Re: Westell DGNIcon (Modem Browser)

BTW I noticed that as well. Once the program is installed, even the modems that fail to be found work with it.

Strange indeed, I'm no guru, and I'm too tired to think straight. So suffice it to say I am glad it didn't screw up your router AGB

G'night!

I asked Gwion if it was alright to sticky the above two threads until we can a little co-operation going and get it all into the FAQ; as most of it post-dates the immediate VZ roll out.

Thanks Gwion! I hope this helps some people understand the changes. The GTE thread is very informative.

Same thing here. The diagnostic program seems a bit temperamental, but it eventually finds the modem.

I looked on google but found no result, is there a simmilar program for the C90? When a tech came to my house hew had a 'line tester' that seemed to do the same thing as this program, more or less. Is there a program that can emulate this tester for the c90?

I've run the Westell diagnostic utility on a C90-36R516... worked perfectly.

I have the "Westell B90-36R515-01" I downloaded and installed the »mbrowser1.webhop.net/ . It will not work through a router and lacks some of the diagnostics ability of the newer Westell 2xxx modems.

Yeah, the Westell Diagnostic utility won't work through a router; the DSL modem must be directly connected to the PC.

>> Is there a similar program for the C90

According to Dan's post in one of the most recent Westell forum threads on the subject, the utility works with a C90-36R51x (?)

Give it a try, make sure the modem is in bridge mode and directly connected.

You might want to first try the smaller executable right from Westell's Verizon page quoted several times above or mbrowser2.webhop.net (bit by bit identical.)

Dan's comments on the subject of C90s/DGNIcon are:

"Yes, the Westell utility works perfectly with my C90 (revision F).

As I'm posting from a VERY legacy pc and not from home,

By looking at the stats, is there any way to tell what my max attainable sync rate is?
Thanks in advance.

What type of ADSL service plan do you have, including what your line is provisioned for (in other words, the maximum speed that you're supposed to get according to your DSL provider)?

From those stats, it appears that you are synced at 384/128. Are you very far from the CO? Also, what model of Westell modem are you using?

Hi,

I've the same questions as Dan with one quick comment regarding your downstream attenuation rate. It's rather high at 72.0dBm.

As the signal traverses copper, it tends to fade, especially true for signals at high frequencies and high bit rates. This of course places the well known distance limit on full rate ADSL.

Usually the amount of attenuation tends to be lower with 24 gauge (0.5 millimeter) wiring. 26 gauge wire (0.4 millimeters) doesn't have the same "reach".

Your modem's downstream noise margin (higher is better) is a bit on the low side as well, BUT, I have no trouble running at 12dB downstream noise margin with 1500/128.

A modem browser program won't replace an EWL however; but what sort of plan do you subscribe to with Ameritech?

BTW can you tell us about your Westell? I understand SBC ships a 2100 as well, slightly modified but with the NAT/Firewall interface intact. Am I right on this?

Cheers, hth

Your modem is synced with the DSLAM at the maximum provisioning rate, so that's a good sign. By examining your downstream noise margin (low), your output power (high) and your attenuation (high), I'd say that your effective subscriber loop length is long (in other words, you are fairly distant from the central office).

I can't install it. Get a message telling me it doesn't support my B90-36R515 modem. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for all the great info! The Modem Browser works as promised (Westell B90-36R515-01), although it does not work when Zone Alarm is active. We had the 640/90 Bell Atlantic connection since June 2001, and it was pretty poor early on. On 5/27 I put the call in to Verizon for the upgrade, which arrived on 6/2. Nice!!
