Yahoo upgrade questions

I got the email today inviting me to upgrade to Yahoo.
Do I need to bypass my router during the upgrade?
After the upgrade, do I need to change the login in the router and if so will it be newname@sbcglobal.net?
Does the news server/news server login change?
If you don’t have to install any software upgrade, why does it immediately try to install the “Yahoo Install Manager”?

I got the same email today. All very good questions. I am still waiting a while to do this. I want to see if people are successful before doing it.

I also got the email inviting me to upgrade to Yahoo.

Yes, I think I will upgrade to SBC Yahoo DSL and "merge"
my Yahoo id, but I have a few questions. I have read all the FAQs,
but am not clear on a few points.

1) When my yahoo id is "merged", is it possible to still login
to yahoo with the just "merged" id, and see mail sent to me.
Or, is the only option to get to my mail is to logon to SBC Yahoo
with my xxx.ameritech.net id?

2) When I merge my free Yahoo email id, will my current structure,
twenty-nine email folders and inbox, and all my email filters,
be maintained, or will the "merge" process just dump all the
email from my yahoo id into my SBC Yahoo inbox?

Re: Yahoo upgrade questions

I chose not to merge my free Yahoo account because I wanted to keep an email address that isn’t tied to my ISP. If you merge it and then change ISP, it appears that you would have to pay Yahoo $10 if you want to keep the email ID.

kthansen, I would advise NOT to merge your e-mail for the reason janderso1 gave. If you ever drop SBC DSL service that e-mail address will by gone. But if you do, I believe you can still get to it through www.yahoo.com. All of your settings and folder for it will still be the same.

It simply forwards all the Yahoo! mail to the new account. You'll be unable to login to the Yahoo account any more.

In summary, don't merge the Yahoo id.

I'm not sure if this is an answer to your question...I didn't merge my Old Yahoo account...I still have it and if I'm in my new account and want to go to my old Yahoo Account...Just sign out of your new account and sign in to old account and up it comes...

Edit; typo...

Well, I did the migration this morning, even though the
migration page said to "wait till tomorrow".

Guess what, It appears to have worked perfectly and
immediately. Mail works fine, client & Web based.
I did not like SBC changing my default home page, but
easy to change back.

Oh yea, I DID NOT merge my free yahoo ID, as everyone
recommended. BUT, one minor problem, and probably of my
making, because of an option I took during the migration
process. I can not be logged on to SBC Yahoo, and free
yahoo at the same time in different browser windows.

The migration process asked me if I had a free yahoo id,
and I said no, so that probably caused my minor problem.

Does anyone know if there is something I can do about this
after the migration is done? Thanks

I believe the reason you can’t be logged on to both accounts at the same time is that they are trying to use the same cookie. My work around is to use a different browser for each account.

Hmmm, I don't use different browsers...I can login into one account and if I want to login into my other Yahoo account, I just sign out and sign into the other...With NO problem...

I not sure if this is what your asking...?...

Can you do this...I don't think so...I may be wrong...Wait I can login into my new Yahoo account and still have my old Yahoo messenger working...But that's different then having two windows with different accounts opens...

Maybe this is semantics, I don't change browsers, I just change sign-inns...I don't considered this different browsers...Then again you may be right, I just don't considered this separate browsers... ...

Edit; Ok I get it, you can also use different browsers...Duh...

I'll be watching the results, too....

I got no email today, though...

What I'd really like is: Tell me what to change (if anything) on my Linky setup screen.....
and also on my Outlook 2002 email account,
and Newsgroups info for Outlook Express ....

I'm not interested in downloading any Internet Explorer add on...

Oops! You will have to make changes, I just realized. It only updates mail settings for Outlook Express, so you'll need to change your settings for Outlook (although the servers you're currently using will still work for an undetermined amount of time).

Mail servers will be pop.ameritech.yahoo.com and smtp.ameritech.yahoo.com, and login name will be the full uid@ameritech.net.

OK I just cut & Pasted it into my 'conversion' text file on the desktop... Once I get the email to do so, I'll change the Outlook 2002 settings, and try it. Thanks for making it software-less!!

The items that will be most useful to me are having both dialup and DSL connected at the same time, nationwide dialup, online storage, and web mail (although I already have mail2web.com as a workaround for web mail). However, I plan to monitor this process for a while before I do the upgrade.

Attention: Ameritech.Net Members

Thank you for your interest in SBC Yahoo! DSL. Due to the overwhelming interest in this new service, we are experiencing a delay in registering our members on the new service. Please try again tomorrow.

Sure gives me the warm fuzzy that their migration servers can't keep up with demand. What else in their infrastructure can't?

You have to go into "My Account" from the SBC Yahoo homepage and import the sub accounts. Problem is (at least for me) is after the 7 - 15 times it takes for me to log into the homepage, I get "This page cannot be displayed" for almost EVERY link on it!!

Um... How can I upgrade on a Linux system? All my systems have Linux or BSD install, no Windows or Mac systems. I go to the upgrade site as said in the email, click Upgrade Now, and get taken to a page which detects browser and platform, then redirects you based on that. Of course, it does nothing for me.

