IE6 Gif Display Bug --RESOLVED--

I'll paste the original text and then link to the thread where it was found. [Thanks ako23 and James!]

2 ways of fixing:

The easy way:
- Download this and run it, choosing 'Yes'
- Restart IE (or your PC)

The manual way:
- Open the registry
- Browse to: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\
- Delete the 'http', 'https' and 'ftp' (leave the 'mk' key)

May have to restart PC or IE for changes to take effect (I had to).

I'd be interested in seeing if this alleviates the problem for others.

I'd like to post a question within this thread as well...I had a hunch based on what another friend had told me.

How many people who experience the .gif bug use, have used or installed CuteFTP before?

Interesting. I never had the GIF problem. I just checked and I don't have the http, https, and ftp keys either, just the mk key. Never had cuteFTP on the box (WinXP Pro).

Does this work?

I've yet to see the .gif bug since doing the above. I really hope this is the resolution, but we all know that not everything works for everyone and sometimes it works on its own anyways.

So far, so good!

almost all *.gifs on a web page are not displayed after installing SP1.

the last post in the IEX board said that the fix didn't work for him.

I've tried everything available. Searched numerous threads, asked many experts, consulted MSDN hundreds of times. Nothing else worked for me.

This did.

The last user on the forum said it worked for him and then it came back, we don't know if a program he used had caused the return of it, or even if the entries there had returned due to something run.

But what's the big deal here? If you don't want to try it, don't, it's as simple as that. I posted this here because it worked for me when NOTHING else did.

I don't understand all the posts here with skepticism when nobody has tried it. If you're afraid, back-up your registry and do it. If not, live with the bug, I just thought I'd try to spread some news that took a lot of stress out of my troubleshooting.

Good luck.

I just tried it and it works fine for me. Yes I did make a backup of the registry entries just in case. So far so good.

Nice find.

I am not going to install and uninstall SP1 or Sp1a if this doesn't work. Those of you who have SP1 and SP1a have nothing to loose by trying this. I do because I don't want to go thru all the hastle of removing SP1 again if I don't have to.

i'm not saying it doesn't work. i don't have sp1 installed right now though. i'm just saying that it could be a coincidence and yea there's no harm.

I didn't mean to imply for people to install SP1 just to try it. That wasn't my intention at all. I just didn't like the skepticism that seemed to be floating around.

I really hope more people try this so we can find out if this is a valid fix or not, for me, it was a resolution...I am hoping it is for everyone else as well.

I have only had the "GIF" problem on 1 of my 3 XP computers.

I did a regedit similar to what you posted, and it worked for me.

This is what I removed from my registry to repair my GIF problem.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\HTTPS]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\HTTPS\ZDA]
"CLSID"="{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}"
"Pattern1"=""
_______________________________________________________________________________
I also removed the key that it pointed to.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}]
@="DownloadAcceleratorIE Class"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\DAP\\dapie.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\ProgID]
@="DAPIE.DownloadAcceleratorIE.1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\Programmable]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\TypeLib]
@="{5BFA1DA1-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\VersionIndependentProgID]

@="DAPIE.DownloadAcceleratorIE"
______________________________________________________________________________

I have not had any issue with displaying GIFS since removing these keys from my registry.
