 | [Streamyx] ADSL Modem compatability Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone knows if the D-Link DSL-300I or D-link DSL-300G ADSL modems would work with Streamyx?

XEQtorWanna See My 8 Boobies? join:2003-02-20 52100 | Went to query DLink Msian disti yesterday. Wanted the DL300. Said go get the 4-port router with built-in ADSL modem instead. Cost the same. Currently no stock. Stock arriving 2nd wk March. Will be getting the 4-port USB router/modem to test these few days. Buying 3 units.
Today, another friend tole me DLink modem can hang. Not disconnect but hang. Used to play with DLinks and freezing is always one of its undocumented feature.
First, horror stories abt Aztech. Then Telekom has own horror stories abt SMC. Now, this... Sigh!
I'll swear by Hyundai (which uses the TI chipset). If only I can get a Msian disti...
Will have more info on DLink once I've played with it.

 | reply to hardwarenut I'm currently using a Dlink DSL-200I USB modem, just connected last night.
So far so good. But I'm thinking of getting a Ethernet based modem.
XEQtor, Is the Aztech ADSL Ethernet Bridge DSL 900E(B)2 really no good? I was told Telekom now bundles the Hyundai Hase-220 modem. Is that a better choice?
Thanks. |

 | Has anyone try CNet ADSL Router with build in Modem? Model CNAD804? How about Prolink Hurricane 8800P? |

XEQtorWanna See My 8 Boobies? join:2003-02-20 52100 | reply to dodge0 Long story for me. Wanted to buy 3 modems. Already got a HASE-220 for my own. Originally targetted an Aztech model, but hearing some horror stories here and fr Telekom contractors, decided to target SMC. Heard more horror stories abt SMC (cant hold line effectively). So went looking for another. Meanwhile bought a Linksys firewall router for my HASE-220. That one kick ass so naturally went looking for Linksys modems. They dont have one in Msia. Finally went to DLink. Wanted the DI300 modem only. Was told to go for the 4-port router with modem - same price. And the price was almost half Low Yat.
Then, heard horror story fr a techie friend who uses a DLink modem. Said connection problems and Telekom guys came and showed him Telekom side all honky dorry so must be the DLink. Said DLink hangs (whatever that means).
As for DLink, I got to 'try before you buy'. Supposed to go today to pick it up but too bz. Anyways, the 4-port ether with modem will arrive Spore Customs around Mar 7. Hit Msia 3 days later. Last shipment of 500 units all sold out. The one I got to try have same modem module but 4-port USB version.
If I can get any model today, I will ONLY settle for the Hyundai HASE-220. Dont be fooled by its Korean brand. It uses the Texas Instruments chipset and that's where it'll stand out. When the PPPoE problem hit yesterday, had to dismantle my home network to pin-point the fault. Had a chance to tinker with the innards of the HASE. Feature wise is v rich. Can do bridge, router, IPoA & PPPoA right off the box. Factory default settings of HASE (esp DSLAM vendor setting) fits Steamyx like a glove. What more can you want? Streamx line/ATM problem? Just go back to factory defaults! Perhaps that's why it is so 'problem free'. Unpack the box, stick it in, turn on power, patch the PVC link at the exchange and you're on...
Furthermore, under 384/128k speeds no one should have to do any tinkering to improve line quality. HASE said can do 8/1M. Perhaps higher speeds may throw up issues, I dunno.
A close relative is using an Alcatel model. Uses HASE settings to get the Alcatel going for Streamyx.
Dodge, unless it dont cost you money to change models, I'll say stick with what you've got. I'll be very interested to know how well you're doing with yr DLink.
Personally (and professionally), I'll want to stay away from USB models for the time being. Reason being the RJ-45 standards are so well established that getting a 10/100TX (full duplex) ether card costs a pittance. There're so many established and cheap peripherals needing RJ-45 connections. USB versions still have a premium over RJ-45 versions. And if support is only USB 1.1 (not USB 2.0) you're not getting much in terms of interconnection possibilities.
Case in point. When Telekom guy came, he jabbed the HASE into my PC's ether. When he left, I went out to get a firewall router switch and re-jab everything. VPN for office use. Next, I'll want to jab in a WiFi Access Point into the router (also RJ-45) so that I can surf while sitting on the can. Well, if I add a WiFi booster, my neighbors could...
The only advantage I see abt USB is it's plug and play caps. But if you plug, install driver and then still have to tweak, what's the diff with the ether version? Have you ever had to tweaking yr ether card? You may still want to tweak yr modem in both cases.
So, ether or USB, I guess it depends on how you want to set things up - now and in the future. My USB is still for my camera, printer and scanner.
Pls dont flame me for my current convictions. XEQtor. |

| reply to hardwarenut Totally agree with you. USB works fine but not in all cases. If your planning to do a small home network or Wifi(ing) your neigbourhood it will be a lot more cheaper and easier to find Ethernet Hardware. USB also has known to be very problematic, if your getting Disconnected often it might be your USB modem that is causing it. Even tho this arguement could lead us to a Pentium vs Athlon or a PS2 vs Xbox. It all depends on how your going to use your DSL. -- Give peace a Chance |

