Capping Discussion Here Only - Part 2

The other one was getting too long, so here's a new thread.

I've created this thread and made it sticky so it always stays on top.

ALL cap discussions from here on out will be contained in this one thread.

If you want to know why you were capped, here.
If you want to know how to not get capped, here.
If you want to complain about OOL and how horrible they are, here.
If you want to defend the caps, here.

If you want to discuss this new policy, not here. Send me an IM and I'll be happy to discuss it.

I promise you I am not trying to stifle discussion of the subject (I think that's pretty clear from my actions to date). I am just trying to restore sanity to this forum by keeping this all in one place, so it doesn't overtake everything else.

Please post everything related to the new OOL capping procedure in this thread.

Thank you.
Lex

Well, re-reading over a few pages of part I, I would like to make a suggestion to those who have problems getting uncapped: Trade in your modem every time they do it. Don't call them, let them call you.

Here is a link to the crap they told me. »So, they want ME to benchmark it???

He did offer to uncap me but by that time, I already had a replacement modem. Maybe if they get a few hundred modems exchanged each week they will get the idea. BTW, dont bring em back the boxes, why make it easy for them to re-shelve them.

Someone posted this link in here at the end of the last HUGE capping thread:

It is for a petition about capping on OOL.. At the time of this posting, there were only 74 votes.. Time to bump that up I think.

It looks like they cap your download speed too. I saw a lot of 'before and after' speed tests and most users went from 8Mbps to 4-5Mbps.

no, they only cap the UL but somehow this does reduce your DL, Instead of 1,000,000 bps Upstream and 10,000,000 bps Downstream, you get 150,000 upstream and 10,000,000 bps downstream.

Hey, dummy (Midak).....how often do you think they're going to exchange your modem???

Your brand of thinking is what costs everyone. Next time you show up to exchange a modem they should bend you over and insert it where the sun don't shine. Freakin' moron!

Costs everyone? Has your service suffered? Can you prove it? I thought as much.

On second thoughts, I won't respond to an anonymous (moron) poster on these boards, but more than happy to discuss with him during my next visit to the wiz.

back on topic, I sent that same file to that same person without being capped. So, sending another one twice as big at same speeds to same user. This time it is a load of high res photos, about 1.4GB's worth (all sports shots) same speed. Won't find out until morning if I was capped and if I need to drop by the wiz again for another free trade in. Realized earlier that this will only be convenient until CV flushes the Wiz down the toilet like everything else they touch.

I was recently a victim of OOL. After a few days of having sluggish connection, I called up OOL and they told me that I might be capped due to running a server. Anyways you probably have all dealt with this but the rep that was suppose to remove the cap was such a female dog (won't go into details). I asked her whats the limit on the bandwithe for uploading. And she told me that if you upload 100 kb above for hours then you'll get capped. I then asked her that if i upload under 100 will i get capped and she said you'll still get banned if the uploading activity goes on for hours.

Now they said that the reason why they cap you is because under the TOS you're not suppose to run a server. But if you use AIM or icq to send stuff are u still considered running a server? If its not considered running a server then how come my rep told me that high activity of upload will get me capped again? I think OOL is bunch of BS. I pay $50 a month for the connection and i can't even use it to the fullest potential. They said that i'm decreasing the threshold, but i think FIber opt can handle lotsa traffic. Plus i've never noticed any lag b4 they started capping people.

caphappy you're the only thats stupid. Why do you allow cablevision to restrict you from what you can do with your conection. Afterall $40 with cabletv or $50 w/o is a hefty price to pay. In asia they give you T3 speed for half of the price that we pay here in america. This ain't no joke, i just went back to taiwan during summer of '02.

holy shit are you serious? Are you using the business plan or the regular home service. I usually download 500KB from like download.com and upload at 115KB.

Heads up.

Pretty soon, CV is going to cap how much TV you can watch in one sitting. If you watch more than two hours of TV, they will throttle you back to black and white basic cable because you are draining the power from their lines which degrades everyone else's service.

because the agreement between cablevision and their customers always has stated that bandwidtdh use is decided in OOL'S SOLE DISCRETION so maybe he understands that he does not control what OOL decides.

LOL. you really dont have any idea what service costs do you? most cable ISP's charge more than OOL for lesser speeds. many DSL providers charge more money for lesser speed. in fact about the only way you can touch OOL's speeds and throughput capacity is to pay at least twice what OOL costs and only if you are lucky enough to be close enough to a switching station to get a high speed DSL connection.

uhhhh no...
Japanese Government statistics

59.5 million people accessing the Internet using cellular phones (e.g. e-mail) (this number is growing by 1.1 milion a month)

over 5.6 million ADSL users (growing by nearly 528,000 per month)

over 1.9 million CATV users (growing by about 53,000 a month)

and a little over 206,000 FTTH (optical Fiber To The Home) users (growing by about 33,900 a month)

wow a whopping two hundred thousand customers in a country of billions. sounds like it is not to common to find that T3 speed connection. and once you do find a provider that offeres T-3 speeds you are going to pay from $40 to $60 per month for it and that sounds like a far cry fromhalf the price of my $30 cable connection.

cable and DSL providers in asia are able to offer OOL like speed caps and often at dirt cheap rates. HOWEVER just because the ISP calls it an 8Mb/s connection does not in any way mean the connection actually does 8Mb. the reality is asias ISP's rarely come close to supplying what their advertised speed is and an 8 Mb advertised connection will actually run around 4 to 5 Mb/s.

ever consider going back again and staying there since you think so much more of them than the united states. of course once you are LIVING there you might see the forest through the trees and decide its not worth a million dollars a year to live in a one bedroom apartment in a country so strife with overcrowding just so you can get a connection that advertises twice the speed you actually get so you can think you are paying less for internet service.

No, what they probably will do is get rid of the 9 day grace period, and insist everyone register their modem before they are allowed online. You are dealing with security personnel at a major corporation and they will eventually make sure that you get the exact same configuration file that caps you with the new modems.

So if you don't think your actions will have an effect, guess what, they will. Whether it be making everyone register their modem, so all new users lose or their canceling your service and you losing your service or some other action in between .

»So, they want ME to benchmark it???

Anyways, I didn't get capped this time even though I sent more data, full speed, for even more hours on end to the same OOL user. This time it was a total of 2.04GB So, capping is random, it is based on how much you UL over a week/month or you get a grace period after being capped the first time (doubt that part.)

The only two things that were different this time was my modem type (3com instead of motorola) and I sent about 4 times the amount of data than I did when I got capped. Both times I started around midnight.

Hmm Midak, that makes no sense. Where is the logic behind it? You start your upload at the same time and on the same location (node),you upload more than twice the data you did before when getting capped.
I just dont get it...
