IE6 Gif Display Bug --RESOLVED--

I'll paste the original text and then link to the thread where it was found. [Thanks ako23 and James!]

2 ways of fixing:

The easy way:
- Download this and run it, choosing 'Yes'
- Restart IE (or your PC)

The manual way:
- Open the registry
- Browse to: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\
- Delete the 'http', 'https' and 'ftp' (leave the 'mk' key)

May have to restart PC or IE for changes to take effect (I had to).

I'd be interested in seeing if this alleviates the problem for others.

I'd like to post a question within this thread as well...I had a hunch based on what another friend had told me.

How many people who experience the .gif bug use, have used or installed CuteFTP before?

Interesting. I never had the GIF problem. I just checked and I don't have the http, https, and ftp keys either, just the mk key. Never had cuteFTP on the box (WinXP Pro).

I've yet to see the .gif bug since doing the above. I really hope this is the resolution, but we all know that not everything works for everyone and sometimes it works on its own anyways.

So far, so good!

almost all *.gifs on a web page are not displayed after installing SP1.

the last post in the IEX board said that the fix didn't work for him.

I've tried everything available. Searched numerous threads, asked many experts, consulted MSDN hundreds of times. Nothing else worked for me.

This did.

The last user on the forum said it worked for him and then it came back, we don't know if a program he used had caused the return of it, or even if the entries there had returned due to something run.

But what's the big deal here? If you don't want to try it, don't, it's as simple as that. I posted this here because it worked for me when NOTHING else did.

I don't understand all the posts here with skepticism when nobody has tried it. If you're afraid, back-up your registry and do it. If not, live with the bug, I just thought I'd try to spread some news that took a lot of stress out of my troubleshooting.

Good luck.

I just tried it and it works fine for me. Yes I did make a backup of the registry entries just in case. So far so good.

Nice find.

I am not going to install and uninstall SP1 or Sp1a if this doesn't work. Those of you who have SP1 and SP1a have nothing to loose by trying this. I do because I don't want to go thru all the hastle of removing SP1 again if I don't have to.

i'm not saying it doesn't work. i don't have sp1 installed right now though. i'm just saying that it could be a coincidence and yea there's no harm.

I didn't mean to imply for people to install SP1 just to try it. That wasn't my intention at all. I just didn't like the skepticism that seemed to be floating around.

I really hope more people try this so we can find out if this is a valid fix or not, for me, it was a resolution...I am hoping it is for everyone else as well.

I have only had the "GIF" problem on 1 of my 3 XP computers.

I did a regedit similar to what you posted, and it worked for me.

This is what I removed from my registry to repair my GIF problem.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\HTTPS]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\HTTPS\ZDA]
"CLSID"="{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}"
"Pattern1"=""
_______________________________________________________________________________
I also removed the key that it pointed to.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}]
@="DownloadAcceleratorIE Class"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\DAP\\dapie.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\ProgID]
@="DAPIE.DownloadAcceleratorIE.1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\Programmable]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\TypeLib]
@="{5BFA1DA1-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\VersionIndependentProgID]

@="DAPIE.DownloadAcceleratorIE"
______________________________________________________________________________

I have not had any issue with displaying GIFS since removing these keys from my registry.

I have installed this on two PC's with WIN XP: one with SP1 installed as an update and one where SP1 was part of the initial installation CD. All I can say is there are NO MORE RED X's in place of gifs on either machine. I am quite pleased!!!

Same here with me. Never had problems displaying GIFs in Windows XP SP1 or for the gold version either. Then again, I have not used CuteFTP ever as WS_FTP LE works just fine for me anyway.

I did a clean install of Windows XP with SP1 integrated. I haven't had the gif problem in XP at all. I checked the registry keys mentioned and the items to be removed do not exist in my registry. Guess I'll make sure that they don't ever show up either. I dual boot with WIN98SE which has been plagued with the gif problem as long as I can remember. I'm off to check its registry. Thanks!

I use CuteFTP and get the gif problem, but I never installed SP1 so it does not matter too much (I run W2K SP3)

By the way the gif "problem" covers all flavors of windows with IE6 sp1 installed, going to give this "fix" a shot, I have tried all the others with no success.

*************
"Seems" to have fixed the problem here >> but we shall see, and yes I have used CuteFTP >>

Re: IE6 Gif Display Bug --RESOLVED--

d00by...after people upgraded to SP1 on winxp there was an issue of gif images not showing up. To see if it affects you simple go to a page with gifs and see it you get a red x box where the pic should be...here is one for example. »team-discovery.net/tscstats.html if you can see the little green and red arrows you are fine..if not try the fix above.

Now on to the fix...it work for me on win-xp sp1! Thanks for the fix!.

I went to remove the http, https, and ftp keys and noticed first that I didn't have an https. But the http and ftp both made reference to GetRight. I backed up the registry, deleted the keys, and that seemed to correct the problem. I then went ahead and uninstalled GetRight, which forced me to reboot. Once rebooted the problem reappeared. I checked the registry again, and the http and ftp keys had also reappeared. I deleted them again, rebooted again, and so far so good....

I don't have the SP1 patch...

I guess I am safe then from this bug, though not very safe from other bugs
