Best Windows XP registry cleaner?

What's the best one? No trial stuff, for FREE, and for it to stay FREE. Regvac, it's just eh... it's the only section where I need a better utility so far.

Thanks for any suggestions

I myself use RegScrubXP 3.25 »www.webattack.com/get/regscrubxp.shtml
It also is Freeware. I have also used the above mentioned JV16 Power Tools. Great tool also.

I'll second nightfishings choice. This is a good program that the author works on a lot. It has a lot more than just a reg cleaner, but the reg cleaner does work very well.

I run Win2K PRO, similar platform and I also vote for jv16 Power Tools.

For further recommendations, Wilders has a poll going and you can see for yourself at:

Besides jv16 PowerTools which are very good, there is also RegSeeker. I have found that RegSeeker scans faster and finds more stuff than other cleaners.

If you decide to try RegSeeker, you may need to tell it how to ignore certain keys, since it is rather aggressive; see my thread explaining how to easily do this:

Heres a little known program that cleans your registry of downloaded files like pictures, movies, and other small stuff that the other programs skip.
And it's good for all Windows formats too.
EASYCLEANER 1.7

One thing,
This program is not to be used in place of a good registry program, but, it should be used along with a good registry cleaner to pick up the bits and pieces the better program leaves behind.
First run you regcleaner then run EASYCLEANER and you'll see what i mean.
And it is FREE!!!

I want to look at registry cleaners from an other side knowing that I will get a lot of remarks.
I have used jv16 and my backups were mostly 1 to 5 kb with downloaded files, deleted documents etc which "move up" in the registry and will be removed in time. My registry is 10 to 15 MB, thus a few thousand times as big. Why take risks for such small amounts?

It's not freeing up the HD, it's improving performance. That's my goal.
