[DSL] AOL for Broadband - TopSpeed Question »

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

I have tried using this method in WinME (unfortunately) with my cable modem. No dice.

Does it even work with a cable modem or no?
And if it does, could someone help me figure out how the hell to get it to.

The PPPoE method only applies to DSL.

We haven't find out a way to connect through cable as of yet.

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

You should be able to conduct ICS just fine. Have the computer connect without the AOL client and have your PS2 attempt to access online.

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

You did setup ICS correct? You made sure that you selected the NIC (or Dial-up adapter is your using Win98se/ME) that would be accessing the net correct?

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

Let's see if everything is set.

Open the Network and Dial-up Connections folder. Then right click the Internet connection that you want to share and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab, then check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection."

Also note that since your have another NIC there, you provided with a drop down. Choose the appropriate adapter that will be used to share the internet connection. Then just click.

And that should be it.

Connect with your computer online (pppoe), and try again with your PS2

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

Oh, damn. Only DSL?

Bugger!

Hopefully AOL will make a 'lite' version of their software sometime soon.

If AOL uses the same lines as RR, is it possible to rig it as a RR customer?

From what I know some domains are allowed to be accessed w/o AOL open, such as...

It it possible to fake an AOL connection to access all domains and IPs?

I just don't get what goes wrong? I did what I stated just yesterday with an XP computer at my friends house and he's running fine over there.

Hollywoood, to make things less painful in the long run then why don't you get yourself a router? In case you tend to network a few computer on the connection.

No no no, there's no need to use protocals when it's done on the hardware. Everything is done on the hardware. After setting up the hardware, it will connect itself online. Any computer connected connected to the router will have instant access to the net. Connect both your Xbox and and PS2 on the available ports. That's it.

Hey Hollywoood, if you really want to start playing now connect your PS2 or Xbox directly with the modem and input the data that you used on the PPPoE (username, password, e.t.c.) and you should be able to connect just fine

Installing PPPoE clients is not necessary if you going to use a router (WAN).

You have to setup up the router to connect online using PPPoE WAN type.

follow the instructions. for password, it's the password for your aol screen name. if your screen name is jdoe123 enter your jdoe123 password you usually use to connect to aol.

no, you've got it all wrong. raspppoe eliminates the aol client. to use xbox live, just type in your aol sn and password. that's all.

I have already wrote the directions in the first few posts of this thread.

I suggest you educate yourself a little about PPPoE protocols.

With this setup, you don't have to use the AOL client to connect online since you'll be establishing a connection with your PPPoE instead.

Now as for your Xbox, how did you set it up with your network?

It is possible to connect Xbox directly to your DSL modem and inputting your login information to connect the Xbox online, likewise your PC won't have access to the net until you reconnect it to the DSL modem.

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

Okay, let me see if I get this picture straight.

Both of your computers (both upstairs and downstairs) and your Xbox are connected to the Hub. Port 1 not not be used since your DSL Modem is connected to the Uplink port on the Hub correct?

Is my description of your network correct?

All computers, including the Xbox, must use different screen names in order for all of them to connect online.

Your Xbox should be able to go online if you just enter yourscreenname@aol.com as the login name with your password to that specific screen name in the Xbox setup.

Re: RASPPPOE Setup for AOL

Yes, you have it correct. What do you mean by "...that specific screen name in the Xbox setup." It still doesn't work cat 5 goes to the one that says Uplink.... I don't understand why its not working...No ip address is what it says.

OK, Since you have the Modem connected to the uplink port, remember that Port 1 cannot be used.

Use a screen name on the account not used by the other computers on the network and enter your password for that screenname.

And to follow the login in name followed in the format yourscreennmae@aol.com

So for example my screenname Jet88372

Then I type Jet88372@aol.com and password for that account.

As bombs stated, this is protocal used to connect to your AOL Broadband DSL service. Don't get confused seeing how it's grouped as a dial-up property (essentially it is) on the Win9x/ME.

I really do suggest you getting yourself a router.

How exactly did you setup your network with your Xbox?
