| Yahoo upgrade questions
I got the email today inviting me to upgrade to Yahoo. Do I need to bypass my router during the upgrade? After the upgrade, do I need to change the login in the router and if so will it be newname@sbcglobal.net? Does the news server/news server login change? If you dont have to install any software upgrade, why does it immediately try to install the Yahoo Install Manager? -- Jim Anderson

I got the same email today. All very good questions. I am still waiting a while to do this. I want to see if people are successful before doing it.

| I also got the email inviting me to upgrade to Yahoo.
Yes, I think I will upgrade to SBC Yahoo DSL and "merge" my Yahoo id, but I have a few questions. I have read all the FAQs, but am not clear on a few points.
1) When my yahoo id is "merged", is it possible to still login to yahoo with the just "merged" id, and see mail sent to me. Or, is the only option to get to my mail is to logon to SBC Yahoo with my xxx.ameritech.net id?
2) When I merge my free Yahoo email id, will my current structure, twenty-nine email folders and inbox, and all my email filters, be maintained, or will the "merge" process just dump all the email from my yahoo id into my SBC Yahoo inbox?

Well, I did the migration this morning, even though the migration page said to "wait till tomorrow".
Guess what, It appears to have worked perfectly and immediately. Mail works fine, client & Web based. I did not like SBC changing my default home page, but easy to change back.
Oh yea, I DID NOT merge my free yahoo ID, as everyone recommended. BUT, one minor problem, and probably of my making, because of an option I took during the migration process. I can not be logged on to SBC Yahoo, and free yahoo at the same time in different browser windows.
The migration process asked me if I had a free yahoo id, and I said no, so that probably caused my minor problem.
Does anyone know if there is something I can do about this after the migration is done? Thanks

I believe the reason you cant be logged on to both accounts at the same time is that they are trying to use the same cookie. My work around is to use a different browser for each account. -- Jim Anderson

I don't really understand all that's going on with this anymore. I haven't been paying close attention for some time now.
1. What will happen if someone doesn't migrate their account voluntarily? Will it eventually be done for them without their knowledge or consent?
2. Is there anything at all about this that could possibly screw up a connection, get someone's speed capped, or anything like that?
3. Will these mail servers be more stable than the crappy servers that Ameritech currently has?

| I compiled a FAQ to submit to the Ameritech FAQ. Let me know what everyone thinks. A lot of this is copy and paste from this thread.
How do I migrate? Just visit the website »yahoo.sbc.com/activatedsl/download.html
Do I need to bypass my router or make any other system changes during the upgrade? No, just visit the site and run through the registration.
What changes will be made? 1. Your new e-mail settings will be POP:pop.(domain).yahoo.com SMTP:smtp.(domain).yahoo.com (ex. pop.ameritech.yahoo.com). The outgoing server requires authentication and the login id needs to be (userid)@ameritech.net 2. Instead of accessing your account information at www.ameritech.net you will now log into sbc.yahoo.com. This site has more features and is more stable. 3. Up to 10 sub-accounts. 4. "Premium Services" that include the ability to upgrade the size of your inbox. 5. Web based e-mail access. 6. Nationwide dialup access.
What about me e-mail address, speeds, etc.? Your e-mail address will be the same. Your speed plan will not include a gaurunteed minimum speed. 192-364, 364-768, 768-1.5, 1.5-4.0
Do I need to install any new software? Simpy put, no. Non-XP and Mac users have the option of installing the connection manager program that runs Enternet 300 in the background and monitor your connection for possible errors. And non-Mac users can download the Yahoo! browser (Internet Explorer with a different skin) and/or SBC Dialup Connection Manager.
What will happen if someone doesn't migrate their account voluntarily? www.ameritech.net will be disappearing so you won't have a web page to log into to change your password or manage your account.
Is there anything at all about this that could possibly screw up a connection, get someone's speed capped, or anything like that? No.
Will these mail servers be more stable than the crappy servers that Ameritech currently has? I would guess they will be about the same.
So what are the Premium Services? »support.sbcglobal.net/other/4566.shtml -- »www.tfn.net/~jdbaucum

| checked this am... Still no email....
Here's another question... I have two computers. One with Outlook 2002 for email, and Outlook Express 6 for Newsgroups. Other computer has Outlook Express 5.5 but is configured to "leave mail on server"...
As, if, and when I migrate over, on main system, do I put the same info mentioned on the first couple posts in Outlook Express, too?
And could someone explain in clearer detail the problem that DSLKIA's problem was, so that I don't fall into it as well?
By the way... I did not set up my system, it was done over a period of nearly a month, with 2 different installers.. (First attempt at install was aborted by installer, who took the paperwork & modem with him, only to be completed by 2nd person two weeks later, after he left to get a modem, and many calls to someone to get info on account the first guy took). I vaguely remember something about an email problem the second installer had, one that the 2nd fella found pit that installer #1 did something wrong, but didn't leave any notes), but he eventually got me an email address that I've been using since. About the only thing I got was the ID# of the line, and my email address & password. It was this reason why I never got a contract, welcome folder, anything from my install.
I DO NOT KNOW IF ANY OTHER EMAIL ADDRESSES EXIST FOR ME (other than the one I am using)...
If anyone in the "know" can look into this, this might be the reason I haven't received an email yet... -- Looking for 1939 Indian Motocycle
