| OOL Raising Prices - $44.95 w/cable service I'm still under my 2-year OOL contract for $29.99 a month until April, 2003. I have Optimum Preferred, and thought that my OOL price was going to rise up to $39.95 a month, until I just read on the website that the cost per month "with family cable or higher" is $44.95. When did this happen???
Mod Note: Update posted by engineer88 said by Engineer88: I have received some clarification from our Marketing Department:
quote: New monthly service fee listed is for new customers only. At this time, for current customers (both contract and non-contract) monthly service fee will remain the same.

I am currently paying $39.95 w/ the family preferred. They better not pull that crap with me. I rather pay $50 and get satelite instead if they do. -- »www.morbidangel.com/ »www.angelfire.com/apes/rottingnj/ |

Time for another sticky, I think.
Three price increases in a small timeframe, that's a lot, esepcially for the people annoyed about email problems, usenet problems and caps and the abuse cap. |

| reply to mahermusic Looks like I will be saying good bye to Cablevision completely. It just went up $10 for me 2 months ago because my contract was up. Now another $5? With cable TV rates going up? Looks like I may go with Covad's $40 DSL and Dish Network for TV.
I don't know about you guys but I know I don't get a 12.5% raise every year.
It has now gone up 66% since I first got OOL 1 year and 3 months ago, to me that is unacceptable. -- Visit the un-official OOL web site. »www.OptOnline.tk |

| reply to mahermusic Is that three price increases in a calendar year? If not, it's pretty close to it.
IMHO, it's the continued lack of competition that allows OOL to keep raising prices. Most people are lucky to have one choice, a few people have no choice for broadband and some have 2 choices.
Now that MSN and AOL have given up plans to create their own network and will just resell the LEC's or the Cable company's network, things won't be getting any better any time soon. I still can't believe that Tauzin-Dingel passed the house. Seems like many in Congress are intent on less competition, not more as far as broadband. At least the Senate was smart enough to realize it was a terrible bill and killed it.
Well, let this fun begin. This should be an interesting thread.
Please be civil. No personal attacks please. |

Re: OOL price went up??? What a joke. The day I got capped they raise prices. Lets do a quick comparison...
OOL $44.95. Great download speeds. Can be capped (doesn't take much...found out that today). News servers suck. 3 Day retention for text newsgroups too, ever try to follow a thread like that? Email servers are a joke. They limit and monitor your usuage. Add about 20-30 bucks if you opt for a different news server, email, and web hosting. Total about $65 - $75 if you opt for other services that OOL can not provide well.
Verizon online $79.95 for 1.5/384 business plan. Great news and mail, no need to get it with a different provider. Web hosting and if you have your own domain name they will set it up for your Verizon account with no monthly charge so you can use their webhosting and email servers with your DSL account.
Someone tell me again why OOL is so great besides the download speeds for speed test? -- Please Time Warner buy Cablevision...need decent Cable TV service and YES. |

johnsp join:2001-02-07 Syosset, NY | reply to mahermusic I wish a DSL outfit (anything but Verizon) sees this and offers OOL users a special package. Doesn't CV always do this? Optimum TV was the same a few years ago. Great deal for a year or two then $5 increases every 6 months.
I gotta find a cheap DSL that doesn't use PPoE like Verizon, I hated that extra software layer. |

It used to be the upload speeds, now that gets taking away if u use it too much. CV is losing their A+ reputation really fast now. P.C. Magazine, do another test, I would love to see the results now. -- »www.morbidangel.com/ »www.angelfire.com/apes/rottingnj/ [text was edited by author 2003-01-02 16:27:51] |

| reply to MotaBoy420$ Motaboy,
Most people don't pay for any extra services, so it's still $35 less than the Verizon business plan.
As far as 3 day retention, the retention on text groups is way longer that that. Binaries are around 3 days though.
Bottom line is that, for most people is that: 1) OOL is still a good value (the best?) compared to what else is out there. or 2) OOL is the only choice
Yes, it's frustrating, but that's why they are raising the price, because they can and we still have no where else to go that's better. |

Verizon has come a long way since they started DSL. The extra layer does not affect your speeds at all since Verizon sets their speeds a bit higher than advertised so you can get closer to the advertised speeds. Quick speed test my verizon plan.
2003-01-02 16:30:20 EST: 1439 / 374 Your download speed : 1439279 bps, or 1439 kbps. A 175.6 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 374485 bps, or 374 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
and that is with a 12/KB sec downloading going to on IRC from a OOL user...someone who should be capped but people who do legitimate work get capped. -- Please Time Warner buy Cablevision...need decent Cable TV service and YES. |

Text groups are only retained for 3 days. If my modem is not bricked yet I will hook it back up, take a pic, and show you. I know the text groups use to have a longer retention but over the last week or so it went down to 3 days. -- Please Time Warner buy Cablevision...need decent Cable TV service and YES. |
