| Ladies And Gentlemen of the AOL Community...
Today I am in total shock.
I...Wow...
I...It has been confirmed today that a group of customers and friends from my home and on this board are able to sign-on to AOL DSL Without the AOL client!
Yes, we are able to Sign-on through AOL DSL via our own PPPoE clients!
I do not know the whereabouts of how the service went through with such a change.
It was no wonder why recent users, myself included, were able to set up the PS2 simply with our username on setup...
If we are able to sign-on through PPPoE, the rest of you should be able to do it as well on your DSL connection.
My good friend, thebombs12, worked up a tutorial on setting up XP's Native PPPoE:
»How to use PPPoE connection on AOL!
Anyone interested in taking the dive to PPPoE land? -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2003-03-20 01:24:57] |

| yes... i'm in PPPoE land now.
Might I also add that it *could* be that one of the reasons why the AOL Client might've been so laggy lately is due to their change in service. Soon enough, AOL will tell the rest of the subscriber database. [text was edited by author 2003-03-20 00:22:47] |

| So we no longer need to connect via that AOL Plus software?
Just set it up the way thebombs12 did in his setup and away we go?
So, what's the catch? -- You get what you pay for. |

No software, no catch, login with your PPPoE client and go!

| reply to Meteor Dive Does this mean that it can be used with...a router :O? ANd I did this, but apparently don't come out correctly in winxpppoe, so I couldn't connect with my SN, i had to use my moms. When I tried to sign on to AOL using tcp/ip it said I was already logged on, what's up with that? -- #ogc lan - a scrim team |

| reply to Meteor Dive Ok, I just verified it. Using pppoe means that you are sacrificing the aol client. This means no aol client with pppoe, even with the Home Network setting. You can, however, use a different computer to login to a different screen name, when the modem is put through the uplink port. I have no idea what happens when a router is used, you guys can try to find out -- #ogc lan - a scrim team |

A router should work. Just sign on to a different screenname if you want to use the software along with your pppoe session. said by storm64007 : So, that means if you have only one comp and use ppoe, then you can never access the software?
That's for you to decide storm. You can connect to either one at a time or both Most will obviously prefer without using the client. From this point on, AOL can now put their AOL Companion e-mail client to real good use. -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2003-03-20 14:03:59] |

| reply to Meteor Dive I meant to say space's don't come out correctly, I guess dslr used () as a real space. Just to let you know, I changed my pw so that it doesn't haev a space now, and I can logon. Just for those of you with spaces in ur pws and winxpppoe.
ANd we are getting a great deal. This means that we have 7 IPs, if each computer can sign on, and unlimited dial up. weee -- #ogc lan - a scrim team [text was edited by author 2003-03-20 02:59:09] |

Ah! Come on Jonson! Hehe PPPoE isn't that flexible hehe In such Authentication, it won't read it in that term as you've found it.

Now for $54/mo, price sounds just right applying to the events happening as of now.
Now being that we can utilize PPPoE, that would mean Macintosh and Unix Based systems should be able to connect to the AOL broadband services with their own Native Clients.-- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2003-03-20 03:11:51] |

Remember that the AOL client has it's special way to translate it into a unique set making it possible to for the AOL network to read it.
It's not much a big deal for that matter (To tell you the truth, I have never used spaces for passwords before ). -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· |

Good catch. This may have been the reason for the many odd incidents the board experienced from a while ago.
You know, it just brought to my attention. Does anyone remember the Covad Beta Test that was mentioned a while ago? With the service going in this direction, as of now I don't see much of possible conflict if the service ran through on Covad lines. Truthfully, I can't see the AOL Client running AOL DSL on Covad lines.
Looking at a CLEC, by my impulse, I can only see the service run with PPPoE or Static IPs without any obstructions.
I probably thought too long, but hey it's possible AOL went to this conclusion with Covad on their mind.
We should take our time and tackle this one by one. On my notes thus far routers should now be usable, one where an Always ON connection is established. Gaming should now be at ease. Networking should now be as simple to set up like with many other ISPs out there. And now that it brings up to mind, gamers and of such should be able to conduct their own servers/hosts. Again, one step at a time.
