Here's my problem: when I download files using the BitTorrent P2P app, my Linksys BEFCMU10v2 will "freeze" after about five minutes of transferring and need to be power cycled in order to reconnect to my cable ISP (Comcast). Has anyone else here experienced this problem, particularly using this specific modem? Thanks. -- Regards,MrPenguin |

I download from BitTorrent all the time and I'm using the BEFCMU10v2 on Comcast. Are you using a router? I'm using the WRT54G and have Port Forwarding set up for BitTorrent, haven't had any crashes or freezes and I DL about 1 GB per day...

Yes, I'm behind a Linksys BEFSR41 running the latest stable firmware (1.39). This problem always crops about roughly five minutes into any BitTorrent transfer. May I ask which port or port ranges you're forwarding?

Check out my current settings on my router in the screenshot attached... I'm also running the latest firmware for the WRT54G.

 | reply to MrPenguin Yep, having the same problem here. The modem will simply disconnect anywhere from 15mins(lowest I've seen yet) to 8+hours using BitTorrent. Seems to happen faster when I set my upload rate higher in the experimental version of BitTorrent. Talked with Comcast for about 2 hours regarding this problem. I removed my router completely for one test and the problem STILL happened. I did an FTP upload test, and at full upload bandwidth (256kbits/sec) I had no disconnection after 3 hours. I was going to purchase another Linksys modem and see if the problem was caused by a faulty modem but now I'm thinking it could be a design flaw/firmware bug. BTW, my hardware version in my BEFCMU10 v2 is 4.0, firmware version is 1.0.6. Im curious as to what others have who are having and not having problems with BitTorrent. Thanks.

rishid7 join:2003-01-28 North Attleboro, MA | reply to MrPenguin I get same problems have BEFSR41 and BEFCMU10 v2, also tried modem to PC and still disconnects. I think it has to do with the modem. Hardware version is 4.0 and Firmware 1.0.6. On comcast also. Need a fix from Linksys, I am pretty sure. |

 | reply to MrPenguin Aye, I'm seeing the same thing too. My BEFCMU10 V2 will crap out after a bit of downloading via BitTorrent. Thankfully, I have a spare Moto 4200 I just got ahold of, so I'm going to do a swap. |
|
 | reply to MrPenguin I am having this problem too. and it is pissing me off that linksys has done nothing about it. not even a firmware update since december. i really liked the router and everything but next time im going with a different company. |
|
 | I also get this problem. It doesn't have to be BitTorrent either. Any large capacity download can knock out the modem. VERY annoying. |
|
 | reply to MrPenguin I use a Linux machine for routing and also have version 2 of the Linksys cable modem. I have the same problem, but it seems to freeze whenever I have several connections happening. Like a website full of pictures, while downloading other stuff. I just reset the modem 3 times today. I know it freezes when I can't get to 192.168.100.1. |

| reply to MrPenguin I have the same problem with my BEFCMU10 v.2 . Sometimes it takes just a few minutes for me to disconnect. I also am behind a BEFW11S4 v.2 router and experience the same problems (firmware version 1.45) [text was edited by author 2003-07-29 21:32:57] |

 | reply to MrPenguin Just took a nice long shower and feeling nice today so i guess i'll share how i fixed this problem. Might be a bit long but its worth to read :P
Before i start... here's my comp specs: OS: WinXP Service Pack 1 Speed: 1Ghz NIC card: Linksys LNE100TX Connection: Cable Cable Modem: Toshiba PCX 2500 (provided by my cable provider) Router: Linksys Instant BroadbandEtherFast®Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4-Port Switch/VPN EndPoint ...model BEFSX41 ... Protects PCs from Ping of Death, SYN Flood, Land Attacks, IP Spoofing, and Other DoS (Denial of Service) Attacks etc...
Ok, here we go....
I used to have this problem... not only with Bittorrent but also with mIRC when im downloading at superfast speed or too many downloads going on. In mIRC, i would get sudden reboots, Blue Screen of Death w/ the message IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message. As i said, this only happens when i download at fast speeds and too many transfers going on....only happens when downloading and also only happens on mIRC. Haven't happen on FTP or Web transfers... even at fast speed. Then Bittorrent came....also had the same problem...now to fix this... here's what u need do:
You need Linksys NIC card LNE100TX v4 or v5. Im saying this coz this is the only NIC card that passed my tests. Don't get the newer version of the Linksys NIC cards.. u must get LNE100TX v4 or v5. Now go to »www.admtek.com.tw/download/AN983B.htm and download the right driver for the NIC card... choose depending on what Windows OS u use...then upgrade yer NIC card driver... duh! This will fix the Blue Screen's u get and sudden reboots.
Now, I don't know why most of u think the cable modem causes the sudden drop of Internet connection or the freezes... but as for me.. it was the router... I used to have Netgear RP614. I tested my comp without the router and have like 7 Bittorrent transfers going on... also in fast speeds and my Internet connection didn't drop or freeze my comp. Well, its true tho that I might be using a different cable modem than yours--mine is Toshiba... so u might need to get that one or another.
Anyway, the next step is to get that router Linksys Instant BroadbandEtherFast®Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4-Port Switch/VPN EndPoint model BEFSX41...It's a bit expensive but mannn... it sure was worth it. This baby can take a lot of beating on Bittorrents, mIRC, etc. I got 2 comps networked and i was downloading like crazy on Bittorrent & mIRC at the same time on my Server comp...while i was still surfing the Net on my other comp while im also transfering huge files from my Server comp to my Gaming comp through my LAN. Usually...when i do this...for the first 15 mins or less... my Internet connection would drop on both computers even if only one is using Bittorrent. Also, im using this w/ ZoneAlarm Pro v4 Firewall and its still fine. I also got DMZ host enabled on my Server comp.
Well, i know i kinda jump on most of my explanations, & i understand this can cost u money... but hey...i tried so many freaking ways to beat this bug and surfed on so many forums & still didn't fix all my problems. So its up to u...whether u do this setup or not... as for me....im so happy right now i don't have to worry getting my Internet connection dropped, BSOD, sudden reboots, or freezes when i use Bittorrent or mIRC. And just for the record... im a power-user... i run a server 24/7 that hasn't been shutdowned for almost 8 months and transfers always going on... i download 6 gigs a day or more since i have a lot of access to private ftp's & dumps etc.
o.. this setup should also work in Win2k, ME, 98...as long as u get that driver for the NIC. |

 | reply to MrPenguin I have the same problem with my Linksys modem. I guess I'll just have to replace it with something else |
|
 | I have this exact same problem, but with a scientific atlanta webstar modem. Connection just drops when using bittorrent/emule etc etc. I have narrowed this problem down slightly as far as it is a cable modem problem. Not a router/NIC/fierwall problem.... so you arn't all alone when you're isp tells u it's your hardware thats crap, not their crappy modem and get very angry.
The number one problem with this issue is that everyone who suffers it is using, ehem, programs which are slightly, um, illegal! I've searched 1000's of forums with very few answers, and after hours of tests the best i can come up with is limiting the number of max connections if using a modded bittorrent, or emule. I find the main problem is the maximum number of connections every five seconds options... turn it down to 15 and hangs certainly don't come as reguarly. Anyone have a permanent solution out there? |
