Dell TrueMobile 1150 Firmware v8.72 Updater

Dell TrueMobile 1150 Client cards (PCMCIA and mini-PC) are OEM Lucent/Agere/Proxim Orinoco cards. However, Dell versions of these cards are using much older version of their Orinoco cousins.

Moreover, Orinoco firmware cannot be used on Dell because Driver/Client Utility/Firmware Updater usually check the vendor and model before.

Dell Recently updated the driver to 7.44 and utility package to 2.58 (Look for updates R41299/46012 and R41301/R43778 packages) However, Dell firmware is still at 6.xx level.

A year ago someone at Dell forums found a way to hack the firmware update package for version 8.10 to work on Dell. Recently Dell has changed the forum names but I found the link again.

[Update (2/19/03): The 8.10 firmware updater referenced below does not work with PCMCIA card. There is a fixed 8.10 version later in the thread]

»delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforu···.id=2194

In this thread there is a link to patched firmware updater to upgrade to version 8.10.

»www.loodi.com/TrueMobile1150_v810.zip

In the same spirit described in Dell forum, there is now an unofficial firmware updater for latest Orinoco firmware 8.72.

»/r0/download/2···v872.zip

[Update (2/19/03): This zip file now contains 2 versions. One for PCMCIA card and one for mini-PCI card]

Please note again that 8.10 and 8.72 are NOT supported by Dell or Orinoco. Use them at your own risk.

I've updated my own Dell Latitude C600's TrueMobile 1150 mini-PCI card to v8.10 and v8.72 on Windows 2000 with Dell Drivers (7.44) and Utility (2.58).

Apparently, from Dell thread some people were lucky with Dell's Drivers while others needed to load Orinoco drivers before and some were not successful at all.

[Update (2/19/03): Updated the 8.72 zip file to have independent firmware update files for PCMCIA and MINI-PCI versions. This time both PCMCIA and MINI-PCI are verified to be recognized by the updater. The original 8.10 referenced in Dell thread also had the same issues. An updated 8.10 that has independent PCMCIA and MINI-PCI versions is linked later in the thread]

Please note that the driver and firmware package at Agere website is multi-branded but it includes firmware (v8.42) that is older than the firmware updater here (v8.72)

»www.agere.com/support/drivers

You can however, use v2.90 of the Utility and v7.62 of the driver with Dell. Latest Orinoco driver (7.64) and utility (2.90) is again OEM locked.

In any case, Agere drivers and the 8.72 firmware posted here is the latest available for Dell TrueMobile users.

Thanks!

I just loaded and so far so good. A week or two ago I loaded Agere multibranded drivers, client manager and firmware. Now I've got the 8.72 firmware.

Latitude C600 running WinXP with miniPCI wireless card.

So far no dice here all I get is "no wireless card driver found" even after trying about half a dozen different drivers. Windows XP, Dell TrueMobile 1150 PCMCIA. IF anyon figures it out let me know.

Last year I couldn't get the 8.10 firmware on my 1150 PCMCIA (no problems with miniPCI). I even hacked the firmware updater myself to ensure the correct string for the PCMCIA card was in the file. My guess is that the same problem exists with this hacked firmware updater.

Today I have my 1150 PCMCIA card in a RG-1000 and it works great. The RG firmware updater recognizes the 1150 PCMCIA card and updates the firmware. Gave the Orinoco Silver card to my dad along with a spare RG-1000 (he has the "all Silver" setup).

No help if you don't have an Orinoco AP, but at least that should confirm someone else had problems with 1150 PCMCIA and the hacked firmware updater.

Please re-download 8.72 again. I think I discovered the issue with PCMCIA cards not being detected in 8.10 and original 8.72 downloaded here. If someone needs I can fix 8.10 as well to work with PCMCIA card.

The following version of 8.10 should work with PCMCIA card should someone needs to downgrade from 8.72...

»/r0/download/2···v810.zip

[Update (2/19/03): Updated the zip file to have independent firmware updaters for PCMCIA and MINI-PCI cards. Earlier firmware updater did not work with PCMCIA card]

What's the advantage to the new firmware? (My philosophy is the safest flash is no flash).

Thanks

Try Dell drivers. I am using Dell drivers here. Beyond that I have Windows 2000. You are trying to do this on XP I think.

I think it has to be an xp problem I have tried everything else, I've tried just about every 7.x driver I can get my hand on etc. No 2k machines with pcmcia slots at the moment (in 2 weeks after I move I will have a pcmcia slot in my pc but thats another story)

I dunno. Same experience that I had last year with 8.10 firmware updater and 1150 PCMCIA card under Win2k. This card just doesn't want to be updated! If it wasn't for rebuilding my server I'd take apart my RG-1000 and try it. No joy for the Dell PCMCIA card unless you put it into an Orinoco/Proxim AP (or use Agere multibrand updater/drivers/client).

Sorry guys. I cannot help much more on PCMCIA since I only use the mini-PCI one.

Theoretically, the PCMCIA update should work with the patch but probably firmware updater is also checking some other stuff beyond PnP ID that was fixed to get it working with miniPCI.

One last shot... Can you tell me the following values from your registry on your system (when using Dell Drivers)

Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE 10318}

Look at each subkey under this. Please tell me the "ComponentId" and "MatchingDeviceID" values when "DriverDesc" or "VendorDescription" values are "TrueMobile 1150 PC Card".

For example it should look something like (from my mini-PCI)

ComponentID: pcmcia\dell-truemobile_1150_series_pc_card-c043
MatchingDeviceID: pcmcia\dell-truemobile_1150_series_pc_card-c043

There may be multiple ones. So scan through all subkeys.

Also Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002 BE10318}

Look at {each subkey}\Connection under this. Please tell me the "PnPInstanceID" when Name is "TrueMobile".

It should be something like (this one is for mini-PCI):

PCMCIA\DELL-TRUEMOBILE_1150_SERIES_PC_CARD-C043\1

Again, there may be multiple ones. Please scan through other subkeys.

Also, can you attach the version screen snaphot for your dell PCMCIA card as well from the client utility.

For some reason the forum posting inserts space before 10318. Please remove spaces embedded in the registry key path between { and }

If you have downloaded 8.72 and 8.10 firmware updaters from this thread please re-download them again!

There are now 2 independent firmware updaters in the linked ZIP archives (TM1150_V872.ZIP and TM1150_V810.ZIP).

The one that is named TM1150_PCMCIA_*.EXE updates the PCMCIA card and the other named TM1150_MINIPCI_*.EXE updates the MINI-PCI card.

Pls. post here if you have been successful.

Yeah thanks DrTCP! I appreciate the time you took to IM me about fixing it up for my other rebranded cards - and now I have been able to make it work on my IBM Wireless card and my Toshiba mini-pci card!!

Thanks again DrTCP!
