For many years and places cable.

Went to DTV in 1999 and switched to DISH in 2001 (mostly for programming reasons) The TCI/ATT/Comcast cable system here REALLY sucks, not to mention obscenely priced.

Currently have HBO/Cinemax, but will be canceled soon since they are STILL dominantly (re)running the same garbage they have for the past 15 years... with a SPRINKLING of new stuff and new movies.

Had Showtime a few months ago... it was even worse but had a $25 rebate so the two months were free. Only thing I really miss there is Sundance but you can't get that by itself. Showtime sucks even more than HBO.

I have DISH's Amer Top 100, and since I am outside mandated local coverage (and hate the Miami stations anyway) I have the LA networks... since I am up late works out well prime time starting at 11pm. (As well as seeing afternoon shows at night... plus with a PVR time is sort of irrelevant)
I don't believe Cal Worthington is STILL alive and STILL selling cars (The guy Johnny Carson made fun of for years)

We've had DirecTV since shortly after it came out (and let me tell you it was expensive to buy the equipment back then!)

We seldom have issues with it other than short weather outages. The few times we've had to call them, customer support has always been very good.

We are in a very rural location and it's doubtful that cable will ever come within 5 miles of here.

Ditto Seagreen's.
$900+ for the first Deluxe RCA receiver system with dual output LNB.
Since then upgraded to a Sony Dolby Digital 5.1 receiver with optical outputs a few years back.
Dish is currently a Duo DTV/Direcway 1 meter (approx) dish.
Zero rain fade here.

DirecTV..

customer for 2+ years and love them. Charter is horrible in my area and DTV fills the void .
Edit:
Have 2 receivers with one being an ultimateTV recorder as one of them. That thing is awesome !!

I have DirecTV since 1994. I also have basic "antenna" service from Adelphia Cable to cover over-the-air. I did switch to thier Digital service for two months, but it didn't offer the channels I liked so I went back to DTV.

I've got Time Warner's Platinum Digital Cable package including HBO/Cinemax/Showtime/TMC/Starz/Encore, Musicchoice & the Spanish laguage package, and I've also got 2 digital cable boxes. I generally pay $105 per month except when I purchase a PPV movie. I'm so looking forward to iControl VoD and DVR-enabled cable boxes within the next month or so.

200+ channels and I usually just tune in to Fox for 24, That 70's Show and American Idol, ABC for Alias, FX for Lucky and the Shield, NBC for Friends and Scrubs, BBC America for Coupling, and the WB for Angel and Charmed. Since we no longer have a UPN affiliate down here, I miss Buffy and Enterprise. But with eMule, I can download the episodes I'm missing.

Comcast Digital Gold with HBO and Showtime. Good service, good picture, extensive VOD offering, but expensive. $81.99/month plus taxes and fees. Patiently waiting for a DVR offering and HBO on Demand (already have Showtime on Demand).

Best video quality? HDTV, whether delivered by satellite or DC (digital is digital). Realistically, you'll get better overall quality from DirecTV/DISH, because all of their channels are digital, while most DC systems still have "basic" analog channels. Of course, I have digital cable, because I prefer cable internet, and that's more important to me than TV.

I wanted to add that I have the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 boxes.

Just saw a commercial that TW Carolina is now offering "DVR." I may want to sign up for that. Looks like they are using the Explorer 8000 boxes.

I have a Hughes Platinum High Definition Receiver for DirecTV. I watch HBO in HiDef and the HDTV Channel, it is amazing, you have to see it to believe it. Sadly, there is not enough programming to satisfy the average viewer. The standard DirecTV picture quality is outstanding, I highly recommend it, I had digital cable and it is inferior to the satellite TV signal.
