Did anyone notice how she pulled her "controversial" video from release right after Michael Moore was nearly booed off the stage at the Oscars for his diatribe? You may have seen clips of the video, making a mockery of things with dancers dressed in fatigues, Madonna tossing a grenade, and so on.
What a spineless opportunistic a** she is, to produce this garbage and then run for cover when the prevailing attitude of the society is to reject the message (if there was one). God forbid she should lose any fans due to them seeing what she's really all about. -- Time is an abstract concept invented by carbon based life forms to monitor their constant decay.-Thunderclese |

I think she hurriedly concluded that the show biz axiom "there's no such thing as bad publicity" did not apply in this case, especially when the Hollywood crowd put the hurt on Moore.

She may not like our current president, but she's not an idiot. No way she was gonna piss off the masses and ruin her future business prospects (the way the Dixie Chicks, and to a much lesser extent, Pearl Jam did) by making a major swipe at the president with this video at this time. -- Pissed off at traitorous, ungrateful musicians? Take the Dixie Chicks. I'm sure you've all heard by now that, because their lead singer mentioned how she was ashamed that Bush was from her home state of Texas, their record sales have "plummeted" and country stations are boycotting their music. The truth is that their sales are NOT down. This week, after all the attacks, their album is still at #1 on the Billboard country charts and, according to Entertainment Weekly, on the pop charts during all the brouhaha, they ROSE from #6 to #4. |

| I was not saying that it was a guarantee that Madonna would lose sales by making a video critical of the President's policies. However, her move to change the video and/or delay its release shows that she believes this is indeed a concern.
As for artists and stars taking some sort of hit because of their views on public policy, we can make the argument that there is a bit of a link. The fact that people are protesting ABC's planned show starring Janeane Garafalo, along with Hollywood box office receipts being down by 18% (although I think that's due to the fact that every movie out now sucks and not due to politics), and that Hollywood big-wigs are being uninvited from public events, coupled with Madonna's recent hesitance in her video release shows that there is indeed a concern over these things. -- Pissed off at traitorous, ungrateful musicians? | All the protesting against actors who spoke up about their opinions really isn't going to damage anybody's rep. If anything it might boost it. Dixie Chicks being a prime example. You would think with the traditionalist attitude in country music there would be powerful boycotts. That's not the case. Mainly because not everybody is so engrained in political views that they are going to start hating someone because they have different ones.
All this talk about boycotting French stuff and boycotting anti-war entertainers is all separatist crap. Live and let live I always say. -- Love Science Fiction? www.spacestationzoom.com |

| For what it's worth, the Longhorn restaurant chain has pulled off Dixie Chicks from the music they play in their restaurants nationwide. They may not be alone. That said, it's difficult to tell who is stupider, the boycotters or the artists, since that's what they call themselves. |

Maybe off-topic, but don't you think there's a difference between suppressing free speech (I wish folks would learn to spell that word) and a radio station banning someone from the air waves they have paid a good hefty fee to use, or from the restaurants they've built with their own money? I mean, I know, I'm a supporter of Bush in this particular instance, which must mean I'm an uneducated, Bible-thumping, beer-swilling, angry white male with an SUV, and that means my opinion doesn't count and I'm completely ignorant, but even someone as intellectually inferior as me, can see the difference between throwing people in jail for their expression and refusing to give them air time.
Liberals and war protesters need to learn something: You want respect, show respect. "I protest the war because A, B, and C" will earn you, or the Dixie Chicks, much more respect than "we're not proud he's from Texas" or "I should have known I was making music that appeals to ignorant rednecks" [SIC] ever will. |

Yes, yes, I know, saying anything Anti-Bush these days means your some liberal, commie, unpatriotic S.O.B, etc etc So, we get crap like the Patriot Act, the DMCA 2, the "Family Flexible Time" Act and other evil crap rammed down our throats, but we'd better not speak out against it, because if we do, we're some damned liberal anti-war terrorist.
It's SICKENING.

The pro-Bush quote you attribute to me was from someone else, so please be careful with the autoquote button. No, I replied to his silly post, and you responded attacking me. I was pointing you back to the reason for my post, but you continue to insist I need to "show respect" while you offer none.
I am trying to change it, and you're trying to stop me. But thanks, anyway. -- "When the day comes that anyone can bend our countrys laws and lawmakers to serve selfish, competitive ends, that day democratic government dies" -- Preston Tucker, 1948 (Yep, it's dead.) |

How am I, of all people, trying to stop you? In what way? Let me understand this - you're entitled to your opinion, but the minute I want to express mine, according to you I have no legitimate grounds for expressing my opinion because it's opposed to yours, and you're going to call it "stopping" you? Sounds like a classic liberal attitude to me: "my position is so right that I shouldn't have to be bothered with arguing it or defending it, and anyone who doesn't 'get' it, it's either because of their character flaws, their hidden agendas or inferior intellect." So supposedly my hidden agenda is to "stop" you and I wake up every day with machiavellian plans to accomplish that.
Look at the original post, that you railed against: He used the "b" word and he needs to learn to spell. Other than that, he's got an opinion contrary to yours. That is enough for you to brand him as whatever you want to brand him this week. On top of which, you've discovered that being a martyr is comfortable, so you invent all kinds of dark forces bent on suppression of speech, presumably yours, and on "ramming" nonsense down your throat. That's what I mean: You want to be taken seriously, be serious.
Last, I don't know how I've been disrespectful to you, unless of course the mere act of disagreeing with you is a sign of disrespect. I have addressed your arguments, such as they were, without indignation or sermon, by responding with my own. I've taken them, frankly, more seriously than they deserved to be taken, given that I've seen you do better than this in other posts. As for changing anything, I have no idea what change you hope to accomplish by dismissing an entire population of people based on their opinion. Criticize all you want, and when I read a real criticism from you, I'll know you thought about it seriously. [text was edited by author 2003-04-21 08:39:47] |
