| Do Not Install Connection Manager
The phone techs of the forum strongly suggest that you do not install Connection Manager. It is a piece of software which was a great idea, in theory, but is riddled with bugs, and will ultimately prevent you from connecting. Every good phone tech knows that disabling Connection Manager is Step One to getting a customer reconnected. It will report that you have a corrupt TCP/IP stack when you don't. It will drain your system resources. It will cause problems in every area of your system. It also eats small children.
Once again, the phone techs of the forum strongly suggest that you should not install and use Connection Manager. Enternet 300 or Windows XP PPPoE works fine. Leave a good thing alone.

| Customer: I can't connect... Connection Manager says... Me: Alright, Sir/Ma'am. See the little Connection Manager space ship icon in the bottom right corner by the clock? Do me a favor and right click on it and choose Exit or Close. Then go to Start > Programs > Efficient Networks > EnterNet 300...

Also go to: Start > Control Panel > Add Remove > Yahoo Connection Manager > Delete. So that it doesn't eat your small children when you aren't looking. If you don't, you will have to do the above, every time you reboot.:)
EDIT: Also, while you're in Enternet300, grab that profile icon and drag it to your desktop. Or better yet go to "Connections" at the top of the window and check "Launch Enternet300 at Windows Startup" and "Auto-connect" [text was edited by author 2003-01-28 06:46:19] |

| reply to AmeritecTech Is it only small children? Why I ask is because I am missing a dog. I haven't seen him since I got my DSL connection installed. j/k
That's one reason why I only install the basics when I get software.
Thanks for the headsup. -- American, and proud of it! |

| reply to AmeritecTech So, what do I need to do if I have already installed the connection manager? Once I have uninstalled it how do I connect?
Also, I have seen some discussions about the "ramp-up" period. In the FAQ it stated that this began once the order was closed. How do I know when the order has been closed? My service began last Thursday, but my order due date was today Jan 28th. So far all of my speed tests have been right around 320 MPS.
Thank You

| reply to AmeritecTech How to connect once you have uninstalled Connection Manager:
Windows XP: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel 2. Double click Network Connections 3. There should be a section titled Broadband Connections. Underneath that there should be an icon that says "DSL Connection" or something similiar. Drag this icon to your desktop and just double click it whenever you wish to connect.
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000: 1. Go to Start > Programs > Efficient Networks > EnterNet 300 > EnterNet 300 2. A window titled "EnterNet 300 Profiles" should open. There should be 2 icons. One labeled Create a new Profile, and another usually labeled something like "DSL Connection." Drag the DSL Connection icon to your desktop and just double click it whenever you wish to connect.
The Connection Manager software uses these icons to connect, so if you already had Connection Manager installed, these icons should already be in the places mentioned above. |

| reply to AmeritecTech How to setup a SBC Yahoo! DSL Connection from scratch!
Windows XP: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel 2. Double click on Network Connections 3. Click the link on the left side that says "Create a new connection" 4. Welcome to the New Connection Wizard! Click Next. 5. Choose the top option labeled "Connect to the Internet." Click Next. 6. Choose the middle option labeled "Setup my connection manually." Click Next. 7. Choose the middle option labeled "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password." Click Next. 8. It asks for an ISP Name. Basically, this is just going to name the icon, so name it whatever you prefer. We usually recommend "DSL Connection." Click Next. 9. It asks for your username and password. Enter both those in, and then uncheck the bottom checkbox that says "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection." If you feel confident that you know how to turn this off later, you may leave this box checked. When done with all of that, Click Next. 10. Completing the New Connection Wizard! Check the box that says "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop." Click Finish.
Win 95/98/ME/NT/2000: You will need a PPPoE client installed to connect to DSL. EnterNet300 is the one SBC includes with all of it's software, and it is the one you will need to have installed if you ever call in for tech support. It should be located on the DSL Installation CD you recieved from SBC. If you have lost the CD, i'm sure you can download it from somewhere. I'd recommend doing a search in Google.
1. Go to Start > Programs > Efficient Networks > EnterNet 300 > EnterNet 300. 2. A window titled "EnterNet 300 Profiles" should open. Double click on the icon that says "Create New Profile" 3. It will ask for a connection name. This is just going to name the icon, so put whatever you like. We recommend DSL Connection. Click Next. 4. Enter your Username and Password like it asks. Click Next. 5. The profile wizard will now try to locate the servers on your network. Click Next. 6. It will either say the wizard located servers, or was unable to. If you recieve the "unable to locate servers" message, call Tech Support and they will help you out However, if it does locate a server, you're good to go. Click Next. 7. Successfully created a new connection profile! Click Finish. 8. An icon with the name you chose should now appear in the Profiles window. Drag it to the desktop to create yourself a shortcut, and you're done! |

| reply to AmeritecTech 320 MPS?
Not sure exactly how the Rampup process works, but I do know that 320kbps is what you would be getting w/ a cap of 384kbps (thanks AmeritecTech for jamming that fact into my head on numerous occasions lol).

| Thanks, it says that I am about 10130 feet from the CO.
I just called SBC. It seems that they had me signed up for the wrong package. They said that they would change it and that the due date for the change is Feb 4th.
Thank you all for your help. |

| reply to AmeritecTech I completely agree with the thread topic, BUT, I have seen the connection manager software work the best under XP. In older systems, ie 98, ME, I would go with Enternet 300 alone as the connection software.

I just word like, "Oh, this is our first release of this program and our guys are still working out all of the bugs. It runs good for most people but sometimes is just goes hay wire so since it's giving you problems I'll just set you up with a better connection." Then I remove connection manager from the start-up menu and create a DSL connection shortcut to the desktop. That way quality can't nail me. -- »www.tfn.net/~jdbaucum |
