BEFSR41 v2 Constantly needs resetting

Hello, all.
Had the Linksys BEFSR41 since about November of the previous year. After about a month of using a static IP (which worked wonderful), one day I try accessing the internet, when NOTHING LOADED AT ALL! I had not changed anything either. Did a direct modem connect to PC, was fine, so router was/IS obviously at fault ever since beginning of February.

Now when I want to use the internet, I have to manually do a lite reset on the router EVERY time. This is driving me nuts. So I contacted Linksys' e-mail support. This is their reply:

quote:
"Kindly try to assign values in the MTU settings. This can be found in the router's Filters Page »192.168.1.1/Filters.htm[?]. This is done when you're having problems in web browsing, downloading, email sending/receiving, and FTP. Try to assign values such as 1382 or 1400 or 1450 or 1492 and see which has the most stable connection."
Before I attempt this, does/did anyone have similar problems and get it resolved? What are these "filtered" port #'s? What exactly are they and what do they do?? I don't want to mess up my router any more than it currently is.

Rocky, these values are not ports, go here: »192.168.1.1/Filters.htm , scroll down the page and the very last thing is where you set one of these values. You have a choice of "Disable" or "Enable" the MTU setting, what they want you to do is "Enable" and enter one of those values to see if it helps with your problem, don't forget to "Apply" at the bottom of the page.

How do you find out if your router is version 1 or 2?

TexasGuy, look on the bottom of the unit. How long ago did you buy it?

Hi sbkansans,
thanks for the clarifying the issue. I was about to enter in those #'s under Filtered Private Port Range if it wasn't for you, lol!

OK, I entered the first value the tech support person suggested, which was 1382. Of course, I won't be able to tell if this worked or not 'til probably tomorrow, seeing as how the problem persists once a day. I'll get back to you, of course, letting you know what happens.

Thanks.

UPDATE

I tried 1382. And later on, when I was on AOL and surfed the 'net from there, I was unable to load any webpage documents. So I disabled that.

I then tried 1400, the next in the series of #'s provided to me by Linksys' tech support. Note that this was done last night before I shutdown. Today, I boot up, and am able to access the router's utilities page (192.1....), yet was unable to access the internet. So I did a lite reset and all loaded....
..which leads me back to my MAIN problem: that I constantly have to do a lite reset EVERY FREAKING time I start the computer and modem.

Next, I'll attempt MTU size 1450, then 1492 if that doesn't work (which I don't think will). So if this doesn't work, what else need I do? I already did one hard reset previously, and that didn't help!! I am using firmware v1.43 am connected through the router via "Obtain IP automatically"-type connection (no longer using a static). The rest of the settings in my router are default w/ the exception of Forwarding and Triggering ports I have open for internet app's and games. Here are the rest of my spec's to provide a better understanding of my PC:

AMD Athlon 1.3GHz,
Linksys LNE 100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter card,
256MB RAM,
Windows 98SE

Hi Rocky, you have "Obtain IP automatically"??, How do you connect to the internet? (who is your ISP)Do you use any kind of log-on (PPPOE) software? If you do require to "log-on" to the internet then "Obtain IP automatically" is not for you.

Blasted tech support clowns.. that quote you posted look familiar.. lol they cut and paste the same thing to me when I sent them my problems.

Sent in a responce saying MTU was already set.. this is what they sent

"Kindly double check your cables. Make it sure that your cables are working properly. Try switching ports if possible."

maybe they will copy and paste that one to you next.. if so reading this may save you 3 days waiting for a responce from them.

This is exactly the BS that will force me never to buy a Linksys product again

Hey again sbkansas,
ISP = Comcast cable (~150KBps down, 12KBps up), so no log ons, just always on (in the Philadelphia region to be more precise).
And as I've stated, most of my router settings are defaulted, so I don't use anything other than the router.

-UPDATE-
Just as predicted MTU size # 1450 did absolutely NOTHING. Upon booting up, w/ RCA cable modem ON, nothing loaded. So, was once again forced to do a lite reset.

LMAO Baud! Yeah, I had a feeling that message was recycled over n' over n' over again.

So guys, what's next for me?! Is the router bad? I mean, like said, I have done next to nothing in physically moving or doing anything software-wise w/ the router.

Rocky, so you are DHCP, this should help troubleshoot. MTU under normal conditions should be 1500, the Linksys router defaults to 1500 if you disable the MTU setting on the filters page, but I suggest "enable with 1500 value" this keeps the router and NIC from chatting so much. I'm thinking (maybe) a flash is in order with the latest version for that router (ver. 1.44.2).

It's worth a try because I think the latest version seems to be very stable.

BTW, I agree with Baud about the Linksys reply, but I'm so use to "form type" replies from both hardware and software companies all I can do is ignore it.

