Delay is not that bad...

The average delay on satellite for a round trip ping is 700 to 1200 ms ROUND TRIP (at least on Starband), typical is about 800 ms. Each way is about 400 ms typical. That can be worked around for large economic savings. The only problem in the delay for voice is when someone stops and is waiting for the other party to respond, the satellite delay will only ad about a second to this delay.

Re: Delay is not that bad...

I think the problem with delay is different pieces of what you just said getting to the receiving end faster than others. I guess the best way to explain is when the second half of your word gets to the other end and decoded at the exact same time as the first half. Voice really needs to be consistent to sound correct. This can be made worse if there are re-sends due to inconsistent data (errors in the data).

When you are interrupted or in a very active conversation it really does matter. One second may not sound like much but it really is when you actually talk to someone.

And the other point to Direcway is that the upload speed is slower than dial-up

Back in the 80's, as long distance competition was just getting started, there were satellite circuits competing with existing landline and terrestrial microwave.

The rule of thumb used to be that satellite circuits could be sold to Texans, but never to New Yorkers, solely due to the difference in their speed of speech....
