| Re-started what? Did you cycle off/on the modem? Have you done anything else, like use your dial-up modem recently? [text was edited by author 2003-01-25 01:07:24] |

| reply to isfdummer Virtual DoS... I turned in a lousy 78 and 88 up on a speed test, then, before I blamed Verizon, I got curious. Yep, now, in addition to all of the damn 137 hits, we're being blasted with a new worm on 1434 udp (see security for breaking news)... I blackholed everything with a fake IP forward ("DMZ") at the router, and I'm now back to 700+ down and 133 up... could be you're running against the same lame ankle biter stunt (Gads, I hate script kiddies... did I ever mention that? In the dictionary, it actually says, "script kiddie - [see "lamer"]", I've heard) --- but that solved my dilemma... here's a little run through, for router owners...
- make sure you have "block incoming requests" or whatever you set to go full stealth...
- in IP forward or DMZ, put in the IP address of a non-existent!!! machine in your subnet. Don't use an active address!!! The object is to create a "brain surgery with a hatchet" quick fix by making a "blackhole" or "bitbucket" that all the incomings drop into and never return from...
On a standalone direct modem connection, best I can offer is to make sure your firewall's set for full stealth, and cross your fingers... oh, yeah, I'm hot... I'm hot as a 30mm gatling gun after an hour of straight firing, you bet... ever wanted to crawl through a cat5 and strangle someone with the other end of it??? -- "Anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor." | reply to isfdummer No. You're getting hammered with the same trash we're all taking, from people who are infected. Best you can do is make sure you're blocking 'em, and since you don't have a router, I doubt even stealth will be much help reclaiming the lost bandwidth... damn things are from a worm that's hunting SQL servers to infect, maybe, or looking for buddies. Together with all the 137 probes, lately, they're eating up our pipeline with garbage, and effectively DoS'ing us. Alas, people with more bandwidth are probably just getting more garbage... fellow in security had his servers on their knees from this stuff. Batten down the hatches...
I'll keep an eye on things, but for right now best thing you can do is treat it like a bad storm ... a really bad, hail, snow, wind and ice storm. Yuch. -- "Anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor."

| argggg i keep getting unsynced... could it be from this worm?? Zone alarm is blocking them and they sort of slowed down now. My speed went froma nice 27 to 212 now but still a long shot from where i was and wha i was used to. What can be done about this worm eating up all teh band width?? mike |

| reply to isfdummer Yeah, ZA should be effective at blocking, but I'm not sure why that would cause any synch problems... hm. Maybe it's loading Verizon's equipment handling all that inbound traffic?
NOTE: this is NOT specific to any ISP. I'm beginning to believe that we have a really nasty new version of nimda/code red floating around, targeting SQL servers, instead of IIS... seems to be shared by a few others... there's an ongoing and VERY active thread in security, right now, on this one. I also suspect the worm is using some algorithm to select random IP blocks to explore, and that the scope will probably just expand, and cover more ISP's and users across the internet... it seems like some people are getting hammered hard, and others are just starting to notice exploration, with no degradation of service... yet. If things progress like this, no ISP, no type of service, will be better or worse off... this is absolutely not isolated to Verizon, to DSL, to cable, to dialup... it's a worm run amok.

| reply to isfdummer If you are losing sync it is not a worm or your PC. so don't worry about uninstalling raspppoe and reinstalling winpoet.
The throughput problem is caused by a poor signal between your modem and the DSLAM. Unplug everything from your phone jacks (check the ones you know don't have anything plugged into them, they have a mysterious habit of plugging unfiltered devices into themselves). Do you have (or has a previous resident in this home had) an alarm system monitored on this phone line? Do your utility meters connect to your phone system to call in and report usage?
try running the rj11 directly from the phone jack to the modem (no 2 way splitters, no phone extension cords, no surge protectors) try a 2nd rj11. If you are still losing sync call tech support and advise them of the sync issue. make sure they know it is intermittent. |

| reply to isfdummer yeah, I see no reason the worm carnage would have anything to do with synch. That's almost invariably a problem in the inside wiring on your end. But the worm (or whatever this thing is) is definitely huge. If your problem's just a choked pipe, that could be the reason; but if you have other symptoms, you need to check for issues on your lines, as a first step. Really do hope you get things worked out... if it's the flood, there isn't anything much you can do without a router, but if it's a wiring issue, you have a good chance of getting it ironed out, with a little work... well. I'm off to grab some rest... let it rain. --- wish you luck. -- "Anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor." Elizabeth I, in Francis Bacon, Apophthegms, 1625 |
