Disgusted with cable 1st few hours

Good evening all.I had the displeasure of having cable installed today! I ordered it, they made an appointment and showed on time. Cable was installed and all went well until the installer left and I did a speed and ping test. WOW what a disappointment. Download speed 300+or-, pings in the 400ms area. I have an RCA DCM 235 modem, ( if that makes a difference )
Besides call them back for a tech. can I do anything to improve the situation?
With my one way sat. I was downloading 800KB/s+or-.

Windows Millenium
512 mb SDram
ZoneAlarm 3
NAV 2002

Any ideas, modem tweaks?

P.S. It's comcast

Give it a few hours to optimize and call them if it doesn't improve.

Tweak tester says all looks good! My last download speed test was 200+kb/s down. I ran the tweak tester earlier and used DR Tcp. Still lousy speeds.
No modem tweaks? I'm a little surprised.
I'll call them tomorrow.
The speed is so slow I can't do a line test. Waited 30 minutes for it to complete before I gave up.
Thanks and have a good night

Just to keep you good people informed, I called comcast today. They assumed that, from reading out of their book, one of the problems was a fragmented HDD!!! What idiots! How could a computer have a ping of 1000+ms and download speed of 200kb/s from a fragmented HDD. My drive btw is clean. Reformat/reinstall Nov,2002. Less than 2% fragmentation. 76% free space. TIF's, temp files and cookies cleaned daily.
Anyway she diagnosed the problem as a weak signal to the modem. A "tech" will be out tomorrow afternoon to raise the signal strength.
Sorry 'bout the rant, just venting.
Will let you know how it goes.

Well here's an update. After 6 or so calls to comcast tech support they made an appointment for Sat. 3pm to adjust my signal. At 3:20pm comcast called to find out if the tech had arrived. I answered no and she said thank you and hung up! That was all I heard from them until I called today ( Sunday ). They never mentioned the missed appointment nor did they say why it wasn't kept. We made another appointment for friday 3pm. We'll see what happens this time.
Today I noticed the directv receiver is no longer in my house, I cannot find it! Not only did they take the sat. dish and tv receiver they took all the cable and the modem too.
Doesn't this either belong to me or directv?
The deal is I sell them my dish and they take the sale price ( $400 ) off my bill in the next 16 months.
What a mess I've gotten myself into! Meanwhile I'm stuck with 90kb/s up and 200kb/s +or- down!
Some story, huh?

One problem solved! I'm new to cable so excuse me. Latest test results. 1.5 down and 130kb/s up. That's good enough for me. Now to get the tv receiver back and I'm all set. Thanks for listening to my headaches.I'll be back soon, maybe to help others.
Thanks a million.
P.S. All I did was shut the modem off for the night, when I turned it back on,the above is what I got.

Commonly referred to as a Power Cycle. It solves most of my problems. Most likely Comcast screwed up the config it sent to your modem. Just outta curiosity.. what kinda modem do you have?

And a slight P.S. I finally found a fellow Holmdelian on DSLR

carbonfour,
Thanks for your interest. I have a RCA DCM 235.
I'm sure you read about my problems. Obviously I don't know much about cable connections or cable modems. New to this kind of stuff. I don't often post on this forum and am not familiar with the ins and outs.
Right now my speeds are good, both up and down. I'll learn as I go I guess.
Have a good night

Open your browser and go to 192.168.100.1 you should be able to see your signal levels there. Modems like to transmit upstream between 40 and 54 and downstream between -15 to +15, your snr should be above 30 db. If the above url doesn't go to the modem diag page type moreInfo.html after the .1

keo eke, I followed your advice but don't know what to do. I stayed on the site for a while but don't know what to look for or expect. The tests just keep running and say complete. Do I get any results or does this web site do the tuning and you X out? I don't see any results. How long should I wait?
Told you I was new!
Need more directions.

Is this the screen you got? If so click on signal and scroll down and look at the upstream, downstream and snr levels and report back. If you are only getting the tuning page try this one 192.168.100.1moreInfo.html

Does the RCA DCM 235 Modem even have a diagnostic page? I've never worked with it.

Docsdiag should help you get some answers.

I not sure you may have to type in diagnostics after the 192.168.100.1 for that model, no space after the .1

keo eke, That's not the screen I'm seeing. I don't know how to do a screen capture ( if that's what it takes ) to show you. I'm seeing "Thompson Cable Modem Diagnostics". Below that I get "Cable signal: ready" Below that I get A box "tuning" below that I get a box "ranging". No clickable links, no results but the test continues to run on and on.
Here "192.168.100.1moreinfo html" I get "page cannot be displayed".

Try 192.168.100.1/diagnostics.html or 192.168.100.1/signal.html . To capture a screen hit Ctrl+Prt Scr then open MS Paint from Programs-accessories and in edit click paste than save as a .jpg not .bmp if you don't get the hang of it right away just type the url that comes up when you type 192.168.100.1 in your next post and maybe we can get you to the signal level page.

Well those links don't go to my internal web page so bigjer try just typing them in. I will have to work on posting links in threads, sorry. Check out the link that Optimized has in the post above.

For the RCA cable modems, you may need to temporarily set up a static IP address and subnet mask. The settings that have worked for me are (IP): 192.168.100.10, (Subnet Mask): 255.255.255.0. The diagnostics pages are at: 192.168.100.1/moreinfo.html (signal levels), and 192.168.100.1/diagnostics.html (status). Note: the PC needs to be connected directly to the modem, and cannot run thru a router. I have successfully used these settings for the DCM 225, 235 and 245 models.

dw2, I'm connected directly to the internet, no router. I do not know how to set up a temp.static i.p. address or subnet mask. If you know a site where I can learn how to do this I will go there and read about it. If not I'm afraid I'm at a disadvantage.
Thanks all.
