verizon 1.5mb vs ool

I was just flirting with the idea of going with verizons new offer of 1.5mb vs ool. Now I know that ool is just superfast. I dont really download large files except the usual mp3 files from imesh or kazaa. When the downloads come thru they are usually not at the ool rated speed. Maybe the person hosting the file is putting a cap on upload bandwith. This is the case on small and large files on p2p network. In terms of loading pages and graphics i think dsl is superior since you do get the dedicated line. Before ool I had dsl 1.5mb and lived down the road from the C.O. so i always got the top speed. That is the only concern at the moment is my distance to the C.O. I would love to save 15 dollars per month. Any suggestions?

The first thing that would as is can I get DSL where I live now? Have you looked into your distance from the CO?

Well if the dl speed is not a major concern see how far you are from the CO and make the switch.

Sounds like that would be a good move for you.

it depends, do u upload a decent large file, to your friends, then u might miss ool upload speeds. BUt like u said, u only do the basics, so dsl probably would be the best choice, because u dodnt have to worry and watch every download or upload, and your dsl wont go out, nearlly as much as ool

What is their offer? 1.5/128? If that is enough for your needs (sounds like it is), makes sense to save the $15/mo.

What dedicated line? You're only getting a 'dedicated' line for your 1.5mbps to the CO... After that, its shared just like anything else.. Is your OOL connection so saturated that during peak times, your downstream drops to 1.5? If not, your OOL connection will still be superior to that 'dedicated' DSL line..

Telcos have a nice twist with that whole 'cable modem is shared bandwidth' thing... DSL is shared too -- just instead of it being shared with your neighbors on the block, its shared with whoever else is utilizing the pipe at the CO.

I would not compare DSL vs Cable but Verizon vs OOL. OOL mail and news servers are constantly prone to down time and screw-ups. Also OOL has upload restrictions and port blocking.

Verizon from what I have been told has a better record than OOL. My friend has been using DU Meter to compare the news server. For example today OOL news is averaging 38kb. Verizon is a steady 300kb. That's a big difference.

The problem with DSL is availability and the distance from the CO. Many of us are still out of range.

o, you must have had it for a month or 2. i first gotten my dsl 2years ago, and it never went out. i get steady speeds, all the time. Now if you go straight threw verizon, u will get 1.5. i get aol dsl, so the contract have it cap at in the 700's, but i think that contract might change soon.

DSL is good in terms of keeping your speed stable because it has a dedicated Line from you to your CO, but Cable shares bandwidth with everyone on your block, but has very high Speeds, so all and all Cable is faster, thats why Im switching to OOL from my current AOL DSL.

NO, i was caught up, when i wanted OOL, but know i have seen ool flaws. When i first came to this site, ool was alot better, and as each month pass, it's gotten worse and worse. Now people who are new 2 broadband, might be fasinated by ool speeds(witch are great)but dont know of the so many other flaws. Do people really think, ool is going to get an A+ by pcmag this year? Now, aol speeds might not be able to compare to ool speeds, but i never have to watch every download and upload, just to worry about getting caped, i know im going to have a steady connection, and it will hardley get disconnected, and now i can connect to the net without the aol software(witch isnt that big of a deal to me, but to other it's really big) and can connect online with my ps2.

Didnt u say, u staying with aol instead of going to verizon, because of some restriction? OOL have way more restrictions then verizon.

I use to be an OOL customer but their services just suck for my taste. I have been using Veriozn for over a year with out any major problems. I had one outage that lasted the amount of time to reboot my modem and the news servers and email servers have been rock solid. Plus my bill has gone down a lot over time and not up like OOL has.

The only thing OOL has on Verizon is download speed when/if you can use it all.

Well Now I have a server thats not here, I mine as well go with OOL now, I was going with Verizon in the first place because I thought they would have high speed so I can run my webserver from home, looks like that didnt work so someone offered me a server for free so now I can go with OOL and OOL doesnt allow servers either.
