SBC DSL: DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS XP UPDATE 818043

Please Sticky
DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS XP UPDATE 818043. You will not be able to browse the internet once you install it. I just got off the phone with a tier 2 tech support person and she could not figure out why I was not able to browse. When you go to windows update and look in the second section for windows xp it will show it as a recommended update. I just want to pass this on to everyone who may have this problem. System restore fixed my computer.
Erik

This update to internet Protocol Security Clients IPSec and L2TP/IPSec allows IPSec to work across Network Address Translation (NAT) boundaries. A client may connect to a Windows Server 2003 Server with IPSec or L2TP/IPSec when the client is behind one or more NATs. Users should download this update if they use IPSec and/or L2TP Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

You should be able to remove it from Windows components. I can confirm that this can cause system slowdowns, and is only needed if you're using VPN/IPSEC.

Also do not install XP update 811493. It will cause serious performance degradation. My 2.53ghz system was pausing until I uninstalled that update.

Boy, I really wish Linux had better gaming support...

Its not that Linux doesn't have better gaming support, its that games don't port their games to Linux much...yet.

Try using system restore when you boot into safe mode

Thank you. Removing that puppy seems to have worked wonders.

Re: SBC DSL: DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS XP UPDATE 8180

Did it uninstall cleanly for you? I did the system restore and rolled it back to the day I installed it. I then went into Add/Remove and used the option to uninstall that patch. The computer rebooted never to boot again. I can't even get into safe mode.

I just uninstalled it from Control Panel/Add Remove Programs without doing a "system restore" first. It warned me I had IE, OE and AvandGo installed and they may be affected. The restore went quickly, it rebooted, the system performance is back where it should be and I don't notice any IE, OE and AdvantGo anomalies.

I have 811493 installed. I looked in add-remove programs and it did not allow me to remove it. I haven't noticed anything unusual, but I did install it right after installing XP. Should I try to remove this update another way or just leave it alone.
Thanks for your help.

You looked all the way at the bottom of the Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q811493, right?

That's where I found mine.

It's there but when I click on it, it doesn't give me the option to remove like the other programs. I have Ashampoo uninstaller installed, I wonder if i should try and use it to uninstall.

Thanks

OK you can Uninstall it doing this
click START, RUN

type in:

%Windir%\$NTUninstallQ811493$\Spuninst

Open Spuninst.exe

try it, it worked for me.

I probably installed 818043 since it isn't listed in Windows Update as a waiting update, but it had no perceptible effects on my system.

I installed 811493, but it did not slow down my system since I do not use the autoprotect feature of my anti-virus program.

Thanks KlanXX,
That worked
