| Chris, Most un-installers do very little unless you monitor your System constantly which consumes resources, I have not found one that accomplishes anything more than the Built-in Windows Utility(Add/Remove Programs). Start/Find/Files& Folders and do a search for the Software Name & the Company Name and delete, also do the same in Reg-edit. You should always Back-up your registry, in the event something goes wrong merely restore the changes. The brief answer NO.

can i rephrase this fastez...
most un-installers can do very little unless you have used the uninstaller to monitor the installation of the software.
you only need to use an un-installer to monitor the installation process, they do not need to be running all the time and so do not "constantly" hog resources.
quote: I have not found one that accomplishes anything more than the Built-in Windows Utility(Add/Remove Programs).
there are others that are far superior than Add/Remove Programs AShampoo is a good one.. i'm sure others can suggest more. Even if you don't use an uninstaller, programs such as installwatch & inctrl4, which do not uninstall but monitor installations are excellent. once you know how to use uninstallers and\or installation monitors correctly they do an excellent job - especially for Windows 98. WinXP has a better Add\Remove programs. |

fastez is spot on about how to remove it if the program has no uninstall program...
you can also look in the programs folder to see if you can find a file called something like "unins000.exe" or "unwise.exe". If a file like this exists then you stand a chance of being able to uninstall the program properly.
this is the file that add\remove programs looks for so when i'm in your situation i just click on it... works 5% of the time or edit the registry to point to it... works 80% of the time.... if these don't work then i there is no other option but to use the method fastez described.
if you want to try this let me know but even though fastez option isn't the most secure its sometimes the only option...

syzygal, Thanks for the rephrase, I sometimes forget everyone does not know exactly what I am thinking. If you make a Registry Copy and use the normal Add/Remove(Windows Utility) with a Program that has an un-install you have already accomplished what 3rd Party Software Programs accomplish without the extra bloat.
Fobulous, Re-read the question, Chris does not have an un-installer, I think in 99.9% of the un-installs I've tried Windows Add/Remove Utility does just as good as the 3rd Party Software Utilities at un-installing Programs.(The ones that have an Un-installer)

np... we're all trying to help... just making sure we don't mislead anyone said by fastez1 : Windows Add/Remove Utility does just as good as the 3rd Party Software Utilities at un-installing Programs.
It really depends what operating system you are using. In the case of Win98 & Win98SE this is simply not true... i have tested Cleansweep, Ashampoo and many others.
Since winxp has a new installation routine i tend not to bother with these programs anymore. however, if i had to install programs on a win98 machine, i would not do so without at the very least an installation monitor such as regcleaner, inctrl4, installwatch. they also make it a breeze to identify the odd weird file that in the past turned out to be a virus or spyware which wasn't removed by an add\remove programs. said by fastez1 : think in 99.9% of the un-installs I've tried Windows Add/Remove Utility does just as good as the 3rd Party Software Utilities
how do you know if add\remove works just as well? do you use an installation monitor or installation log of each program to check files? or do you have cleansweep to check redundant registry entries? unless of course your on winxp and the a few stray registry entries are no big deal as is the case with me |

| Shzgal, I admit I do use several Registry Cleaners along with Regedit and I have always made a copy of the Registry prior to new Software Installations. Yes I have tried several of the Monitors and Cleansweep, in my case all of these Programs either overlap or duplicate my other Software. I use the routine I described and made comparisons when Cleansweep was "Quarterdeck" and also Inctrl at various times with W98SE,XP and W2000. Trying the Un-install both ways my findings did not justify the additional Software you mention.
In regard to the Spyware and Virus problems I have other Software which specifically deals with eliminating those problems prior to their becoming problems. I have not looked into Ashampoo, I will have a look at it as I am always looking for lazier and more efficient way to accomplish the task.
To a great degree I believe each of us search for one thing, find something close and adjust accordingly, you have found one way that serves your purpose and I another. I continue to search for new and better ways and appreciate your help and suggestions.

i think we're saying the same thing... this is the most important thing to do... i found using an installation monitor & reg-edit (or an advanced registry editor) usually did the job. quote: Trying the Un-install both ways my findings did not justify the additional Software you mention.
I agree but sometimes i have to bear in mind that some one who comes here for help with add\remove programs may not be familiar with the registry let alone identifying registry keys on an installation log. Uninstallers can be helpful for these users and it for such users particularly on win98 that i recommend it. Perhaps i should have made this clear. Hopefully you noted that i would install "at the very least an install monitor" on win98... again we're using the same methods. quote: In regard to the Spyware and Virus problems I have other Software which specifically deals with eliminating those problems prior to their becoming problems.
rofl... stop showing me up!
quote: I have not looked into Ashampoo, I will have a look at it as I am always looking for lazier and more efficient way to accomplish the task.
rofl... i likes... as you said many of them overlap and so i would often find myself using a couple of monitors but only because of their functionality... not because one did a better job than the other... in the end i found myself using installwatch since this captured more installation files than any other i'd used apart from inctrl. if you can recommend any better installation monitors than these i would appreciate it.
i made the following notes of AShampoo if your interested: (iwpro=install watch pro)
Pros Very precise installation capture Good at-a-glance registry/system files interface
Cons Does not export data as well as iwpro Does not give installation summmary as iwpro e.g total # of files added/deleted etc No file search feature as iwpro
Since you don't use an uninstaller i'm not really sure if you'll be that interested in it unless you're feeling real lazy
quote: To a great degree I believe each of us search for one thing, find something close and adjust accordingly, you have found one way that serves your purpose and I another.
you're absolutely right yet in this case i think we use much the same methods.

that sounds so cool... and i u too

yes... in this instance
for future reference: sometimes you might have more than one product from a manufature e.g Electronic Arts NBA Live 2003 & Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2003
the folder (i.e registry key) would be called Electronic Arts... and its two corresponding sub-folders (sub-keys) would be NBA Live & Tiger Woods...
i think you can see what i'm getting at... deleting the Electronic Arts Key would delete registry entries for both games...
consider getting a good installation monitor...
good luck |
