| New Modem being trialed.
Verizon is asking for its management DSL users in the former BA area to trial a new modem. I don't have any specs yet but I hoped to be chosen. They will be testing it starting in June. -- support the Hunley |

The only thing its said so far is that PPPoe is built into the modem and you can stay logged on indefinitely, oh yeah, and you get to keep the modem after the test is over. -- Onward through the fog. |

| Interesting thread.
As an aside I could've used a Westell Dual Connect. There's a machine sitting in my computer room which belongs to a friend from work. A Gateway which needs it's CPU swapped/Winders reinstalled, that sort of thing.
I recall Dan mentioning that it is most redundant to market Linksys routers while sending out a dual connect USB modem which, for a few more dollars and a 20 dollar hub could have NAT router functions already engineered and manufactured in the line of current Westell modems.
I wonder if the new mystery modem is just VZ's way of going with a single vendor, Westell, for all their home networking products. I must admit though that Linksys is a more recognized brand replete with documentation on the Web.
Thanks for the news Pathfinder , Keep us updated.
Cheers -- Best Regards, Sed [ Verizon aDSL:1500/128 @ $29.99! / 1792/160 Sync! / 1515/136 Solid Speed! Ride The Copper! ]

| For some odd reason when I signed up nearly 6 years ago for DSL service through Bell Atlantic they kept shipping me as often as twice a week a Westell modem.
I kept sending them back, and often they would end up being returned to me.
Somewhere way back when Westell announced for $49.95 online the Webshare software. I bought it, and got free upgrades when the product went to the Pro version. Westell was very nice and allowed me to install it on 3 modems as backups. I still have them.
The point I was trying to eventually get to was that the Westell with Web Share and a $12 Linksys switch let me run without problems for several years. I moved to a router and put one of the Westell's in bridge mode, but I can assure you that my multi-user shared connection is no better or worse from having done so. If the Web Share software was slightly more flexible about port forwarding issues, I doubt I would be using a router today. |

Yes, Westell does offer the 2400, which is a DSL modem, router/firewall, and 4-port switch + USB in one box.
The Westell 2410 is similar, except it also includes a wireless access point.
Regardless of all the bells and whistles, what's most important in a DSL modem is reliable performance on all subscriber loops, including long-hauls and noisy lines. Westell does this well, especially in the 2000 series, so I imagine that the same technology is being used in the 2400 series.

Perhaps this is the modem you'll be testing?

Aha! Just as I predicted... A no-brainer really, since VOL has a large contract with Westell to supply modems.
Of course, a major issue with the trial of the new Westell modem is that it will work just as well on a short, clean subscriber loop as a 2100 or a 36R516. The question is how does it perform on a long-haul (say, 20000-25000 feet) and/or poor-quality lines? Westell states that the 2200 has superior performance than their older modems in these less-than-ideal environments. How is that claim going to be field-tested, especially since VOL won't provision a line for DSL if the effective loop length is greater than 18kfeet?

I follow your posts with interest and read them all. Here's a whitepaper from Westell that has a lot of good info about these new modems. |

Outstanding... I was looking for exactly this type of technical documentation on the Westell 2200. Thanks for making it available here!

| reply to Pathfinder I hit the lottery!
I just received my 2200 Westell modem for the Verizon test today. We now have a new model number to add to the confusing list; A99-220015-00. I am starting to see a pattern here.
First impressions; out of the box the modem does not have the heft or solid feel of my old B90-36R515-01. Not that the B90 is built like an old Hays 300 baud.
The modem has a build in fire-wall, a real fire-wall, as well as a NAT DHCP router. It has a built in PPPoE for an always on connection even if the computer is off. All of this is accessible by a Web interface.
One can not access the modem set-up unless one goes though the sign up process for DSL again; then the Web interface comes up any time the default IP is entered in a browser. The Web interface takes the place of Diagnostic Icon program.
I live less then a mile from the CO so my speed tests are exactly the same as before, no more no less. I have all most a month to do eight or nine test and report to Westell.
Westell is supplying tech support; I have a special number to call. If I need help out of business hours I have an eight hundred number to page a tech and they will call me back. Now that is support. |

Is this modem configurable like setting it as a bridge only? |

I have a question about this new modem. After reading the white paper and the specs on this modem, am I to understand that if for instance I am 14,000 ft. out from the CO, will this enable me to get higher download/upload speeds, if I am provisioned for them? So this will take some of the distance restrictions off of DSL, and also allow people that are maybe over the 18,000 ft. limit to get DSL? This would be great if this is how it works, but I imagine that if the beta works good that it will be maybe months or maybe even years until Verizon puts the modem into service.....does anybody have a time frame on the implementation of this thing? |
