 Should I clean this chip?

I just got a SLK800 and I've got my old heatsink off. My question is should I clean this chip first. If so what's best? Rubbing alcohol and q-tip? I'm a bit worried about actually putting liquid on the cpu core though. Advice?

Hi,

Yes, clean the CPU before you use it. Rubbing alcohol is fine. I use a lint free cloth instead of the Qtip. put the Alcohol on the cloth or drip the Qtip in the alcohol. If you use the Qtip you will still need a cloth to make sure you have all the residue off.

How long should I let the chip dry before I actually apply the new heatsink?

Once you have cleaned it and make sure there is no dust or lint on it you can put it in and install the HSF. The alcohol will evaporate very quickly.

How much pressure can I apply to the core itself. I'm applying little pressure to make sure I don't break the chip? Should I worry or can I apply more pressure. What about the stuff that's not actually on the core but around it? Clean that as well?

i would not use rubbing alcohol due to high water content. use isopropyl...91 to 99%....

oh...you really cannot hurt the core or the ceramic coating ...clean with good force then blow off with compressed air to get rid of lint. just don't bend the pins beneath.....;)
