Hope Machine, Do we have a host for it?

I would first like to start out by saying.
Thank you, to all the members of this team that have shown interest in this project.
Next I would like to thank Cindy for keeping this post
»[POLL] "Team Discovery Hope Machine"
a sticky for the weekend.
It gave a chance for many members to have a chance to see what they think on this project.
The results are evident that this team would really like in making this come about.
75% of the team voted yes as of this post.
With another 13% being undecided.
So the possibility of 88% of our teammates in favor of this project is foreseeable.

Many questions will be answered and many topics will be looked at if we proceed with this project.
We will vote on a name for this project.
We will probably even set up a committee to take care of the many details that will arise.
From collection of money and parts.
To other technicalities that will arise.

But before all this can happen we need to answer one very important question.

Do we have someone on our team that is willing to host this project?

This person would be the key in making all of this happen.
They would not only need to have space for this project.
But also have the technical knowledge to put this together and be able to maintain it if the time for this arises.
This person will also have to worry about an electrical bill that will be probably greatly
(depending upon how many blades we set up) increased if this would be set up at there residence.
I'm not going to even mention the initial time that is first required in setting this machine up.

Over at Seti we where very lucky to have more then 1 individual that not only had all the qualification to run this.
But was fortunate to not have to worry about an electrical bill, since there electricity was provided to them for free.

So the major hurdle was very quickly overcome.
And we actually had a pick of people that we could go with.
The end result was that our first person and location had to be changed to another host.
And again we where lucky enough to have more then 1 person that we had to choose from so the project was able to continue.

So not to sound like a killjoy,

I ask in this post, if and do we have any members that can host this project?
If not then it would be hard for us to continue.

If we can find someone, then all the other questions will be very quickly answered
and we can go on with the fun of building this, as a team.

One suggestion I've gotten through IM from people who've done it before is: spread it out amongst several people. That way one person doesn't take all the hit on electricity, one person doesn't do all the maintenance, etc. In their case it wasn't a matter of having multiple choices for the single host, it was a matter of making "the machine" actually several machines each located in separate places.

I have plenty of space, and I don't mind taking a hit on the electric bill. There are people here more savvy than me, but I've built many computers so I know my way around. The thing I lack most is TIME. I'm willing to make the necessary sacrifices, if other people aren't able to do it.

I expect it would require a lot of time up front, and then less time after it's up and running.

Capn;

Just to be clear, you are aware of the costs in running even a 6 blade cruncher?

Also the heat factor?

With that being said, you would not need to be the one who sets it up and burns it in, but you could be if you wanted to.

I have gotten the okay to run a small 4 blade cruncher at my place as well. But as with Capn, Time is my biggest enemy right now. For the next 2 months I am extremely busy and have limited time to do "extra" things.

I am willing to help out where I can, when I can and my Fiance understands that if I get involved in this that she will be making sacrafices as well.

I have a server room in my basement and it stays quite cool down there.

I would be willing to host a system, but I would also be willing to donate parts. Lets make it happen!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the costs for running the "Hope Machine" one or more, will be shared by the team by donations won't it? It would be somewhat unfair to expect someone kind enough to house the project to shoulder all the costs for electricity or maintenance, etc. Can this be part of the discussion the planning committee has? I know this is one of many things to be discussed, just a thought.

That is certainly what I was thinking (i.e., everyone would share the additional costs of the hoster).

In fact, I was originally puzzled about the early comment regarding setting up as a registered non-profit organization. But, I have come to understand that a fairly significant amount of ongoing donations would be required, hence the need for non-profit status.

It’s great that we have more then one person that is willing to be the host.

Nightfall, I have a question for you.
Our Captain (Bruce and Mark a.k.a Otterboyy) where very kind in volunteering.
But they also said they had concerns about time, at this time.

Do you find any problems with time?

I could host 1 blade right now. i think i can find time to do it between all the honey-do's that i have to do this spring. after it is set-up then it pretty much will run itself, just need to check on it daily.

i have parts too, so let me know.

I noticed this post became a sticky....

This is a good opportunity to not only pick a host for this project.
We currently have 3 people who have volunteered and I think thats just great.

This is probably a good place to maybe start coming up with a name that was can call this project.

I think the best way to go about doing this (picking a name).
Is just to have all our members throw out a name they like and then we can vote on it.

I have currently seen the name Discovery Hope Machine Project,
proposed by Caliban and it sounds like a great name.

But maybe there are other names even better.
I propose that after we get a list of names,
We make a poll, and as a team vote on it.
And the top voted name is what we can call it.

This is great and starting to be exciting,
hope we can start getting all the pieces into place to make this happen.

I'm not sure if you're asking people to go out and buy a blade server or not. I don't have the finances to do that.

I do, however, have access and ability to run servers in our departmental server room. We keep the temp at 68-70F. It has a halon system, raised floor, touchkey entry.

Our cabinet is fed from two different power feeds.. I think one comes locally (brewery) and the other is from Ameron UE. (Both are big 240V feeds.)

I'm willing to support this as much as I can, but with 5 kids, then main thing I can donate is time in the sense that I'd be willing to serve on any committees that need to be formed.

I really like "Hope Machine" as a name, and I'll keep brainstorming that.

I like that! The fleet of crunchers can be the official mojo machine.

Maybe mojo can be an acronym for something...time to get thinking.

does "mojo" stand for something?
Are we going for a serious name? Or just any name? I'd personally prefer a serious name.
edit: How about "Project Hope"?

We could title the project and organization Project Hope and the machines called TD-MOJO1, TD-MOJO2, etc.
