|  [wired] BEFSR41 - Firmware 1.45 Kills the Router!
Please post in here if your router was killed by this new firmware v1.45. Specify the version of your router and firmware it was on before upgrading it to v1.45.
Someone please make this sticky.
Linksys needs to know its their fault and this firmware has to be revised ASAP.

Huntingtown, MD | I upgraded my BEFSR41 V2 from 1.44.2 to 1.45. After the upgrade I got solid red diag light and it now no longer works. Three hours with four Linksys support techs and one supervisor did not change anything. It no longer works at all. |

I killed mine today with 1.45 software downloaded from the web site.
Version 1 router, running 1.44.2 firmware before upgrade.
It ran after the upgrade, and it displayed 1.45 002 as the version, but on the first cold boot it was dead. The Diag lights and then goes out, but no response from the unit.

yep killed my v1 BEFSR41 too:(
I have emailed them loads of times over this yet no one will recoginise this fact.
no doubt only RMAs will be issued to US clients only as tech support in the UK is a joke, and they will just deny anything is wrong or accept that linksys is at fault.

I had the same thing happen to me. Linksys rep email'd me the .44 firmware..I reinstalled it...and all is well. |

My experience was exactly the same as JBrossard. After talking to Linksys they referred me to »https://ssl.linksys.com/rma1.asp to fill out an RMA. Should have it in a few days.
Before the upgrade I was at 1.42.7 My router is a BEFSR41 v1.

I had the same thing happen to my V1 Router.
Replaced 1.44.2 with 1.45, hoping that UPnP might start working. Upgrade went fine. Version 1.45 was displayed in the Configuration Menu. I put in my ISP information (I had reset everything to factory defaults before the Firmware upgrade). It took it fine. Then I closed the Config. menu, reopened it to make sure everything had taken (it had), closed it again and then unplugged the unit to move it in the other room where the DSL modem is. When I got there, it wouldn't connect. I tried EVERYTHING, setting static IPs on my computer, cold resets, long resets, holding the reset button in while powering up the unit, etc. Nothing worked. When I power it up, it acts like a normal router starting up (diag. light does not stay on or flash like with corrupted firmware). I believed that I now owned a purple and gray plastic doorstop until I read here yesterday that someone else got Linksys to RMA them for their two + year old router. I called Linksys myself and was told to get an RMA from their web page, which I did. I sent the router off late Friday afternoon via UPS ground. It should arrive in Irvine Monday or Tuesday, depending on when the UPS truck gets to the UPS store. I guess we'll know soon if they actually send me another unit, won't we?

Man.. I really do feel sorry for you guys.
I had my BEFSR41 V2 for over a year, nothing but poor performance and problems.
Due to all the difficulty this product was giving me, I gave it away, and Learned enough Linux to build a firewall that works!
If it wasn't for Linksys, i probably would not know anything about Linux at all.. thank you Linksys. You have not only forced me to learn Linux, but have given me the presence of mind to never buy a Linksys product again, either for me; or for my customers.
For those of you without routers now, you may want to try »www.ipcop.org/ It's Free under GNU licensing and I am quite happy with their solution. |

I upgraded yesterday to 1.45...went to work...came home a 2am...no issues here at all. Still running great. One of the lucky few I guess?

Hempstead, NY | All i know is in beta(1.45) it was killing routers. Then the official release does the same. Man that is pure bull linksys wake the **** up!.Im lucky my linky still works sr41v2(1.45) but makes me angry!. I hope rma process works out for everyone! |

One of the lucky few? I have only seen 6 - 10 posts from users with this bad flash experience, and most are older v1 models. I believe they are the unlucky few, most users are not having problems or we would probably see more posts about this.

Meanwhile I hooked my unit up to a machine running Ethereal.
The short story after looking at what the box is doing is:
The WAN port is not talking, but the LAN side is sending out packets with the WAN side's MAC address (looking for a DHCP server)!
This firmware is mis-configuring the hardware when it cold boots.
Since you can't program the FLASH from the WAN side (normally) I'm stuck.

I purchased the BEFSR41 in 2000 and it had firmware version 1.30 on it. It worked ok for 30 days or so then it was nothing but trouble. At first I kept thinking it was my ISP then it became evident it was the router. Linksys had me doing the “firmware update version of the week”, for several weeks. then I was finally able to get an RMA. The replacement BEFSR41 (from the RMA) ended having the same problem dropping my connection. Again Linksys had me doing the “firmware update version of the week” this went on and on until the router required being “reset” on a daily basis vs. every couple of days. Since it took a year for this episode to play out Linksys was not obligated to send another replacement. They did me a favor by not sending another. I replaced the Linksys with a Netgear RP114. This router has NEVER dropped my connection and has NEVER required a reset. It’s been in service for almost 2 years. As far as I could see there was only one firmware update for my Netgear RP114. The RP114 is obsolete now but I’ve seen refurbished RP114’s on eBay for about $40. I have no problem recommending this make/model. I would suggest anyone still having issues with their Linksys cut your losses and buy a Netgear or another brand. |

I have started this post just for this specific reason. Users will at least avoid the hassle of RMA most of the times, and for the unlucky ones well we'll have hard proof to show Linksys what their new firmware does to the poor man's router.

My BEFSR41 (v. 1) now functions as an equivalent to a really dumb hub (no IP address, and thus unmanageable) thanks to the 1.45 firmware code.
For all you folks who have convinced Linksys to grant you an RMA, my hat's off to you.
The time on the phone with the tech support folks, and the follow up emails I've composed thus far haven't produced any favorable steps towards a resolution yet.
*sheeesh* - no reference to beta in the release notes, and the firmware code is placed on a website accessible to the public - and I still get questioned in a blatantly confrontational manner "why would I be upgrading the firmware?"
Ah well. Life goes ... on. |
