psc2210 - receiving faxes

just got a hp psc2210 and hooked it up, fax won't work all the time, fax won't listen in and pick-up, sometimes does sometimes not, exchange machine, and changed answer machine, when answer machine is off fax picks up but when answer machine is on won't work right.
question - anything special i have to do to get fax working right?