Heh, Glad to see I'm not the only one.. I gave up after coresponding with the clown 5 times and realizing a trained monkey could be more informative.

On the serious side Rocky, nothing may have changed on your router, however; your ISP may have upgraded some of its services. Happened here to me, used to be able to set static IP's to work on the ISPs DHCP network, but they upgraded to newer DHCP servers and now the old settings to do that will not work no more.

I recomend you update to the latest firmware, there is a slight chance it might help you; but at least they have fixed some security issues with it. Check »www2.corest.com/common/showdoc.p···ccion=10

Also, if you still are having the problems, I saw something on the forums Here »/forum/r···ode=flat

Myself I like to do an extra long reset, just hold the reset button in for an extra 30 seconds or so after you see the LED's blinking indicating that the router has been reset.

Let us know how / if it works..

OK, in response to both kansas and Baud1200, I upgraded firmware to v1.44.2. Kansas, I enabled MTU size 1500.
Tomorrow, upon booting up, I'll see if I STILLLLLL need to do a lite reset. If all goes badly, I think I'd like to use that gorilla in the provided pic, Baud, to smash open this Linksys router!!!!! LOL, jk!

Seriously, I'll check that forum link provided by Baud and mess w/ that. If THAT doesn't work! Well.....I dunno heh.

Wish me luck, fellas.

Rocky, I had a new thought! This is actually a question, LOL, does Comcast require you to "register" the "MAC" address of the computer you are using to connect to their service? You say when you connect direct from computer to modem you don't have the disconnect problem, what might be happening is the MAC address of the router is not recognized by Comcast, therefore the disconnects! Here is a "how to" from Bill_MI, well known here at BBR, »MAC Cloning on the LinkSys Router .

Now, I must admit since I have never had the need to clone my MAC address, I am only guessing here.

You may also want to take the question to the Comcast forum »Comcast HSI , but it is extra busy over there since the AT&T board merged with the Comcast board this week.

I've said it once before and I'll say it again: everything was perfectly FINE for about 2 months w/ my router, nothing had changed when this current problem arose; and all settings in the router had been intact, w/ the exception of opening ports for games and app's.
So I never needed to "clone my MAC address." Though, it is worthy to mention I did do this about a week or two ago, when I was still having problems.

And, obviously, I am still posting here b/c MTU size 1500 didn't work, NOR DID UPGRADING THE FIRMWARE!!!!!!!!!
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is my next move? Shall I try ONCE AGAIN to do a hard reset?? To CALL Linksys? I think we're all running out of ideas here!

This maybe a long shot, but have you tried fixing the DNS servers in your PC's TCP/IP settings to those used by your ISP? By default, if you do not enable the DNS when using DHCP, it will use the DHCP server (your router) to run DNS. I have had problems with this since F/W 1.40.2. I avoid the problems by setting the DNS on my PC.

Rocky, This may sound stupid as well, but do you have an antivirus and/or trojan detector installed?

I have had experience with several exploits that this router was prone to prior to the latest few firmware updates, some of these do cut off internet access. Since they are malicious programs which are installed on your PC, changing router settings would have no effect.

IMO, if you check the DHCP settings on your router page, and it does indeed show that you are obtaining a valid IP from your ISP, the problem may well be with your PC.

We all know how secure windows 98 is check to see that there are no unusual TSR's or apps running in the background on your PC, they might have been installed there and could be affecting your ability to connect to the net.

you can check which tasks are currently running in windows 98 by hitting the ctrl+alt+del keys, a list of tasks will appear.

I symapathize with your Linksys support frustrations.
No matter how intelligent a question you ask, the first response is always "Please hold down the reset button" or "Please download and install the latest firmware"

Wish someone clueful at Linksys just built a better knowledgebase/FAQ.

Two things:
1) Last summer I saw a cable modem that suddenly gave out only 1-hour DHCP leases. It turned out to be MAC registration issue. The cable company had recently updated its database and "lost" our old MAC information. So, things would seem to work fine, but after an hour stopped working.
2) The most time-efficient fix is obviously to borrow and test your connection with another router. It seems wrong, but it is most efficient use of your time.

Flaum, like I previously stated, I used to run a static, so yeah I used to have DNS servers enabled under DNS configuration in my Control Panel->Network settings.
However, when I troubleshooted w/ ComcastI reset everything back to default (router settings, as well as cable settings). In essence, everything is the way it was when I first installed cable modem on my PC.

Perhaps, though, you are saying something different than in the Network settings under control panel. Please elaborate.
I am still not that tech savvy when talking about router settings heh.

Baud, there are no known virii on my PC. I have a good anti-virus prog, BitDefender PRO, and have never had a virus on this current computer. I did an ad-aware spyware removal, nothing unusual. Checked ctl + alt + del panel, nothing there.
Is there any type of program that can check router settings to see if it has been..."altered"..w/o my acknowledgement??
