Play Real Media WITHOUT installing RealPlayer

I'm sorry if this is old news, I just stumbled upon this so thought I might share with those of you who have been wanting to view Real Media content but avoid Real software like the plague.

--------------------------------------
Basically you need 2 things:

1] Real codecs
Mirror 1 , Mirror 2

2] Media Player Classic(MPC) ver 6.4.4.2 OR
Tara's Real A/V Input Plugin for Winamp

Install the codecs, launch MPC/Winamp 2.9x and you're set to play Realmedia files.
It works perfectly for me, and I've checked - no spyware/bloatware/junk/virus involved.

(Here's a pic of MPC playing a RM file on my PC)

I've had Tara on my system for quite some time now. Real
Media links now open with Winamp.

Do you think WMP9 with the codec would play RM files?

On the Tara's Real A/V Input Plugin for Winamp website, I noticed the following:

quote:
* You must have Real Player installed in order for this plugin to work. Download Real Player (recommended version of Real Player)

* In order to play Real Jukebox files (RMX), you also need Real Jukebox.
Is this true?

That did not work out for me so I searched and came up with the freeware JetAudio from »www.jetaudio.com/ to play Real Media files.

Still playing with it but it will play the files saved to disk from this site »service.real.com/test/index.html I am testing adding the links to the play list with mixed results. For those interested in computer security sites there is a site that has some presentations and lectures here »www.blackhat.com/html/bh-multi-m···ves.html and they seem to stream through JetAudio.

JetAudio is a lot more »www.jetaudio.com/products/jetaud···dex.html than a video streamer and player and if that is what you need you might want to use a more specialized piece of software.

Paul,

Lurkers inc: thanks for that real.com link. All of those work...to some extent with MPC. All the video clips I get maybe a new frame every 5 seconds, but the audio is fine. All the audio clips work just fine...

No. That's why we have the Real codecs(link above). The codecs were obtained from a PC with Realplayer 8 and RealOne v2 installed. The codec package installs just the codecs and registry entries necessary for playback of Real Media files.

The Media Player Classic is a *little* buggy I'm afraid. If it doesn't work for you could try Tara's plugin for Winamp.

However Lurker's inc's post reminded me about JetAudio. It's also a very good alternative.

said by JetAudio site:

JetAudio supports all major digital audio/video file formats, and CD/DVD.

Supported file formats are :

Windows Sound Files (WAV)
MPEG Audio files (MP1, MP2, MP3) including mp3PRO
MPEG Audio Playlist Files (PLS, M3U)
MPEG Video Files (MPG, MPEG)
Windows Media Audio files (WMA)
Windows Media Video Files (ASF, WMV)
WIndows Video Files (AVI)
DivX Video Files (AVI, DIVX)
Ogg Vorbis Sound Files (OGG)
Apple Audio files (AIF and AIFF)
QuickTime files (QT, MOV and MP4) *
SUN Audio files (AU and SND)
RealMedia Files (RA, RAM, RM, RMM)
MIDI files (MID, RMI and KAR)
IMS file (IMS)
Module files (MOD, S3M, XM, MTM, STM, IT, ULT, 669, FAIR, MED, MDL, MDL, NST, OKT and WOW)
^^ last line too long ^^
Monkey's Audio file format (APE)
MPEG Plus Audio files (MPC)
Free Loseless Audio Codec files (FLAC)

(Note) Some file formats may need codec from third party.
For example, you should install DivX codec to play DivX format video files.

Supported disc formats are :

Audio CD
Video CD
DVD

(Note) DVD playback needs DVD decoder from third party.

* QuickTime 4 or higher version is required

Looks cool. One advantage it has over jetAudio is it does not require Apple's Quicktime player to be installed in order to play .MOV/.QT files.

You can install Real Player and then disable all the spyware. Here's the site with instructions.

Check out this FAQ item I made which explains how to install RealOne so that all the spyware and extra junk is removed.

»Spyware and Adware F.A.Q. »Is it possible to Install RealOne without spyware?

Not to belittle the topic author (who I give a big thumbs up), but I think it's sure a lot easier to use RealOne and remove the spyware than to use two or three other things to play a video.
