Photoshop tutorial: Static Flaming text

Here is a tutorial on how to make flaming text. It's very simple to do, have fun with it! It is a very simple tutorial, so anyone with photoshop can do it.

First off, start out by creating a new image with a black backround. The one I did is 500x300

Next, using white text, type in what ever you want your text to be. Don't make it fill up the entire image, because we will need some room for the flames. Cut and paste it in the image so it is centered.

Now go to filters, then stylize and wind. You can start by doing it from the right and clicking ok.

Hit ctrl-F, and it will repeat the step you just did. Now you have done wind twice form the right.

Go to effects>stylize>wind again, but this time switch it to coming from the left.

Once again, press ctrl F, so it does wind from the left a second time.

Now go to image>rotate canvas, and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise.

Press ctrl-F twice. This will do wind from the left ( actually the bottom of the text) twice.

Now like before, switch it to wind from the right, and do this twice.

Go to image and rotate canvas, and rotate it 90 degrees counter clockwise, so it is back to what it was before.

Now go to filters>distort>ripple. It will open up, and set it at 100% ( it's default)

Now go to filters>blur>gaussian blur. Set the blur to a radius of two pixels.

Now go to image>mode>grayscale. It will ask you to merge layers, click ok.

Now go to image>mode>indexed color. Once again if it asks to flatten all layers, click ok.

Now go to image>mode>color table. Change the color table to black body.

Now you should make a new copy of the same text, only in black. Place it over the fire text to it fits, and it should end up something like this

Feel free to post your creations here
I haven't tried it, but if anyone would want to do an animation, it could be done by alternating frames of text with two winds and text with wind only done to each side once. Also varying ripple sizes might make a difference.
To save your image as a JPEG, you may need to change the image back to RGB color instead of indexed color at the end.

The tutorial is for PS, so if you have that you could do it. You should probebly ask that in a different thread though.

Oi IDrinkFanta! I still didn't see where in the tutorial you created the colors of the flame. I'd like to make a green/white flame myself.

Well, it gets its color from the color table which looks like flame. It would be kind of hard to make green and white, because if you would try using this tutorial you would have to make a color table similar to the red/black/white one, but make it your specific colors.
You would have to make something similar to the attachmentt, but with your colors.

its not very hard to create a custom color table its kind of like creating a gradient. You just need to click on the first box and select the starting color, then on the last box to choose the ending color. by playing around with it you can create some really cool affects.

Ahhh you're right Lucid, it's pretty simple. What I did for this was trying to copy the fire colored one. WHat you do is click on the top left box )under custom) and drag it a few rows down. Then you can choose a color for the first box, and choose a color for the second box. I did it every 4 boxes or so, making the first box the last box of the previous color, and the next box what I wanted it to change to. For this one I made the table look like the second attachment.

OK, Here is my try at doing the Tutorial but using Paint Shop Pro. One big difference is PSP's "wind" effect doesn't create those very nice tendrils/streaks like PS's. However the smudge tool is your friend in this case. After appling PSP's wind I used the smudge tool to drag out the edges of the flames.

Now, the real 'trick' in Fanta's tut was the use of the color palette indexing to a grayscale image. I made a pallet for PSP that I thing is almost identical and have included it here for other PSP users.

Yeah it looks like you made good use of smudge. Came out really cool.
