RocktagonSlightly BentPremium join:2000-11-04 Chattaroy, WA | D and E, although AtGuard is a fine software firewall with the correct ruleset. I use it in addition to ZA for the additional active content filters, such as ActiveX,Java and JavaScript, cookies, and ads. The firewall has a learning phase useful to see individual requests within an application.
Excellent links my friend, this thread should be archived. Vote link at top of page for posterities sake Thanks -- nam et ipsa scientia potestas est

dont forget whatis.com » whatis.techtarget.com/definition···,00.htmlfirewall A firewall is a set of related programs, located at a network gateway server, that protects the resources of a private network from users from other networks. (The term also implies the security policy that is used with the programs.) An enterprise with an intranet that allows its workers access to the wider Internet installs a firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its own private data resources and for controlling what outside resources its own users have access to. Basically, a firewall, working closely with a router program, examines each network packet to determine whether to forward it toward its destination. A firewall also includes or works with a proxy server that makes network requests on behalf of workstation users. A firewall is often installed in a specially designated computer separate from the rest of the network so that no incoming request can get directly at private network resources. There are a number of firewall screening methods. A simple one is to screen requests to make sure they come from acceptable (previously identified) domain name and Internet Protocol addresses. For mobile users, firewalls allow remote access in to the private network by the use of secure logon procedures and authentication certificates. A number of companies make firewall products. Features include logging and reporting, automatic alarms at given thresholds of attack, and a graphical user interface for controlling the firewall. although there is this too » pubweb.nfr.net/~mjr/pubs/a1fwall/index.htm-- It takes one tree to make 10,000 matches, but one match to burn 10,000 trees.

I also think that »www.robertgraham.com/pubs/firewall-seen.html should be added to your list. Some how, I think that it is a quintessential site re: firewall information. Or, at least, it has been for me. What do you think? |

| reply to OzarkMan$ Darn!! And all this time I was thinking that Black Ice was a combination of a firewall and an IDS. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |

Are the Norton products that cost money just a rip off? Or is there a difference? Just checkin in. Thanks, -- Pat |

Bobb5Premium join:2001-02-16 Kent, WA | Go to there sight or use there software, Its in plain print Firewall and intrusion, If some people can not do this or can not read properly that's not my fault, I'm sure Network Ice in making Black ice knows what they designed and are selling, better then allot people on here that have been here so long they think they know it all, Just because you can sit in your bedroom and find some neat little descriptions of Firewalls does not change what it says on there Webpage, no matter how smart you think you are, It does not make you look very good posting something like this when there own website says just the opposite. For you to be so arrogant to contradict this, is, well I leave it at that, I just originally brought up black ice because I thought it would make a good addition to Zonealarm or others since there are so many ways to get around a stand alone firewall, but once again the people that know everything had to shoot that idea down because they know all about everything, Zonealarm is a great firewall, But I'm going to try every gd firewall on the whole web and decide for myself and not fall in line like a sheep and pick it just because its there and its stylish to use. Soon there product will stop outgoing also then it will be better then most any Firwall Regardless, because it will have two, yes intrusion and firewall, and will be far safer then a generic stand alone firewall, so until then you can amuse your self looking through the dictionary for descriptions of Firewalls |

RayJ9 join:2000-08-01 San Antonio, TX | reply to Bobb5 It does not matter what the marketing department calls it. The fact, is BID doesn't (can't) block unknown Trojans, viruses, or spyware.
NetworkIce has even stated that they can't block a Trojan that is not in their Trojan list and tried to say that was not a problem. -- Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur. |

Lockdown 2000 is a JOKE - closest thing to a hoax on the list. AtGuard is no longer legally available to new users - it was picked up by Symantec, some serious bloat added to it and renamed by them. McAfee is also not free (at least I don't think so unless they are offering it under the same deal as ZA) - it is also a late comer and fails some critical tests.
Why mention things you have to pay money for when seriously Top-Ranked, top quality stuff is free for personal use? |