 | reply to XEQtor XEQtor,
Thank you for your modem analysis. I have been using the Dlink for 2 days now, and I have some issues and am not sure if they are modem related.
First, a little bit of background. My line quality does somewhat suck. Using dial-up to Jaring, I can only connect at a max of 31.2kbps.
With this Dlink USB modem, upon connection I sometimes cannot surf as I can't reach the DNS servers. So I have to disconnect and reconnect again. I'm using an ASUS TUSL2-C with a Intel 815EP chipset, so I don't think I have any USB issues. Hence I'm not sure if that's to do with this modem or my bad line.
My friend who uses the same Dlink modem says he tried an Aztech Ethernet modem (900EB?) and said it was much better in terms of data throughput and line stability (on dial-up he gets about 50kbps though).
So since you've said that the Hyundai rocks, I'll probably go shop around for that. How much does it cost?
Also, I've been hearing stories that some streamyx users even when capped at 384kbps can uncap and surf at higher speeds by changing the modulation mode at the modem and some settings. Have you heard of anything like that? |

XEQtorWanna See My 8 Boobies? join:2003-02-20 52100 | Hi dodge,
Thanx for the DLink feedback. These days, surfing speeds are bad - 'TMNET fighting with outside world'. So, it's no point cracking yr head over something which is beyond us. I'd say, hold on and perhaps this Tue, things would be better? Then, yr test wld be more accurate. Now, a bit of my story pre-streamyx so that you can compare.
Jaring dial-up was 49333bps consistent, line holding 72hrs+. D/L volume was 20MB/hr. Then, tree branches got in the way fr my line to the telegraph pole. Line speeds dropped to 33.6kbps (my Courier does ASL) but never climb back up. Connection then became 45kbps but quickly dropped after 15mins. Did an off-hook (ATOH command) listened to the speaker - crackling noise on the line, kettle boiling ssssh sound fr time to time. Think my main line & Internet line outside was crossed and 'shorting' away. Complained to telekom, man came, was sleeping, so line did not get fix.
Then came Streamyx installation that same afternoon. B/w then was 25 KB poor to 40+KB good. Two days ago, had a chance to tickle my Hyundai HASE. Found my S/N ratio to be only around 38dB - which I think is baad. There are 2 other signalling values that are also poor (forgot what). End my story.
You can see that I dont have a good line too and the crackling line noise has yet to be fixed. ADSL modems use a different kind of signalling technology (digital) and so is 'a leetle bit immune' to such things. Furthermore, consider this: ADSL modem is supposed to drive 8Mbps over a good phone line but we're only asking the modem to do 0.384Mbps! It's like asking a 56k V.90 modem to do 2400bps! What kind of line quality would prevent it? Even your 56k modem can get higher than 2400bps. So, my argument is that an 8Mbps modem can easily do 384kbps, no sweat. Yeah, we may need to get the line fixed if we want to subscribe to an 8Mbps Streamyx package.
I have only seen the HASE (RTFM), so dont know how to see the Dlink. But you should be able to RTFM and go inside and 'talk' to the modem. It shd be able to tell you yr settings and the ATM PVC readings and the DSL link stats will tell you that you're capped to 384dn/128up. Then, error cells (uncorrected blocks), etc. Mine showed zero errors (as expected for such 'low' link speeds). Okay, I've only tickled my HASE for only a few hrs, so do not know too much.
As for DNS, I'm using the default given by Streamyx. Some ppl said they're slow. Try this: try first time, hope to fail if it's some obscure site. Wait 1 min, try again. A slow DNS server will need quite awhile to go ask papa, mama, etc for the addy of yr site. But once it has yr site's addy, it shd give it to you the next time you try. Also, yr browser will 'remember' this for subsequent browsing within, say, the next 5 mins. But if you consistently cannot go to the same site despite waiting and retrying, then perhaps both yr DNS servers are down. I usually get a DNS timeout immediately after a PPPoE connection - the first time I access the site. After that, no probs. Never had both my DNS (default) to fail on me.
Well, someone suggest to use other Streamyx name servers, some even suggest someone elses DNS server. I remain silent on these except to add the following:
---------------------------------------------- Query: Name Server (NS):streamyx.com. Authoritative Answer streamyx.com NS dns1.jati.net.my streamyx.com NS dns2.jati.net.my streamyx.com NS dns1.jati.net.my streamyx.com NS dns2.jati.net.my dns1.jati.net.my A 202.188.245.2 dns2.jati.net.my A 202.188.245.3 Complete: streamyx.com.
Query: Name Server (NS):tm.net.my. Authoritative Answer tm.net.my NS ns2.tm.net.my tm.net.my NS ns3.tm.net.my tm.net.my NS ns1.tm.net.my ns2.tm.net.my A 202.188.1.5 ns3.tm.net.my A 202.188.0.133 ns1.tm.net.my A 202.188.0.132 Complete: tm.net.my. ----------------------------------------------
What I meant when I'd like to know how bad the modem is, is that does it hang (refuses to work) w/o any apparent reason? Does the line disconnect for no apparent reason? My HASE holds a PPPoE connection for hrs if not days (I'm still using a PPPoE connection fr 2am last night). Yeah, today I got like abt 100 d/l timeouts (on 1.3GB xfers).
As for raising the caps, short answer: No. Look, yr modem does not come with caps. It's the ATM PVC/DSLAM on the exchange that does the cap. Me thinks something will have to be done at the exchange to raise the caps, such as subscribing to a higher Streamyx package.
As for the Hyundai, I'm still looking for the local disti. I dont know the price but comparing the price of Hyundai cars vs other similar non-Korean cars, it shouldnt be too different (cant compare a Taiwanese car). :-)
So, before you consider yr DLink 'no good', pls hang on until at least TMNET settles it's problem these next few days.
Looks like my time is running out. Only have 1 choice so far: DLink. If I go test that model out and it works, I'll have to commit 2 units when the stock comes... :-) And my friend is climbing on my back to set up his Streamyx pronto. :-)
Caveat: I'm v green on this ADSL sheet. Dont just believe everything in this post (unless I said I've tried them). My arguments are mine and I stand corrected. Anyone can feel free to correct this.
Be patient, XEQtor. |

