| AOL is ANTI-GAMING.....
Aol is anti-gaming. They have no regards for gamers. In my area around 10 people that are on aol broadband are unable to play any games online due to high latency. Good Job AOHell on making it so "downloads are good" but latency and routing is all screwed up. Your awesome. Im picked up as an east coast users instead of a west coast user. Check this out.

| reply to nazzurus Yea I have heard that pings aren't too great for the west coast.
Have you tried connecting with PPPoE yet? That may help.

@160.253.x.x | This is all old news. Everyone knows that people on the west coast are better off playing on the servers on the east side. |

| reply to nazzurus AOL's headquarters is in Dulles, Va. Until recently, AOL has not had much of a concern for gamers, since the member base is mostly dial up anyway. My opinion is that will all change with the recent push for Broadband. Maybe we'll see AOL set up some west coast routers/servers? One can only hope. I do know that gaming/pings have been fairly decent for me when I join east coast games. I'm in Oklahoma, kinda in the middle, and east coast servers are always better. |

Well they where never really setup for gaming in the first place And yeah I hope the start adding servers on the west cost so we can get lower pings and latency........
I freaking hate having a high ping through AOL and not been able to do a dam thing about it (beside switch ISP) I wish there was a way we could do something but its aol and there service we use.... |

| To broaden DonnelsonM's statement a little more, here's picture outlining a typical route of Californian customers to a game server in Los Angeles.
As you see, it's a large loop back and forth since AOL's Headquarter's is station in Dulles VA. Your route goes from the West then to the East and then back to the West. Thus, latency will be high.
This why we all suggest you using game servers stationed in the east since you have far less latency since the hops to the servers after hitting AOL HQ will be much less distant.
Only until AOL sets up another office/routers/e.t.c down around the west will the west customers see a drop in latency. -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2003-03-28 02:30:08] |

| Bombs and Meteor-thanks for the extra explanation. That helps to illustrate what is really happening and causing such high latency for the gamers out there! The moral of the story, kids: PLAY ON EAST COAST SERVERS FOR LOWER PINGS! |

| The distance shouldn't really matter though if the signals are traveling through fiber optics. It must be the routing itself that is giving west coasters bad ping times. If it were fiberoptics, and saying meteordive's diagram is 6000 miles total, theoretically you would have a ping of 32 ms. Double that for outside causes and your still looking at a decent ping. t=d/v (6000 miles or 9656064m)/(3*10^8 speed of light) = 32 ms. |

It's too bad we're running mostly copper lines here though. Add hops into and averages, possible bridge taps or MTUs hehe, weather conditions, and line statistics and it doesn't apply any longer.
Fiber Optics do actually perform excellent in the manner you described above. Likewise, such services are expensive. -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2003-03-28 20:37:56] |

MTU (Maintenance Test Unit):

Likewise, MTUs and bridge taps shouldn't be on any Telephone line where DSL is services but few has them on once in a blue moon. I'm just noting some extreme factors there -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2003-03-28 20:47:03] |
