Anyone watched Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kindoms)

I've started watching this series a few days ago and I am impressed. It has the "tried and true high school girl gets sucked into a magical realm and has to deal with it" story. But it is a really fleshed out story and it's own mythos. You learn a a lot about the different characters and learn a lot about the history of the 12 Kingdoms, even down to the politics.

The animation is really good (it is a recent anime, I think, came out in 2001 or 2002. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great story and animation. Here's a link for more info if you are interested...

Re: Anyone watched Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kindoms)

12 Kokki is a very unusual piece.

The story starts with a couple of kids being transported to another world. But its originality that distinguishes from other anime spawns from there.

The first 13 episodes are more or less predictable development: adventure of the kids wandering in a strange world. (But still exceptionally good and original!) From then on, the story takes a rather sharp turn, and becomes a true epic. I'm heading ep 30, and it's getting better and better!

This is in no way kids' anime. There is no stupid humor or hilarious awkwardness. People are born from a tree, yet all I feel watching Juunk Kokki is cold reality. How strange!

OST is very attractive, too. I heard several musical instruments are from Korean classical music, and that'll probably give exotic atmosphere even to Japanese fans.

One downside is that if you don't know Chinese characters (Kanji), you'll have to spend some time to understand all the strange words that are very hard to be explained in a couple English words. To make things worse, there are just too many places, characters, youma(monster), and new concepts that require your close attention -- new stuffs to "learn" keep pouring out every episode!

Re: Anyone watched Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kindoms)

I do agree with you, it is becoming quite the epic. I've gotten through episode 25 so far. What I like is that they don't always follow the lead character. They introduce a new character or briefly mention a new character in passing without going into much detail. Then several episodes later they will create a whole side story on the new character and give you their history and struggle in the 12 Kingdoms.

And now it is getting better with all of the political intrigue and back stabbing (sometime literally!) Very much like real life. I hope the series last for awhile.

It will have 68 episodes over two seasons. Season one has finished at 39, I think. They're going to air season two sometime this summer, if my memory serves me.

Re: Anyone watched Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kindoms)

It is great to hear that it will last two seasons! I figured that it was going to go on for awhile due to the side stories.that they are creating. It should be really interesting when all of the stories converge.

So far, 68 episodes are planned. However, rumor has it that there may be more and possible OVA.

As previously mentioned in a previous post, 12 Kingdoms is a wonderful series. The story, characters, countries, etc. have so much depth and of the highest quality. I'm enjoying it immensely.

The series gets really interesting after the first 2 "stories."

Enjoy.

Re: Anyone watched Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kindoms)

Knew you and others will like it. There are much more to come. Some of you might have to be patient with a couple of episodes because those episodes are used to convey and help the audience understand the 12 Kingdoms and its customs, people, rituals, the significance of the Kirin and their emperors/empresses, where the Kirin are given birth, etc. Very deep and rich stuff. Might get confusing, though.

I'm up to 37 and gagging for more.

Don't forget to buy the DVDs.

One reason I started this thread was to get a few converts for Juuni Kokki. It looks like I succeeded
Once the domestic DVD's become available, I'll be adding them to my collection. I have yet to watch another amime that has such complex and engaging story line. I hope the series continues on for a few more years.

I have ordered the original novel from amazon.co.jp. Only the first two volumes right now. I need to wait 2 more weeks till the estimated delivery date. :-(

Last year, I finished reading Crest of the stars / Banner of the stars novel. It was a fantastic experience.

I'm expecting the same in Juuni Kokki. I just have to read the original novel once I find an excellent anime or movie...
