| Roadrunner Xtreme?
I'm about to post a story to the front page containing a letter one of our users received from RR in Nebraska, that not only plainly details Time Warner in that area's usage caps, but it also suggests he upgrade to "Roadrunner Xtreme", for $79.95 a month.
The new tier features 3Mbps Downstream and 512Kbps Up, and has a 40 GIG monthly download cap.
I've heard nothing about this new tier, and Google comes up blank as well. Has anyone else seen this in their region yet? |

Whoops, guess I should have read that closer. As far as I know, Indy is not doing this, but then they just got renamed to Brighthouse and may be waiting for that to take full effect? [text was edited by author 2003-04-18 14:56:26] |

| reply to Karl Bode Hmmm.... I do a lot of videostreaming. They say its "100 hours of videostreaming", but thats not at 500 kbps, and I watch a lot of Dutch television programs that way. Especially with the war and all that I have been having Dutch news on for hours at a time sometimes, causing a LOT of bandwith.
Well, so far it seems that SoCal is not doing anything like mentioned in the story. I'm a very satisfied customer with RR and I don't think I will leave because of it. However, when it turns out that just by doing the daily stuff (I have more people using the internet here) the 15 Gb cap gets exceeded, i'll prolly switch to DSL for $50 before I upgrade to the $70 RR Xtreme deal.
We'll see. I'm a happy customer for now |

Heh..Insight's got that one beat. For five years and counting this is what their website has had to say about owning your own cable modem.
FAQ.... Can I buy my own cable modem?
At this time, Insight Communications owns the cable modem and includes the rental fee for the modem in the monthly fee charged to all Road Runner subscribers. In the future, we expect to make a purchase option available to our customers.
That statement has survived thru even a new website when they went from a one way system called Coaxial Express in 1998..to RR.
Not to mention of course, their availability map which they plan on updating, or even starting for that matter once they get to work on rebuilding their network to even allow for the change over to RR. »www.insight-com.com/net/roadrunn···ame.html
Umm..wasn't that about 3 years ago?
The good news of course is that to get RR, all you need is a pentium 200, which probably WAS the latest system when they last updated this one... »www.insight-com.com/net/roadrunn···ame.html
And, for the people breathlessly waiting for RR to even get here ...they give you a little something to soothe your nerves while waiting for it. A sneak peak..

And lastly, be the FIRST one to sign up for it in the City when it arrives with their Early Bird signup form. »www.insight-com.com/net/roadrunn···ame.html

| reply to Karl Bode I live in Lincoln, NE and got the same letter. It's nice of Time Warner to inform me that I can upgrade to 40 GB/month with "Road Runner Xtreme" and then state I average 159 GB/month in bandwidth usage. Looks like I'll need to find a new service provider. |

| reply to he love me He love me,
I had roadrunner "work at home" service in memphis. Its not really worth it unless you like to upload a bunch. I had it for a few months just cuz I was having fun with my ftp at the time and it was nice to be able to upload to people at 83-85k. However, only SOME people could get this bandwidth from me. Many people could still only get around 40k from me unless they opened up 2 connects then it would max out in the 80's. You will still be on the same node and still have the same pings and downstream speeds as residential. The only pluses are added upload, business support(way better), and an available static IP(if you need this).
Otherwise, its no different than residential. |

| reply to Karl Bode All I can say is that I'm glad I got DSL. I'm willing to bet, Florida RR will soon follow this data cap.
40 GB a month is not enough for me, I use much more than that. Verizon DSL is still an "all you can eat" provider.

And Verizon just lost a lawsuit that the RIAA filed against them.

Verizon had been ordered in January to give up the names of people that have been known to use P2P programs for downloading music and/or movies, like Kazaa. Verizon appealed of course, but lost the appeal this week.
Anyone using Verizon should lay VERY low for a while, especially when you use programs that easily identify your IP number like Kazaa, eMule, eDonkey etc.....
All you can eat allright. But if any of what you eat is copyrighted material you may be in trouble. |

Where you got "Verizon appealed of course, but lost the appeal this week."? The Justice Department is required to weigh in on cases where constitutional issues are raised. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has not ruled on it thus far. |

Either way, 2 court rulings ruled against Verizon and in favor of the recording industry.... and in case they lose: The music industry already has the IP numbers, its only a matter of time before they make Verizon give up the names.
(Oh yes.... Kazaa leaves the IP number on the other side. If you have Kazaa and you are currently uploading, type in "netstat" on your command prompt and see who's connected to port 1214 on your computer....those are the IP adresses currently downloading from you! The recording industry can easily identify people that way.)
Personally I would like to see Verizon WIN. Not because I favor illegal downloading so much, but if they lose you could end up download something BY ACCIDENT because of spyware or whatever and get charged. Not a good thing. |