Little help.

I've been a subscriber since May 2000 ... I'm paying a very high rate since I never redid my contract... reason being I'd rather pay more and have no one touch anything... (if you subscribed around the same time you understand)....

However, I want to sign a new contract for the considerably cheaper rates for at least a month before I cancel my UL ...

So... my question is... How long do we have before we have to switch? I want to sign up w/new service, but have it run in parallel w/my UL (using LS) .. but I want to leave my UL out of it (even name association) as long as possible.... it's working great now... if it's not broke don't fix it ....

I compiled a FAQ to submit to the Ameritech FAQ. Let me know what everyone thinks. A lot of this is copy and paste from this thread.

How do I migrate?
Just visit the website »yahoo.sbc.com/activatedsl/download.html

Do I need to bypass my router or make any other system changes during the upgrade?
No, just visit the site and run through the registration.

What changes will be made?
1. Your new e-mail settings will be POP:pop.(domain).yahoo.com SMTP:smtp.(domain).yahoo.com (ex. pop.ameritech.yahoo.com). The outgoing server requires authentication and the login id needs to be (userid)@ameritech.net
2. Instead of accessing your account information at www.ameritech.net you will now log into sbc.yahoo.com. This site has more features and is more stable.
3. Up to 10 sub-accounts.
4. "Premium Services" that include the ability to upgrade the size of your inbox.
5. Web based e-mail access.
6. Nationwide dialup access.

What about me e-mail address, speeds, etc.?
Your e-mail address will be the same. Your speed plan will not include a gaurunteed minimum speed. 192-364, 364-768, 768-1.5, 1.5-4.0

Do I need to install any new software?
Simpy put, no. Non-XP and Mac users have the option of installing the connection manager program that runs Enternet 300 in the background and monitor your connection for possible errors. And non-Mac users can download the Yahoo! browser (Internet Explorer with a different skin) and/or SBC Dialup Connection Manager.

What will happen if someone doesn't migrate their account voluntarily?
www.ameritech.net will be disappearing so you won't have a web page to log into to change your password or manage your account.

Is there anything at all about this that could possibly screw up a connection, get someone's speed capped, or anything like that?
No.

Will these mail servers be more stable than the crappy servers that Ameritech currently has?
I would guess they will be about the same.

So what are the Premium Services?

LOL! I'm all for the usage of the phrase "crappy servers" in any FAQ. :D

checked this am... Still no email....

Here's another question... I have two computers. One with Outlook 2002 for email, and Outlook Express 6 for Newsgroups.
Other computer has Outlook Express 5.5 but is configured to "leave mail on server"...

As, if, and when I migrate over, on main system, do I put the same info mentioned on the first couple posts in Outlook Express, too?

And could someone explain in clearer detail the problem that DSLKIA's problem was, so that I don't fall into it as well?

By the way... I did not set up my system, it was done over a period of nearly a month, with 2 different installers.. (First attempt at install was aborted by installer, who took the paperwork & modem with him, only to be completed by 2nd person two weeks later, after he left to get a modem, and many calls to someone to get info on account the first guy took). I vaguely remember something about an email problem the second installer had, one that the 2nd fella found pit that installer #1 did something wrong, but didn't leave any notes), but he eventually got me an email address that I've been using since. About the only thing I got was the ID# of the line, and my email address & password.
It was this reason why I never got a contract, welcome folder, anything from my install.

I DO NOT KNOW IF ANY OTHER EMAIL ADDRESSES EXIST FOR ME (other than the one I am using)...

If anyone in the "know" can look into this, this might be the reason I haven't received an email yet...

Re: Yahoo upgrade questions

Next question...I signed out of Yahoo/DSL...And signed into my old yahoo account with 'E' and Yahoo Messenger...Am I OK...?...Or will I have to keep my new Yahoo account to get on...?...This seems to easy...Or I didn't do something right...

Edit...Just signed on to my router as id@ameritech.net and worked, this is the new one I just put in, actually old one I haven't used in a few years...Is this right...?...I thought we would have a different sign on...?...

Told you not to go first. Change confuses you.

Your ID stays the same. Your e-mail stays the same. Your login stays the same. Your SMTP and POP SERVERS change to:

POP: pop.ameritech.yahoo.com
SMTP: smtp.ameritech.yahoo.com

I still haven't received my e-mail, so I'm not going to risk changing yet.

Re: Yahoo upgrade questions

I'm home under the weather, so I needed to get my mine off my stomach..I didn't receive my E either...So as long as I was home I decided I might as well migrate...I think all went ok...

I noticed someone asked about their old Yahoo E, etc....Just sign out of your new Yahoo and and sign back in to your old/other account and that will come up...If you need to change something sign out and back into your new SBC/Yahoo account...

You can log into your old/other Yahoo account to receive your E (and Messenger) there and Outlook will receive your old A'Tech E's now SBC/Yahoo...

Edit; Lev just got my migrate letter... Around 12noon...
