Begginner PS Tutorial: Easy 3D Sphere

This tutorial is a very simple way to make a 3d looking reflective sphere. It is very easy, but not as customizable as CyberRages. You can put text on top of it, and change the colors easily, and change the size, but that's basically the extent of how you can customize it.
Here is what we will be trying to make

First of all, make a new image. I made mine 500x500. You can use any size. If you want a bigger or smaller sphere than mine, make your canvas size bigger or smaller. The size of the ball depends on the size of the canvas.

Next, fill the backround layer with black. Then right click it on the layers menu, and click "Duplicate layer". You can name them if you wish, or just keep them at default. You should now have two completely black layers.

Go to the top layer, and go to Filters>Render>Lens Flare. Use 50-300mm zoom, and set brightness at 150%

Next, go to Filters>Distort>Polar Coordinates. Select Polar to Rectangular, and press ok.

Now go to Image>Rotate Canvas and select Flip Vertical.

Now go back to Filters>Distort>Polar Coordinates. This time check Rectangular to Polar, and click ok.

Right now you have a sphere, but it isn't clearly defined. Select the elliptical marquee tool (On the top left, if it's on the rectangle, click and hold your mouse down, then select the circle from the drop down menu). Now the marquee tool, click the exact center of the point in the middle, and while holding Alt+Shift, drag it out until it has most of the circle in it. Leave a little on the sides. Now go to the Selection menu, and click inverse, or Shift_Ctrl+I You know should have everything but the circle selected.

Now press delete. You should have a sphere on a black backround.

The next step is optional. I thought the thing in the middle looks a little odd, and makes it look less sphere-like. You can try both ways, and decide which you like more.
This is what it is at now

And here is the way it turns out if you follow the next steps

They are very similar, you can choose which you like. Anyways, back to the tutorial.
Like you did before, start from the center of the circle with the elliptical marquee tool while holding Alt+Shift. This time, make a very small circle, very close around the point.

Press Ctrl+C, to copy what you just selected. Now Create a new layer above. Still with the circle selection, press Ctrl+V to paste. Now deselected (Ctrl+D). Go to Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the blur to 9 pixels, and press ok. You can play around with different variations of blurs to find the way you like best.

Now link the two sphere layers by clicking the box next the the eye of the lower sphere layer. You should see a little chain. Now click the chevron (the little sideways triangle) next over opacity to bring up the layer menu. Click merge linked.

You now have two layers, one for the sphere, and one for the backround. You can change the backround if you wish. You can also change the color of the sphere by going to the Hue/Saturation menu under Image>Adjustments

Hope you had fun with my tutorial!

Here's an example of one with text and a color change.
All I did was go to Hue/Saturation and changed the hue to bluish, while saturating it a bit more. Then I made some text, bending it a little, and adding a little border around it, then blurring it. I then set its blend mode to soft light.

Yeah, most things can be converted into PSP, but I don't know of any thing like Polar Coordinates in PSP, so I don't know how it's possible

Wow - that's really cool SLICK! I'm really going to have to learn to animate with that program.

Ya I couldn't find anything flare like in psp7 so I used a sun burst. I played around with the setting of the sun burst but I couldn't get that same glare effect you got on yours.

Here's one with 100% brithness lens flare, it changes a little. Here are two with different textures.
Another interesting one, let's pretend there are two lights shining in at different angles

Wow, that is one cool grid! Here's the best I could get
A very useful way to change the colors is to go to Image>Adjust>Hue/Saturation. Where it says Master, click on it it change it to red. Boost up the saturation alot. Then you can go to the rest of the colors and lower the saturation. You can do this with any color, while changing to lightness and hue also.
