Re: [Rant]I've been thinking...

I like the idea of running 2 blades with one PS. That would help to cut down the cost of maintaining. We can't use the linux flavor disk-less OS because UD doesn't support it so we would need a drive for each blade. I like the design though.

Pardon my ignorance here on UD and TSC.
But once the O/S is up and a drive mapped to the server, you can't run the UD or TSC client from that mapped drive?

Oh and if this is off topic and to much to answer in this thread, please IM me and I'll re-post it in a new thread to keep this thread on topic.

I don't think it is off topic at all and I was un-clear. I meant we couldn't use Linux because the they don't support it. We would need to designate drive space for each blade or at least that is how I would do it.

Ahh okay. Well I think TSC has linux beta clients.
But to keep costs down, the diskless workstations are ideal.
The Seti team ran into problems trying to find 1.2 or 2 gig drives for the crunchenstien and continues to have problems with regards to replaceing any failed drives.

Oh ya.. I had a convo with my Fiance online about possibly hosting it and this is why I'm gonna marry her:

notherrealnick: where would you put it?
certifiably_mark: in the garage
notherrealnick: the garage is packed
certifiably_mark: cover it up with filtered box...
certifiably_mark: bah.. we can fit one more thing in there
notherrealnick: Honey - if it's really important to you - we will make the room.
notherrealnick: I reserve the right to bitch about it.
certifiably_mark: of course!

then she asked :
notherrealnick: wait - how much power will that thing suck down?

and I mysteriously had to attend a meeting.

how much juice would it need? Running 24/7 probably all year long, whoever decides to have it parked in their garage is going to have to pay for all those electrons.

Humm, well let me try and figure that out. The idea of running 2 blades per PS ,in theory, would be like having two boxes using the same amount as one. So if we have a 6 blade "Hope Machine", it would be using the same amount of electricity as 3 desktops, in theory anyway, with twice the crunching power.

as a rough model you can use the following:

with minimal components, assume a blade pulls 200W.

In Southern California we get charged per KW hour or 1000W per hour.

Because I haven't looked at what I'm getting charged per KWH here lately (it would just hurt), I'm going to guess 15cents per KWH.

so for a single blade it would be
0.2KW an hour usage X .15 per hour = .03 per hour cost to run X 24 = $0.72 cents per day to run.

For 6 blades you take $.72 cents per day * 6 (number of blades) = $4.32 per day to run 6 blades or $133.92 for 31 days.

Sorry for the typing it out, but I had to figure it out as I went. Math is not my strong point.

Keep in mind that this is at 15 cents per KW hour. Your mileage may vary.

P.S. I will not be held responsible if anything in this post is wrong or amiss. Again, I am not a mathamatician nor inclined to math at all. You have been warned.

That is a good point. My figures were much less, but, I am also in Ohio and don't pay as much for electricity. But you are correct in the operator will have to expend some monies. Location might be a factor in choosing who would host it.

BTW.. if the blades only run at 150W the cost per 31 days using my model above, drops by $33.48.
So for 6 blades running 24/7 assuming a 15cent per KW/hour cost the monthly cost would be $100.44.

Can you tell that I'm really not in the mood to work much today?

I just got TSC going on my linux box a couple days ago. And this isn't a beta, though I think there is one.
