| Covad + ZyXEL 600 series 645 modem NOT router
I just got Covad DSL, IT ROX SO MUCH BETTER THEN CABLE! My pings are incredible I ping 45ms to a Counter-Strike server in Portland Maine compared to my POS cable service pinged 150-200ms to that same server! I have a few problems I want to access 645 Modem through telnet but I cant seem to connect to it. I have it hooked up to my Linksys Befsr 41 Router the router does the PPPoE. But I would like to set up the modem to do the PPPoE and configure some of the settings in the modem. I cant seem to access certain web servers im guessing ports are blocked or some setting. I'm getting tons of 404 errors which make no sense im connected to the net some connections work some dont one of them I cant connect to is Covad.net so I cant access my email etc. But with my old cable modem every thing seems to work fine so Im guessing its a problem with my setup. Does the 645 Modem have a web setup page like the Linksys Router or only through telnet? And how would I access it the 645 behind my router? I'm guessing I would have to change the address of my router to something like 192.168.1.2. -- -My Setup- * MSI KT3 Ultra Motherboard * AMD Athlon XP+2200 * MSI Geforce 4 Ti4400 128MB * Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum * LinkSys Network Card * 512MB PC 2700 Samsung Memmory * Western Digtal SE 100GB * Quantum 16GB [text was edited by author 2003-01-07 23:38:40] |

| The 645M provided to me through SE/Covad only has a telnet interface. You may not be able to access it with the default config file loaded in the modem. I have found a workaround for it and can provide the details on how to do it, however if you make your modem unusable I take no responsibility. I don't think you'll be able to access the modem through the router as most SOHO routers won't route a local IP through the WAN port. Try hooking your modem directly to your PC and assigning it an IP in the 192.168.1.x range just make sure it's not 168.1.1 as that's the modems IP, try to telnet the modem. If you can't telnet it's being block by the config file. If this is the case and you still want to telnet the modem post back and I can give you the details of the workaround, keep in mind that just cause this has worked for me there are no guarantees. |

| Ok here's how you do it 1)Create a directory on your hard drive and put the ROM file(s) in it 2)go to Start>Run enter "cmd" 3)DOS window pops up 4)Change to the directory with the ROM files in it 5)type "ftp 192.168.1.1" (or use whatever your modems ip address may be) 6)At the user prompt just hit "enter" 7)enter password and hit "enter" (password could be admin, 1234, root or mspgzyx) 8)type "ls" 9)you should see two files, ras and rom-0, the ras file is the firmware, the rom-0 file is the configuration 10)type "bin" to but the ftp client into binary mode 11)type "get rom-0 localrom" where get is a command to download a file from the ftp host (the modem), rom-0 is the name of the file to download, and localrom is any name you should choose for the file to be named in the current directory of your hard drive. Doing this makes a backup of the current config in case something goes wrong. 12)Again you should have started the ftp client from the directory that has the ROM files in it, if this is not the case exit the client by typing "quit", change directories and start again, if you are in the correct directory, continue 13)type "put newrom rom-0" where put is the command, newrom is the name of the new ROM file, and rom-0 is the name it should be in the modem 14)the ftp client will automatically close 15)the modem will reboot 16)after reboot, type "telnet 192.168.1.1" 17)at the password prompt enter admin as this config changes the p/w PS. This config file changes the VPI/VCI to 8/35 you will have to change them back to 0/35 in the internet connection menu (#4 I think) |

| reply to eXzodious Thanks for you help! I did what you suggested and it let me telnet into the modem I did some searching in there with the configuration and couldn't find anything that would block my connection. I think I'll call Covad support unless any one has any idea as to what's going on. I couldn't find any firmware updates for the modem on ZyXEL's website maybe I'm not looking hard enough? | reply to eXzodious Thanks for the advice again. The non locked out rom seems to work now that I changed that setting. I'm getting good speed about 300/1400. But still I'm getting alot of timing out, 404, DNS errors can't check my mail etc. I thought this thing was supposed to work out of the box lol? My machine works fine with the cable modem (tcpip settings look fine) so I'm guessing its something to do with the router and modem still. If any one has any ideas as to whats going on that would be great ill take all the advice I can get. Probably going to call Covad tech support tomorrow afternoon. | reply to eXzodious All ready got all the tcp settings down for ADSL PPPoE. Still no good :'( I have the router's MTU function off maybe if I turn it back on and set it to that but I've heard thats not such a good idea to use the router's MTU. [text was edited by author 2003-01-08 06:49:34] |

| reply to eXzodious A 404 is a genuine error from the web server. That is to say, you'll only see it if you CAN connect fine to the web server, but the server just doesn't have the page you requested. There's nothing you can do about it at your end, except to complain to the webmaster.
Covad DNS is just sucky right now, at least for me. Try hardwiring the IPs of some different DNS servers and see if it helps (it did me).
JTater, thanks for the ROM, very cool. |
