Or at least something to tell us what is going with the DNS issue. Upgrade? Busted? Bad attempt at shaping? What?
All I know is that I'm still pulling lotsa DNS errors here in MD. |

| Same in Arlington VA, its sort of hard to get stuff done when 1/4 of the new sites you want to visit are unreachable, and those are sites verified working from my workplace. iolaire
PS: I bet Verizon's $35 internet access doesn't have these DNS problems? |

Every ISP I have been with in the past has always had DNS trouble from time to time. my dialup has DNS trouble, @home had DNS trouble. And with Comcast I've also had DNS trouble.
In all cases with each ISP it was the same. Just a intermittent loss every now and again. I believe while at comcast i've only seen DNS trouble twice though. -- Forum Posts:2400 |

We have a status page, bigmonkey. But it's up to us to keep it updated. Perhaps you'd like to contribute?
**Network Outage Posts Only Please!!**
I've long since ditched 68.48.0.5 & 6, and feel absolutely no remorse, given the history of grief: 5/13 ( i_m_weasel ): MD area DNS slow as molasses??? 4/30 ( Temporious ): DNS problems in Montgomery MD? 4/24 ( somebodeez ): Anything going on in Anne Arundel co. today? 3/28 ( metakomm ): DNS Problems? 3/12 ( big monkey ): Alt DNS anyone?
Judging by their names, I suspect you can find those servers (or whatever they are) at Tech Road:
Name: ns01.rtchrd01.md.comcast.net Address: 68.48.0.5
Name: ns02.rtchrd01.md.comcast.net Address: 68.48.0.6

I believe these are what Comcast uses as a dual purpose DNS and DHCP server... »sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Sy···105.html
quite possibly they use those boxes for more.. dunno..
DNS is a no-brainier.. simple to setup and simple to keep running.
trust me, the problem is not the DNS servers themselves, rather it's a network problem or possibly the server load is too much because too many other processes are being run.
Comcast should really run the DNS on separate machines.. a couple of cheap 500 MHz Xeon machines with a gig of memory running xBSD or Solaris Intel would be more than sufficient to serve DNS for a POP. Cost is peanuts, less than a thousand dollars would get a decent pair of machines to run it on.
I would say even a monkey could run a reliable DNS server, but then this is Comcast of Montgomery County we're talking about here. -- Work Harder! Millions on welfare depend on you. |

| reply to JTRockville Should've made it clear my plea was directed at frickin' Comcast. THEY'RE the only ones who know what is going on. While I truly appreciate the dslr fori which I do troll, they do not substitute for status page maintained by the net operator.
As of this second I do not KNOW that Comcast KNOWS it has a chronic problem. |

According to my log book, I've been experiencing DNS problems since December of last year and I've been calling in these problems. (I stopped noticing problems after switching to non-Comcast DNS in mid-April.)
So when you say that Comcast IS aware .. and is working on it, I'm wondering if that means anything is different because they've certainly been aware and working on it for months now. Can you provide any more detail as to how their current awareness/work is any different than it was over the past six months? |

as long as Comcast operates the way they do.. a reliable and up-to-date status page will be impossible.
imagine.. hundreds of offices, regions, departments, systems, or whatever you want to call them.. each one operating independently of each other and not a single one of them communicating with each other.
then picture this... an employee, a field tech, out on an install or service call noticing that DNS isn't working or a modem will not get a DHCP lease calling in to their local dispatch or Internet support to see if maybe there is a problem and finally after 30-90 minutes of waiting for them to dig deeper checking the problem, is finally told that such and such server/service is down and has been down for several hours with no idea as to a time-frame for a resolution.
truly, there is a complete and alarmingly total lack of communication going all the way down to the local level -- in that regards Comcast is no better than a typical ILEC telephone company.
if problems cannot be communicated on a local level in a timely manner, how can one expect that problems be communicated on a national or even a regional level? |

| reply to big monkey For people having trouble with the DNS server, just run your own cache only DNS server on your local machine. Or on your router box. Its is very simple to setup, you don't need to open any ports to the outside world, you can make it listen just on your internal IPs. I have been running my own for few years and it has never given me a problem.

Those are the only files you need to setup to get your DNS server working. You should be able to cut and paste that even if you are setting it up under windows, you will just need to fix the file locations.

Well the question is why are you trying to run a DNS on a IP addy? :P Unless you were doing a RDNS which in either case the DHCP does not have one.
