 SBC Techs-advice needed

Is there a way to find out what speeds my line can handle BEFORE ordering and getting locked into a contract? I am 1,800 ft from the C.O., but have NO idea what my line quality is like. How do I find out what my line can carry? I'm considering taking the plunge and getting the 6.0/384 plan, but can't really justify getting locked into a $160/month pricing plan unless I know what I'll be getting. Is this unreasonable, or is there a way I can get it tested?

If you are only 1,800 ft, you will get the full 6.0/384. You must live close to Edmond Rd and Broadway. I live off Coltrane and Memorial...about five miles away.

I think the 6.0/384 plan only guarentees 1.5 down, or used to, but that close, you will get it all...

Great place for DSL! I have a transfer in to that CO but don't know if I will ever get it. If you decide on it, let us know how it turns out.

Unless you have an SBC remote terminal around you, you will not get 6.0 megs down

What is a remote terminal, and how do I know what it looks like and/or if there's one close by?

A remote terminal is where Telco brings the CO ( Central Office ) to your remote locale. Its a huge green electrical box that uses the DPG82 ( Digital Paragain 82 fiber ). I am 13,500 ft from my CO, but with the RT about 35 yds. from my apt, I am able to get 1.5-6.0 megs down. Unless you can throw a rock at your Central Office bldg. you wont get 6.0 megs or even close. To get 1.5 megs you need to be at least 2000 ft. from your CO.

I am awaiting for my line to go LIVE! Tuesday, and right now I have Covad TeleSoho 384-1.5/384 and it's the dreaded PPOE crap and it sucks. Covad believes in that safe mode shit to keep your line stable.

I CAN throw a rock at my CO. Maybe not hit it, but that's a different story.
I'm 1,800 ft from the C.O., per SBC techs. That should get me 6 megs, if my internal wiring is ok, right?

Yes, you should be fine, but I have learned this having dealt with 3 ISP's......The less phone jacks you use the better DSL is going to work for you. I have one line exclusively for DSL in my room. Alot of people wire one # throughout the whole house, thus finding later they have bad wiring someplace, so just be advised. I wired mine myself

I'm going to throw my "expertness" weight around and say that much of what grnbeano said is not true. 2kft is not the limit for 6M, let alone 1.5M, and you don't have be on an RT to see it.
I get 1.5M at 9,650' (actual) from the central office.

Actually grnbeano-
When I lived in Edmond, OK still, I had a SBC quoted line distance of 11.5k ft...
I was hitting a steady 128 up, and about 1.4 down, all the time. So I can see where nunya is coming from.

Not to mention, My buddy back home in TX has an 8k loop length...he's on the 6mb/384k plan. After upgrading his internal wiring to cat5, he's getting very close to those caps.

grnbeano,
I am glad nunya threw his "expertness" in here, he is of course quite correct, there were people on option 2 (6Mb down) on VOs before RTs started to open up. Bottom line is you never know what you are going to get until it is in and working.

Explain to me why when I have had 3 different ISP'S and still get no better d/l than a 480-512k? I am 13,500ft
My wiring is great, I have used 4 different routers, SBC has checked the line 3 times, and still same shit. Covad charges $69.95 for there shitty telesoho biz accts. Only thing that has never changed, I mean never! is the upload at 384k

My wiring is great...
The only wiring you know about is the last 50 feet out of 13500 feet. Being 13500 feet is pretty far. But this is a good case in point. I was 14500 feet out and I got 768k for almost 2 years, so even though I was further I still got a little better than you. There are people who were told they were even farther out than I was getting max rate. So you never really know expect for generalizations.

DSL lines are like snow flakes, they are all white and cold, but they are each different in subtle ways.
