New to Cable, can I convert my DSL modem?

I got disgusted with Verizon always dropping me off and Charter offered basic cable and hi speed access for the same price, so I took the bait. I'm assuming we're talking about the same protocols; can I convert my dsl modems for cable use, instead of renting theirs? I've got a Cayman 3220H, a Westel wirespeed, and an Alcatel Speedtouch Home. Will any of these work?

No, you can't convert the modem. If your ISP allows, go out and buy a modem - they are $70 or less.

Remember, DSL modems use your phone lines, a cable modem uses your cable line. That means that you'll need to get a cable modem. I highly recommend buying your own modem though. Even though a modem can cost you around $100; it's still cheaper in the long run. Let's say they charge you $15 a month to rent the modem. After like 7 months, the modem that you bought starts "paying" for itself.
Buy a Motorola Surfboard 4100, 4200, or 4220 cable modem. Motorola is reliable, good, and fast. Most cable companies support motorola too.

Unfortunately not. Charter does offer a cable modem lease for $4.95/mo.

However, if you do plan to use it for over 12 months, I would recommend you to buy a cable modem.

In that case, you should get the Toshiba PCX1100. It's a good modem, and it will work fine with just about any router out there. If you plan not to use a router, or have a router with a 100mbit WAN port, then go with the surfboard 4100.
Avoid RCA at all costs. By the way, some places like circuit city will sell you a SB4100 at a major discount if you sign up for service there. I think they support charter.

I personally have a SB4100, and I'm happy with it. The only bad part is that my speed gets limited by my router. However, even with my router, my speeds are still faster than what most cable ISPs offer.
