AIM Beta fixes file send/direct connect issues

AOL has released their latest beta, this one, believe it or not actually allows you to make a direct connection with buddies when you are both behind a router.

I don't believe it works using UPnP, as I saw no traces of it in my router's UPnP forwarding.

This worked with two Linksys routers.

wow, this sounds a great news to me. I just downloaded it and would test it later. I will post the result.

I have not been able to make it work with my initial tests. I have UPnP disabled on both routers. Did you by chance change the default preferences in AIM for the firewall to something other than "Incoming, outgoing, and AOL proxy server"?

And to anyone else who is reading this and tests the software. If you can get it to work, what exactly is the setup of your routers? What OS is each computer using? The more details the better.

Both users MUST be using the same version of AIM or it won't work.

My friend and I both use Windows XP with service pack 1. He uses the Linksys BEFSR41 and I was using the BEFSR11 with the latest firmware in both routers. I also go thru a four port switch. We both also have Comcast/AT&T Highspeed Internet, he's in Florida and I am in Connecticut.

Don't know what other information I could toss in to this.

Edit: Oh, I left it on the default "firewall" settings in the preferences of AIM. Forgot to mention that!

Took AOL long enough to fix this problem.

Just downloaded and tested it out with 1 person. We're both behind NAT routers which never would have worked before and we could send files and direct connect without issue.

Seems like the "fix" is working well!

Have you tweaked your OOL connection?

I too just installed this new beta and it seems to be working well between two routers. All features are working great.

Is anyone having good luck with this new aim version using netgear's mr814 router? I'm trying to connect with a friend, and im' using that one, and she's on a linksys but neither of us have updated aim yet. I just wanted to be sure it would work before we do, so if anyone is already using this router and having success, please let me know.

thanks!

If you're not both using the new beta of AIM, and you're both behind routers, the odds are almost 100% that it won't work. Both update and the odds seem to be that it will work.

What's strange in my case though is that I've read where it's been said to work fine as long as at least one person isn't using a router...yet I've been unable to connect with anyone ever since hooking up the computer to a router, and I know not everyone I was trying to connect with is using a router.

Finally AOL listen.. Finally able to transfer using AIM, but it doesn't always work. Didn't even have to open any port in the router.

once the beta first came out , the file send and d/c had worked w/out any or probs delays of such. just recently it had stopped working, its not just mine my friends are also having trouble connecting, since it had worked before, anyone else experiencing problems? what are the ports anyway to forward this junk to work all the time?

I'm having the same problems with a friend of mine....we were connecting fine then last night I noticed it wouldn't work, but the night before I was able to connect with someone else, but I'm not sure if they were using a router or not, so it may have worked anyway in their case. Are you still able to connect to people without a router? Cause even the older version worked that way supposedly...the beta was only needed if both people were using a router.
Trillian isn't working either, nor is that netmeeting method someone mentioned before.

I believe that AOL has changed something, maybe for the next beta version?
