Info on SB4200 modem firmware bug.

See the following links for more info on this firmware (version: SB4200-0.4.4.0-SCM06-NOSH) problem:

1. »www.securitytracker.com/alerts/2···519.html
2. »online.securityfocus.com/archive···-11-07/1
3. »groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=···f7084eb4. 0211292234.159dd055%2540posting.google.com
4. »charterpipelinentx.net/sb4200fir···blem.htm

I can confirm the latest firmware (version 4.4.2 - released, but not approved) does fix the problem, but it is not being distributed by Adelphia (or the majority of other cable modem providers) yet.

See »192.168.100.1/mainhelp.html on your Motorola modem to find the firmware version. Other models of Motorola modems (2100, 3100, 4100, 4101, 4220) don't seem to be affected by this specific problem.

Note: You can't get the firmware update from Motorola as it is distributed to cable providers only.

Personal note: Of the hundreds of these modems I know are installed in my area, I haven't heard from customers or other techs about seeing this problem directly. I was (and still am, with upgraded firmware) using this modem and never had a problem with it during normal, everyday use. I only had a problem when I directly tried to duplicate the firmware bug(using information from the links above).

[update]Reading through the pages I've found, some people using that particular modem seem to indicate it only locks up connections using the ethernet port only. USB connections may not be affected, but this is unconfirmed (at least by me).

[Update 2] A quick way to see if your affected by this bug is to surf a few pages at the website: »www.vandale.nl (It is a Dutch website. Just randomly click links and the problem should occur).

The modem will stay sync'd but you won't be able to access the internet at all, due to the modem locking up. Power cycling the modem is the only way to restore the connection.

I've got the modem. But I haven't tried it yet.

I'm still waiting for the Adelphia folks to come over and set up my internet.

Motorola SB4200
Software Version: SB4200-0.4.4.0-SCM06-NOSH

I have to recycle the modem on occasion to get my connection back.

EDIT: Modem is connected via ethernet with my DLink DFE-530TX+ NIC.

I never have to power cycle it, the connection just dies. I'll post a trace when it happens. My connection is well within spec. (SB4100)

Your affected by a different problem, not the 4200 firmware bug. So it may be what Tac is looking for. He didn't specify so I'm not sure.

Ashburn, VA (and surrounding areas) has another issue which your seeing, which isn't related to the firmware bug since it affects all modems, not just the 4200.

The majority of people complaining of connection stability
in here are people in the Northern Virginia area. I just wanted to make sure if this topic has anything to do with NOVA disconnects, that I spoke up as I obviously do not have a Motorola Cable Modem.
I do not want to see the stability problem dismissed as being a firmware bug in a modem I don't use.
Thanks

NO nothing like that there are some looking into that problem. This is for more than just Va and the SB4200 is all over. you can post traces during the drop connection and after to see the difference. More than welcome to post

I have the 4200 connected with ethernet, and have been experiencing the intermittent connection drops, and I am in the Northern Virginia area, near Ashburn. When my connection drops, I can usually recover it by manually releasing, then renewing my IP lease.
