writer doesnt understand the Interactive Program Guide because I have the option to search any programming in a variety ways... go into the "Guide" and then choose your "browse by" options. I actually think this is more versatile if you know what you are looking for...

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 GOOD NEWS for those seeking to increase HD size. I just had to have my 8000 swapped out due to stuttering replay of digital recordings. This new unit, which was fresh out of the box and not recycled, has a 160 gig HD. Result is about 70 hours of recording!!!! Thus far I have about 50 hours on it with no warnings of capacity limits. NIIICCE. AFA PC connections, still trying to figure this one out. It should be noted that most of the problems I have seen mentioned in this thread are NOT related to the boxes themselves, but to the cable headend. I have had 8000's in two different regions. In Maine, the system worked PERFECTLY. Never a hiccup, never a crash, never a freeze. Here in the Tampa area, I am on my 3rd box in 5 months, and it seems that they finally got it right. The USB ports are a no go. They are for a future capability for the unit to serve as a high speed internet unit (WebTV on steroids) though most cable companies are balking at this, opting for the full leaded high speed PC modems. Currently, the front USB port is enabled for manual "tweaking" by field techs for Sci Atl. Requires a passcode, but can be done with any USB PC keyboard. Hacking is being SERIOUSLY resisted through software (encryption of the data). Unlike TiVo, we don't own the boxes, so they don't want users messing with it. TiVo requires the box to be purchased, and THEN you pay a subscription for the thing to sing and dance, so they could care less what you do with it once you have bought it. All in all I love the 8000, especially since it takes one phone call to repair/replace a deffective unit, and doesn't cost anything. In short, if it breaks, it aint my problem. Hope this helps ya'll. | |

| Re: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 It is your problem if you had anything on the hard drive you wanted to watch or keep when the box dies! I just had 2 out of my 3 SA8000 boxes crap out totally today. The first lost the ability to connect to the head end and could not be turned on. The second had a hard drive failure. Time Warner just picked up both boxes, as they couldn't get them to work either. I lost over 80 hours of carefully selected programming from the last 6 months! That is now 5 out of 6 SA8000 boxes that have failed in just the last 9 months, each time taking all my recorded programming with it. At least with my 3 TiVo's, except for an initially bad hard drive out of the box, I have never had a unit fail. Quality control and you get what you pay for. The Guide data from Time Warner pales by comparison with TiVo's Guide data. Viva TiVo! Hasta La Vista SA8000! | |

PS those of you who might want a free 80 gig hardisk this can only be done if you have an old hardisk to put in it's place you simply take the box apart take the disk out and replace it with an old one then call time warner and tell them the error you are getting when trying to access your dvr

| Capturing video straight from the COAX or RCA outputs requires that you have a PC with a capture card. But being able to capture video with your PC kinda defeats the point of having a DVR altogether doesn't it? I mean, why wouldn't you just use the PC to capture the TV shows in the first place?
Besides, if you want to capture from the DVR at full NTSC resolution you have to get an expensive capture card and install it into a fairly high-end PC. Otherwise you'll spend weeks, if not months, trying to tweak settings so that your captures don't drop frames. Either that, or you settle for low res captures that are nothing close the the quality of the original capture on the DVR.
Not to mention most affordable capture cards only capture in AVI format which means you have to re-encode the video into an MPEG format so you can burn it to disc and watch it in a set top DVD player.
The solution isn't to recapture the video from the DVR. The DVR does an excellent job of capturing video as is.
The video is already sitting on the DVR's hard drive in MPEG format. It may be encrypted, but it's there and all we need is a way to access it.
All I can say is I hope a disgruntled SA employee sees this thread.