 | XEQtor, If you can find the vendor for the Hyundai modem please contact me also.I have actually talked to the Malaysian sole distributor but they are reluctant to sell it to me..The Hyundai distributor in Malaysia is Comintel Berhad which is located in Bandar Sunway. Not friendly though...Just PM me on DSLR if you do. |

 | reply to hardwarenut How about the Prolink,Planet and Cnet brands?I am also planning to get a new ethernet based ADSL modem but just couldn't make up my mind. |

 | reply to XEQtor XEQtor,
{Dlink USB line quality} Still a new streamyx user (4 days old!), Dlink and line quality is surprisingly ok. It lasted for 14 hours before I disconnected it. Hence again, so far so good!
{RTFM'ing} Good for you. But I'm still searching high and low for the DSL-200I datasheets. The datasheet on Dlink's website is marketing talk. This model has the extra "I" and I'm not sure what it's for. Dlink's site hasn't been too helpful. So far, the only review I found for the DSL-200 (no "I") is »www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware/re···l200.asp
In the review, I see screenies of the Config tool which I don't find with mine. Mine ships with a "DSLMon" software which shows your Download/Upload speeds, and a "DSLTest" utility...that's it, no other tweaking utils.
I'm thinking of uninstalling the current drivers and using the DSL-200's. Maybe I'll try that tonight.
{DNS} I've tried the default Streamyx DNS servers, and I've switched to Jaring's as it's noticeably faster.
I sure hope the talk about TMnet servers having probs is true. When downloading stuff from some US servers, I get dial-up like speeds (2-3kb/s), and it sometimes stops/stalls when downloading. Thank gosh for download accelerators!
Let me know if you want me to do any sorts of "tests" for you on my Dlink. I've ran the bandwidth test at our fav ISP's (uggh) webpage and it reports 30-35kbytes/s, so I think it's quite decent.
So no chance in getting your Hyundai locally. Hmm...mind telling me what's so bad about the Aztech 900EB? |

 | HELP i bought a d-link dsl-200i modem too and i don't know how to set it up to connect to streamyx... if i knew more abt modems at dat time i woulda got the hyundai instead >. help dodge how did you configure your modem? does the default driver settings work? |

 | reply to dodge0 Hie Dodge...
You mentioned using Jaring's DNS server (which is noticeably faster according to you)instead of TMNet's. Is this legal and if so, can you please tell me the DNS for Jaring servers? i'm desperate to get a moderate quality of speed...thanks a lot.. |
|
 | reply to Re6ret9 I guess u need to change the bundle default driver as it won't work(you won't be able to install the PPPOE driver). Bought mine at Techdos in Mid-valley -- called them after 3 days of sleepless night trying configuring it to work, luckily the had the updated driver given by their local distributor. note: The DSL-200 driver won't work with Win XP. |

| reply to hardwarenut Using a different Gateway"DNS" might improve your data Routing so you get better latency surfing (maybe to minimal to even notice). Maybe TMnet should try setting up a proxy server till they get a better deal with a new carrier. -- Give peace a Chance |

 | reply to hardwarenut Aiyo, my turn to have multiple answers...
Re6ret, I didn't do much to configure my DSL-200I. I ran "SETUP.EXE" and everything auto-configured by itself, and it told me to reboot my PC. When installing the drivers, do not plug in the modem into your USB port yet! Do so only after the reboot (the installation guide tells you this), and a dial-up networking shortcut pointing to the modem was then created on me desktop. After that you need to enter the DNS servers, and you're set. I had to call TMnet to activate my streamyx account as well.
Dooofus, Maybe it's just me but I did find the Jaring DNS servers a little faster compared to TMnet's. Primary DNS I'm using = 161.142.227.17 (Jaring's), and the sec DNS is still TMnet's.
Lepton, Did the updated drivers include any sort of config/tweak tool besides DSLMon/DSLtest? Please say yes! And if yes, can I trouble you to send it to me?
Thanks! |
