| reply to Caliban I dont mean to be a jerk or anything, but what do you see in this kenshin anime? sure, its deeper than most cartoon network fare (though i harken back to gundam wing. they day they stopped that was the day i stoped paying much attention to toonami) but, as a swordsman i can testify to this, its not as realistic as they would have you think. Not that that matters, but it bugs me.
I've bought most of the subs of the series (before it came to cartoon network), and the kyoto arc is admitedly quite good, esp. when compared to the earlier arcs. |

It's an anime that knows when it's time for the "bubble eyes" and sweat drops to appear.
The fight scenes are very well done, and in most cases if not all, absent of all "comedic" pauses...
It's about as close to a real-life Anime sci-fi drama as you can get...

And when they appear, they are hilarious! All of Kenshin's bubble-eyes make my laugh for some reason, and Ken and Sano hiding on the roof making bug noises after Yahiko's fight had me in tears.
Something about making a extremely serious character have that super-rare comedy moment works too, i.e. the bit with Saito when he told Ken and Misao that he had a wife (of course, Saito was stone-faced as always), and the sequence ending with him calling Misao "weasel girl".
As much as I enjoyed Trigun, if they had made Vash more serious throughout the series his funny moments would have been that much more enjoyable. -- "I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey, State Department Spokesman |
