DoD wipe sounds a bit like overkill, though maybe I misunderstand the circumstances. If you simply write zeroes to the entire drive, the drive is then zeroed, except for attacks using specialized equipment.

You can get a utility to write zeroes to the entire drive from the disk vendors (they seem to be vendor-specific, though I don't know why).
