I'm on my second DVR within one year. Hard disk crashed, but TW replaced it for free. Do you actually own the box? |

| It is my understanding that the cable companies retain ownership of the boxes. Adelphia here in Vermont charges $7.95 a month for the rental or lease of these units. I just read recently where someone purchased an 8000 on Ebay. Boy is he in for a surprise trying to use that thing. MrJ |

to force an update to the Explorer 8000 settop Unplug the box. wait 2 min. then press and hold the + while unplugged. plug in the box and and continue to hold for 5 seconds. hope this helps
will this erase all recordings on the system? just wondering cuz i feel an update is a good idea about now since im eagerly curious to see if the a/v inputs are activated or not. |

Actually PowerTV is the operating system, and both Pioneer's Passport software and Scientific Atlanta's SARA software (Scientific Atlanta Resident Application) can run on top of it, but not both. Cable operators have the option of ordering boxes from SA running the SARA software, or using another client application of their choice. The Pioneer Passport software is not exclusive to Time Warner, either. There is a little bit of information about it available from Pioneer (»www.pioneerbroadband.com/product···port.asp ). My guess is that Time Warner went with Passport over SARA because the Passport software is available for both Scientific Atlanta boxes, as well as older General Instrument/Motorola DCTs. Incidentally, Scientific Atlanta isn't the only manufacturer of boxes running PowerTV, either. There are also PowerTV equipped boxes from Pioneer and Pace Microelectronics (»www.pacemicro.com/). My understanding is that Time Warner of Cincinnati is going to start using the Pace boxes for non-DVR customers soon.
And for anyone who should be interested, Scientific Atlanta has a little bit of information about developing client software for the PowerTV OS (albeit the non-DVR versions) publicly available. »www.sciatl.com/developers/techdocs.htm |

| reply to Vchat20 It doesn't erase anything, but when I did it, it said that there was a mandatory update, and "The update will begin when the network is ready. This could take up to 20 minutes." Then for like an hour it gave messages about it couldn't find the update.. |

| I've noticed that Fastwarding and rewinding digital recordings no longer pauses every 2 to 5 seconds like it used to. They must updated the firmwear or something to make it work correctly because now I can go up to the 38x FF or RR and it flys right through with no pausing. |

It could be TW San Diego went with Passport because they heavily utilize Pioneer as their primary digital set-top platform. They seem to use SA only when Pioneer doesn't have a feature-set. For example, when they began rolling HD service, they deployed the SA3100HD. They are now deploying the Pioneer HD box instead. It'll be interesting to see if they do the same thing with the DVR boxes. |

yeah. i dont have the same exact setup, but something close. i had an old usb cable lying around and i just spliced it together into an old power supply fan and now its sitting on top of my dvr. really helps cool it down. |

i believe if you check back on another page in this thread, this is a common problem. even though it is a bug, its not just you and definitely not something to call the cable company about. |

| no digital workaround
also. im wondering if anyone has some kind of workaround to get the dvr working without any digital serivce. cuz we got our digital shut off tuesday. even though we still get regular analog, the dvr no longer works. i had to reroute the cable from the dvr to the tv to watch anything. major problem is, its not getting turned back on till late saturday. so far the only thing that im worried about is i got a show set to record on early saturday morning that i absolutely CANNOT miss. im sure theres no workaround to this, but its worth a shot to ask. my other cable box is doing the same, but its just plain digital and no dvr. the dvr is what im worried about the most. |

| Remote reset?
Is there a way to change to remote so that it does not power on my DVD? I know someone posted a sequence a while ago but that one didn't work for me. Maybe there are 2 remotes? Also, my delay on channel changes is getting worse and worse. SOmetimes its' as long as 8-10 seconds! Very frustrating. Any fixes out there? Thanks very much!
