Using a Toshiba cable modem, is it best to use the USB connection or the Ethernet connection? Does one connection perform better than the other?
Thanks,

| reply to tc27407 USB is not a dedicated piece of networking hardware. It can also put more stress on your processor, making the computer handle work that the NIC normally does.
USB 2 can support 12MB/s of data transfer. That's shared between all USB devices on the controller... your digital camera... scanner... joystick or gamepad... You don't want your connection to burp just because you've loaded up a webcam, do ya? It would kind of defeat the point of a webcamp...
If you have the option, I strongly suggest NIC over USB, for the reasons I mentioned.
BTW: If you are connected via DHCP and don't have a static address... You will ALWAYS get a different IP address when using different hardware. NIC is different hardware from USB. |

USB 2 is 480Mbps, usb 1.0 and 1.1 are 12Mbps. regardless of that, your points are correct and i agree with all of them. -- disclaimer: my opinions are my own, my employer is not responsible. |
