Do have to uses the SBC Yahoo browser?

I'm about to order SBC Yahoo. I'm switching from AOL DSL when my line is release on Tuesday. I mostly use IE when browsing. Will I still be able to do this with SBC Yahoo? Will I even have to install that browser?

You don't have to use the Yahoo browser - regular IE will work.

You can use which ever browser you want. The supplied browser is basically IE with some "bolt-on" Yahoo modifications. As to installing it, I think it depends on how advanced your computer skills are.

Some people have installed all the software for registration and then uninstalled it after completing the sign-up. Others have avoided totally by just running selected install programs from certain directories on the CD. I think Enternet 300 might be the minimum required program if you don't have a router.

I haven't been through a SBC-Yahoo sign-up myself so others can give you details.

SoMiss,

In fact you can use as little or as much of the software they provide a you wish. Personally, I don't have any of the software loaded on any of machines, nor do I intend to. The same goes for the services supplied by Yahoo. You don't have to use any of it if you wish, although I imagine most will use their email system.

It is really up to you and how you want to use the service.

While I agree 100% with your sentiments about loading their software, I think some of it is required for registration and the SBC Yahoo EULA starts off by saying that to access SBC Yahoo DSL, the user must install the "required software" and goes on several times after that about "required software".

I'm not trying to be contentious here, but just trying to point out that some software is required to be installed (at least initially) and to make SoMiss2000 aware of that. The Yahoo browser isn't required though.

If you are PPPoE many times you will not have the proper software to get registered. Basically any Windows user before XP, so if you don't know better then you are pretty much required to load some of their software.

Believe me plenty of people here have migrated without loading any software.

I loaded none of their "custom" software on my machine either at initial install or my recent migration to SBC/Yahoo. Regular IE works just fine along with my Linksys PPPoE router.
If you do not use a router you will need some sort of a PPPoE client. Either OS based, or RASPPPoE which can be downloaded from an independent website, or Enternet which can be separately extracted from all the other junk on the SBC CD.

Thanks for all your help. I'm planning to buy a Linksys Cable/DSL 4 Port Router before the installation.

SoMiss2000,

I think that your choice of a router is the ultimate way to go. I've reached this conclusion after becoming less and less enchanted by Enternet and its sporadic connection problems on my system. Use a router and avoid Enternet, but you'll need to run Enternet if you ever call SBC tech support.

You don't need to by a router to escape Enternet300. A router is a good thing but if you have a single computer make sure you get it for the right reason. If you are having any problems with enternet and aren't using Win95 or NT then try RASPPPoE. It works very well and takes up very little disk and memory resources. If you are on XP, M$ provides a built in PPPoE support that seems to work fine. No doubt Enternet is a dog but there are free alternatives.

Of course if you want to share your connection on more than one PC then I would never argue against a router.

Yeah, I had one one time but when I got it home and couldn't get it to work with AOL, I returned it. I wish I'd kept it!

Flippant, thanks for the suggestion/recommendation for RASPPPoE. I use WinME.

I'm just learning the advantages of a cheap router, but this is what I like so far:

1. NAT protection provided it doesn't totally prevent the use of Net Meeting (I play no online games so that isn't a problem).
2. The "always on" functionality and the maintenance (for limited duration at least) of a fixed IP.
3. Sharing a connection is only a distant maybe.

To return this back to the original topic:
SoMiss2000 should review the excellent 0.0 SBC Yahoo FAQs before the actual sign-up session. I would have posted this link originally but I'm suffering brain damage from reading too many EULA's, TOS's, and AUP's.

So how did you register your new user name and password on your DSL line, without installing the software?
